About the Author
Peter Arnold has been in publishing all his working life, most of the time writing or editing books on sports and games. Among his half-century or so titles are several on cricket, some in collaboration with Peter Wynne-Thomas, including An Encyclopedia of Cricket and Cricket in Conflict. Peter Wynne-Thomas is a Committee Member and archivist of Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club. He is also the Honorary Secretary of the Association of Cricket Statisticians and Historians, and runs a specialist book shop Sport-in-Print, opposite the Trent Bridge Ground. He compiled The Complete History of Cricket Tours, co-authored Who's Who of Cricketers, is a regular contributor to cricket magazines and to Wisden Cricketers Almanac.

Il protagonista, Jep Gambardella, è un giornalista acclamato e richiesto, affascinante sciupafemmine. Autore quarant’anni prima del romanzo L’apparato umano, Jep era stato osannato dalla critica e definito la nuova promessa della letteratura contemporanea.
Ma gli anni passano e Gambardella non ha pubblicato altro non riuscendo a superare il blocco della pagina bianca. A must read for who enjoyed the movie.

This is the script of one of the most beautiful italian movies ever, but it is a book on its own. In fact the script reported in this book has many scenes not seen in the movie, and other subtle differences that allow the readers to better understand Paolo Sorrentino's original ideas. I suggest, as I did, to read the book listening to the music pieces that are indicated associated at many scenes, in order to recreate the director's suggestions.

No more yelling

No more choke chains, no more yelling.

The last time we had puppies was almost 30 years ago. The puppies were taught with choke chains, correction jerks, and loud, assertive commands. I hated it and was never very good at the training methods we were taught, but these methods were considered the only way to show a dog who is boss and get obedient behavior back then. The puppies eventually learned and behaved fairly well. They lived into their teens, and then we got our first adult shelter dog, an already well-trained dog with beautiful manners whom we loved dearly until she died too early from malignant melanoma.

When we brought Jazmine home from the shelter, it was another experience altogether. She had been a stray and in the shelter system for a while. She came to one of our local shelters on a lab rescue program--she is part lab and part ???

She was around two years old, and very active, but a challenge. Fearful at first, she eventually relaxed into a bit of a wild child--very sweet but a handful. Fortunately, the shelter gives a one hour home visit from their trainer who uses positive training methods.

She taught us the very basics, and we attended her classes. Jazmine has too poor an attention span to do well around other dogs, but we wanted to continue the training at home, so she recommended this book. I was so happy not to have to deal with choke chains, yelling and jerking the dog. I was amazed to see Jazmine learn things immediately, with soft, calm commands and a gentle, positive approach.

The book is great. It explains the theory behind the approach so well, that I was later able to apply the principles to some of the behavioral challenges Jazmine presented. She loved to steal things, especially socks and run into the other room to chew on them. We would chase her and grab the object, and you could see the little wheels turning in her head while she decided what object would be next. Using what I learned from the book, I analyzed what reward she was getting from this behavior. I finally realized how much she loved the chase and attention. So the next time she stole an item, I totally ignored her. She came back with the object to taunt me--"lookie what I have!" she seemed to say. I ignored her. She dropped the item and went to lie down in a corner of the family room with a puzzled look on her face. We have learned to chase her only when she has her own toys, she loves that. Now, when she wants a chase, she chooses her own toys and leaves our stuff alone. I didn't have to yell, punish, or swat--all things we would have been told to do by trainers in the "old days".

I enjoyed the chapters and worked through them with Jazmine. She seemed to really enjoy the training sessions as well. We used clicker training at first, but were gradually able to move away from that. Now a simple "yes" will do most of the time and we don't have to carry a pouch of treaties either. Unfortunately, there are still certain behaviors she will only do with a treat--more my fault than the method's I think. We lent the book to a neighbor who brought home a new puppy, and I'd like to get it back so I could learn more.

I buy this book for friends and relatives with new puppies and they give it good feedback as well.

A well written, powerful and effective approach for ALL dogs and trainers.

Rusty is a rescue from Mississippi shipped to a local shelter here in San Diego. He is now a very powerful and athletic 60 lb two year old. When we adopted Rusty at 7 months old he wasn't house trained, was fearful and aggressive to most people, and had no idea how to play with other dogs. He was terrified of doors, hoses, and vacuums. When frightened, he would dart in, bite, and then dart away which made him dangerous.

I immediately enrolled in a traditional "positive" training class, which used force training. The "positive" aspect was praise after the dog complied. If the dog didn't comply, he was forced using the leash and a pinch collar. Rusty freaked out at my attempts, and even more so at the trainers attempts to get him to lie down. The trainer's solution was to apply more force, putting Rusty into a mindless panic. Not wanting Rusty or the trainer to get hurt, I withdrew from the class and looked for a more effective approach.

I discovered Pat Miller in the bibliography and recommended reading sections of several dog training books by animal behaviorists, especially Patricia McConnell and Jean Donnalson (I highly recommend both). Pat Miller's approach is clear, scientific, sensible, and highly effective for ALL types, sizes, and ages of dogs.

One of her points, that I agree with, is that there are no vicious or "difficult breeds" of dogs. All dogs (and people) live to please themselves, to maximize reward and minimize punishment. Using reward almost exclusively to change behavior 1) is powerful because you can associate the reward consistently with the target behavior in the dog's mind, 2) results in quick learning depending on the trainer's skill in communicating to the dog, 3) builds the dog's loving relationship with the trainer, 4) results in a balanced, calm, and confident dog, and 5) is fun. In contrast, punishment 1) is not very effective because it's hard to associate the punishment with the target behavior (e.g. to a dog yelled at or hit for being on the sofa, "is he mad at me because I'm standing by the window, or because he's dangerous and unpredictable?"), 2) usually results in learning the wrong lesson (e.g. only go on the sofa when the owner isn't present) 3) creates a fearful and mistrustful relationship with the trainer, 4) results in a fearful, sneaky, neurotic dog (putting easily aroused dogs into the danger zone for attacking), and 5) isn't fun.

The book is well organized, well written, and is all you need for a comprehensive training program. Rusty has learned remarkably quickly using Pat Miller's approach. He walks well on and off leash, comes when called, likes people and other dogs, plays acceptably well (it's hard to completely correct for no socialization as a puppy), knows many tricks, is well behaved, and loves and trusts me and my wife. He loves to learn because it's fun and he always gets what he wants when he learns (a treat and a stoke). I love to teach him because it's fun, because I love him, and I get what I want, which is a happy and well behaved big athletic dog.

Other books will help you understand dogs and the relationship between dogs and people better, but for training this is the only book you need. You and your dog will be happy if you follow Pat Miller's approach.

One of THE go-to books for dog training!

I think this really is one of the best books out there for learning about positive training and how to implement it with your dog. I've never beaten around the bush with indicating that I'm very pro-positive training and I think Pat Miller is one of the best.

The book begins with a little bit about Pat Miller's history of training, namely that she was a "traditional" trainer at one point, which many were. Traditional trainers focus more on aversives and punishments: leash pops, choke chains, and the like. It tells briefly of her discovery and switch to positive methods. I think this is important: it says that anyone can do it, no matter how they trained beforehand.

From there, the book is divided into three main sections.

The first outlines the ins and outs of positive training: how it works, why it works, why it builds a better bond with your dog. It explains a little bit about how dogs think and learn and outlines some basic training tools you'll need with your dog.

The second gives instructions on how to get your dog to do some basic obedience: sit, down, stay, come, etc. She breaks each of them down into easy steps to achieve them and gives suggestions on common problems people might encounter when trying to teach their dog the particular command. At the end of each section, she gives "bonus games" which are basic tricks you can teach your dog. She stresses, time and time again, that this should be fun: both for the human and the dog.

The third addresses common behavioral problems, such as housetraining, separation anxiety, aggression, socialization, and what to do when there's a baby on the way. Each of these sections can (and are) books on their own, so in the context of a fairly short book they're somewhat glossed over. Miller is, at every turn, careful to note that if your dog has some more serious issues that finding a good positive trainer who can work with you and your dog in person is most important.

I recommend this book to anyone who wants to get started in obedience training with their dog. They'll end up with a really well-behaved dog who loves to work for them.

Excellent book! As a doctor I find more interesting ...

Excellent book! As a doctor I find more interesting that it has clinical information on relevant subjects e.g. renal or liver problems. On the beggining it also gives as an idea about analytical chemistry. I strongle recommend this book for all doctors, medical students, lab staff/ technicians, technologists/ scientists and biologists, biochemists and chemists. It is cheap and has extensive information about clinical biochemistry issues. It also has introduction information, e.g. on renal function tests it refers to kidney anatomy and physiology in order to understand better the pathology of this organ that is reflected on the biochemistry results.

About the Author

JOHN MCMURRY, educated at Harvard and Columbia, has taught approximately 17,000 students in general and organic chemistry over a 30-year period. A Professor of Chemistry at Cornell University since 1980, Dr. McMurry previously spent 13 years on the faculty at the University of California at Santa Cruz. He as received numerous awards, including the Alfred P. Sloan Fellowship (1969-71), the National Institute of Health Career Development Award (1975-80), the Alexander von Humboldt Senior Scientist Award (1986-87), and the Max Planck Research Award (1991).

ROBERT C. FAY, Professor of Chemistry at Cornell University, has been teaching general and inorganic chemistry at Cornell since 1962. Known for his clear, well-organized lectures, Dr. Fay was the 1980 recipient of the Clark Distinguished Teaching Award. He has also taught as a visiting professor at Harvard University and at the University of Bologna (Italy). A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Oberlin College, Fay received his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois. He has been an NSF Science Faculty Fellow at the University of East Anglia and the University of Sussex (England) and a NATO/Heineman Senior Fellow at Oxford University.

Excellent Presentation

I'm amazed at the diversity of reviews for this textbook. Usually, I can spot an exceptinal science textbook and usually the reviews are petty much in agreement but this one is an exception. Oh well - we all have our own opinions, and that's a good thing.

I'm currently into studying Biochemistry and Physics. I bought this book after seeing a pdf version that was part of a "Great Science Textbooks..." collection. As I started browsing the file I found myself being captivated by just about any section I skipped into. That is, I was learning and re-learning some of the fundamentals which I thought I already knew (and probably should've, but didn't), and it was like an "AHAH!" experience when the light would go on. This was great fun! I enjoyed that so much I immediately ordered the book. I began referring back to it to help me with my Biochem studies (via Lehninger and a couple other texts). The last chapter of this textbook is on Biochemistry and actually does a better job at introducing many of the key aspects of that subject than my Biochemistry textbooks. I still find myself frequently consulting this textbook and its resources for a large variety of issues that would otherwise remain subtle points of confusion or mystery. So, I have to give it 5 stars and a hearty recommenation.

Apocalypse now!

I found these first two volumes at our local discount store and immediately after fimishing them in less than a day went to Amazon to find the rest. It's a beautiful apocalyptic world with art that I just love. Every line is simplistic and carefully placed. There is a bit of mystery in it as you learn about the world through the heroine's travels. It reminds me of other manwhas like Rure and Queen's Knight. The only problem I have (if you're to this volume it's not a spoiler) is the sudden competency of an incompetent character. But it's forgivable, because this manwha is sweet, interesting, and develops their world while making you think of your own. Great read! I recommend it!

Terrible Book

We live in a time when people are more concerned about equity than education. That is what this book is about. It is a book published by a liberal to advance his/their agenda of supposedly encouraging multiculturalism. In reality, it is actually a book about evening out everyone's education so they are all at the same level so the system is fair. Encouraging students to excel is forbidden because then there wouldn't be equity. Books like this are the reason public education is failing in the USA.

Thanks for this product, it's got me back into my yoga practice.

When my children were born I stopped going to yoga classes and tried to continue at home with the time I had. A friend of mine gave me these cards as a gift, saying it would help me get back into my yoga practice, which is exactly what it did. With these cards I can practice different sequences depending on the moment, and in a way that is comfortable wherever I go - as the packet is pocket size. The quality is important for me so I can see the asanas and their directions clearly so as not to force the posture - and these are shown perfectly. The simplicity that you explain each posture make these cards a wonderful aid that I don't hesitate to recommend. Thanks!

Just received my flash cards. Love them they are in color & have a description on the back but they also have arrows showing you what way body parts should be turned. And come in nice plastic case to keep them in. Deliver was fast and showed up before estimated time. Thank you so much they are great for a beginner like me.
