a great adventure after the apocalypse happens

Toby is a one of a kind. He is 12 and was created in a lab. He calls the six who created him, his grambles. Kind of like grandparents. Toby has mostly human DNA with a bit of cat DNA as well that has given him a few feline features like how he is rather short for his age, has a tail, ears, and a keen sense of smell. But he looks much like a human boy would otherwise. He lives underground with his grambles and has never seen what is on the surface. It was foretold that the end was coming for mankind and the grambles were scientists sent down below to prepare massive areas for people to escape to, however, they never came. So no one knows what is up there. Toby has a keen interest in going to see, and he keeps hearing a voice that it is obvious no one else is hearing. He seeks to find the owner of the voice and to find the answer to his greatest question: does he have a soul? Because of how he was created, he has doubts about it. So he sets off on an adventure to find out. This adventure will be dangerous. Not all of those who are left are nice.
This book is geared to a younger audience, but I still found myself intrigued with the plot. It is an interesting story and very clean. This would be a great kids book and a safe one. No romantic gestures in this one to worry about and it is inspirational. Toby is seeking the Soul Creator to find the answer to his question. He comes upon the good, the bad, and the ugly of what is left of humanity. Not only are people sometimes openly hostile, but some have pretty much lost their minds. It is a dismal state of affairs really, but Toby's journey is one of hope. And hope can change everything. I am interested to see where Toby's journey takes him next!

refreshing, adventure-filled fantasy

Do you have any idea what a trilby might be? Twelve year old Toby was created by six older scientists who had taken refuge in an underground shelter during something called the “Great Calamity” which caused extensive devastation on the surface of the earth. These caretakers, or “grambles” as Toby calls them, were lonely and wanted a grandchild, so they strung together human DNA, added some cat DNA to fill in the gaps, formed him in a test tube, and brought him to life in an incubator. He has some characteristics of a cat—ears, tail, and claws, but is mostly like a boy and can talk. They called him a trilby.
Toby has lived his entire life in the caverns and received an excellent education from the grambles. But as a result of his studies, he has a question which they can’t answer. Does he have a soul? Then one day he hears a mysterious Voice calling him to go into the outer world. There he meets a group of swamp people who worship a goddess Natura, and he rescues a girl about his same age named Mia whom they are going to offer as a human sacrifice. Toby’s hope is for Mia and him ultimately to return to the grambles and build a house near the cave. However, after they travel on a bit, Mia gets hit with an arrow shot by a man who is protecting his village. What happened to cause such a disaster on earth? Will Toby and Mia survive? And most importantly, will he ever find out if he has a soul?
The Amazing Adventures of Toby the Trilby is identified as “Christian Sci-Fi/Fantasy/Dystopian,” but don’t let the word “dystopian” turn anyone off. Much of the current dystopian literature for children is dark, gloomy, and often godless, but while Toby and Mia face many trials and hardships, this book is solidly based upon a Biblical worldview and offers glimmers of hope. It is such a refreshing change of pace for those of us who believe the Scriptures to read an adventure-filled science fiction/fantasy type of work in which someone seeks the “Soul Creator,” and in which there are no elements unsuitable for children. Also, Toby is a good role model for courage, perseverance, and kindness toward others. Author Angela Castillo has already written a sequel, The Further Adventures of Toby the Trilby in which a bright light falls from the sky and Toby finds himself on a quest to find the source of the light.

A Unique Tale

The Amazing Adventures of Toby the Trilby by Angela Castillo is a unique tale of a test-tube baby with "mostly" human DNA who must deal with a post apocalyptic world along with his creators.
Toby, now twelve years old, lives underground with his "grambles" - a term her uses for his six creators, similar to grandparents. Although Toby is mostly human, he has cat DNA as well, which gives him feline features of pointed ears and a tail. Toby's creators are scientists who were told that there would be an end to life as they knew it and were instructed to prepare areas for the citizenry to escape to when the end happened. Problem is, no one came.
The scientists and Toby wonder what the world is like now that there is no longer a civilization. During this time, Toby hears a voice - a voice that no one else can hear. This prompts him to go out into the unknown to see what is out there and to find the Soul Creator. This act of curiosity takes him on a dangerous trek where he meets what is left of the inhabitants of the world - some are mean, some are crazy, but each teach Toby valuable lessons on his hopeful journey to meet his divine maker.
This was a very interesting read and one I could see parents reading to/with their children. Looking forward to reading where the series will take Toby after this perilous adventure.
