barring mechanicals

Wake 7:30, wife left for the early flight at 6, and the bed is full of Oskar and Sara. I read on, reach P38 before having to stop to lookup "circadian rythm". Take opportunity to grab pee before reading on.
My girls run up the stairs "the hamster has escaped", so follow themdown. Hamster is holed up behind the tutle tank. She pops out too soon, amateur, and Oskar bags her. If I were a hamster I'd have stayedout of site until the kids started to watch cartoons.
Back on the road with Andy, and he is leaving a ski hire shop. 10 mins later, after living through Andy's knee strain injury he releaves the tension with an oxe bow lake gag. First that I have read. Sara arrives upstairs again to try and persuade me to come and see a hamster vidio on youtube. I tell her no, I am reading my book. That is the thing with reading about the LEL - it forces you to comit and make tough decisions. I explain that the book was written by someone I knew, and that he met her when she was a baby. ara is suitably reassured that she was at least breafly centre of Andy's world, as well as my own, she returns to youtube to mine it for further hamster videos.
I read on, over the Scotish boarder, passing a great gag about southerners and flat pack trees, onto the bhuddist temple on the Scottish boarders. I remember stopping there on a drive to Edinbrough Festival with Ian years back. An SMS arrives from Helle, she is on the plane ready to take off. I turn the page, Andy passes the temple and the text is littered withhindu references, which to my ignorant mind look luke items from a Thia menu.
As I read on I realise that there is a constant nagging, "will the zip ties hold, will the zip ties hold" like Thomas the Tank engine but not so positive. He gets to Edinborough and head home. The tale of Eskdalemuir's socks brings a tear and a chuckle. It should bewritten up as a folk song.
Andy is welcomed to England by a little brown sign hidden in a hedge. Come to think of it I always see the Croeso year Cymru sign after the Seven bridge, but never noticed any welcome to England on the wayback. Perhaps there is no welcome? Page 82 is reached, it is 9 o'clock and time for breakfast, and a trip to the swimming pool with my kids.
Back from the pool, kids are watching a film before lunch, and then
we're going to the beach.
As Andy is heads back south his prose picks up with the pace, the bike is stuck in top gear. I'm familiar with the map of the UK and can see that its all down hill. Lucky for him.
A great passage about scents emerging from the skin draws a chuckle, but in the spirit of LEL I drive on through Morse code similies in time to watch someone fall asleep on their bike.
I did the same once after taking ant-histamines one summer when I was a motorbike courier. Fortunately I stopped the bike and got the stand down before nodding off. Woke sometime later with the controller shouting my name from the walky talky on my shoulder.
Andy is still stuck in top as he entices us on, page after grueling page, past vaguely familier names, through percussive rain via witty
metafores. The guy clearly retains a lot of what he reads as enticing
phrases hint at unexplored topics - geography, music, road construction. For one whose familiarity with non-fiction is limited to
reading music lyrics the pages indicate a wealth of other stuff that
I'll read when I'm old. Older.
Andy pages make the LEL seem achieavable, and it is, i could kill this book under natural light.
And we're done! The sense of elation of a book on LEL completed.
Another notch in my belt.

Insane distances, mechanical mishaps......

I really enjoyed this.....it introduces the Audax concept and recumbent riding......
I ride a recumbent and live the comfort and speed factor, and have tried some 200km Audax events in Australia, the thought of London to Edinbrough and back in British weather scares me.....
Amazing, adaptation to overcome the mishaps enroute !

This book gives you a glimpse into the world of the randoneer. The author isn't a professional training countless hours, but rather an "everyday guy" who has to balance work, life and the need to train. He makes the best of whatever challenges befall him and manages to help others along the way.
