It says a lot about how vampires have played out in pop culture that harkening back to Buffy the Vampire Slayer could be considered a throwback to a classic. But that’s just what Fischer does in this almost spoof, with added touches of Mean Girls nastiness and True Blood lustiness thrown in for good measure. It’s eternal teen vampire Lily’s job to transfer to a new school, sniff out the Vamplayer (“part vampire, part player”) threatening some unsuspecting hot girl, and make sure he can’t infest the school with evil. Her latest gig at a remote boarding school offers up more than the bubbleheaded slayer bargained for, though. Fischer paints his characters with pretty broad strokes (everyone is either gorgeous, a nerd, or a gorgeous nerd), and the internal logic is a bit muddled, but this isn’t a book to be pondered too deeply. In terms of campy, bloody fun, it delivers, and with a tagline so bad it’s great (“Don’t hate the game. Hate the Vamplayer”) this might even find some cache as an ironic favorite. Amazingly good and clever!

Lily dies just to realize she has been turned and now is working for the Sisterhood of Dangerous Girlfriends. After several years of training she is now a Third Sister alongside with Cara (Second Sister) and Alice (First Sister).
And what they do is get into a potential place where a vamplayer is planning to create an army of vampires using first one victim: the typical hot-slutty girl that will fall for his charm and then, once turned, lure everyone else into becoming vamps too.
Once they are inside such place (almost always high schools or places like that) they find the potential victim, save her form the vamplayer and kill him.
Easy peasy, right? Wrong. Lily is tired of being Third Sister, of going to high school after high school just to save ungrateful girls and, at some rate, she is also tired of Alice for being so slutty and superior. But on top of everything she wants to be a Savior.
Who are Saviors? They are something like the Elite, la crème de la crème of vampires. They are the badass who save the world when a vamplayer has gone already too far.
But for now she is stucked at being a Sister and their new assignment is to enrole into Nightshade Conservatory for Exceptional Girls and Boys. Yes, posh name means posh place.
Now what they need to do is go, blend in, spot the victim and potential vamplayer and save the world.
Sadly for Lily everything goes wrong when Alice starts to hung out with the cool guys and becomes -more- distant, cold and superior. And then Cara, sweet Cara, turns her back on her too. But at least she meets Zander, a geeky guy, and Groover, a guy a little bit too big but with a heart even bigger. They two make sure she is not alone and she even suspects Zander's feelings for her are specials.
Now she only needs to unmask Tristan as the vamplayer and save the horrible Bianca, who is the one making her life a living nightmare... But something seems a little off about her plan.
Personal opinion:
Once again I have to bow down to Rusty's ideas and his unique style of writing. I had a wonderful time reading this book and, like "Zombies don't Cry", I sure hope he will write a sequel for Vamplayers.
I mean, how cool is the idea of a vampire being also a player? I know nowadays that's what they do, seduce, but the word itself encircles a whole new concept.
Maybe the only thing that felt a little too forced was the bond between Lily, Cara and Alice... specially with Alice. I mean, if you work with someone that it's supposed to be like a real sister then, I'm sorry, but Alice isn't sister material at all. True to be honest I don't have brothers or sisters so I'm not sure how they interact with each other but I would have gladly punch Alice in the face a few times.
Now that I think of it, I assume that's the whole point, hahaha.
I finished the book yesterday night and all I could think of was: "Not only he managed to scare me a little and made me check the windows (just in case something was lurking outside, you know) but he also made me laugh with the witty dialogues and snarky answers while crying with some of the outcomes". I love a book that makes me feel so many things because it means the author managed to create a bond between the characters and myself.
And, just in case you wonder, Rusty manages to write from a female point of view in a superb way. More than once I found myself forgetting that the author is a guy!
Now the only thing I have to say is: Dear Rusty, tell me there's going to be a series, please! I want to read more about Lily, Zander and Tristan!

Fun with the perfect amount of action!

Last year I read Zombies Don't Cry by Rusty Fischer and I really enjoyed it! His writing is kind of different because he creates kind of a spoof, it's half ridiculous {in a funny way} and half serious. Like I giggle at some of the things he comes up with, but yet I grow attached to the characters and I take the story serious, just not too serious. I'm not really a big fan of spoofs, whether it's a movie or a book, it's normally not my thing. But Rusty makes it work for me. I actually invest myself in the story.
I found myself sucked into this book quickly and cruised through it in a short period of time. I never grew bored and it was pretty much steady action going on keeping me turning those pages. I really enjoyed Lily and her view point on things as well as her ability to kind of let things roll off her shoulders. She's been going into schools to look for these vamplayers for a very long time and when you've been a student for that long you really learn a lot.
Now these vamplayers kind of sound silly right? Well, it's not really that silly. They are young and good looking vampires that stake out girls at high schools and turn them into vampires. Eventually turning the entire school, or much of it. There is a bit more to the whole vampire background revealed in the book and I thought it all made sense and worked well. I think I might have liked a bit more history sooner, but it wasn't a big deal.
I liked that Lily liked the 'underdog', the nerdy, geeky dude. But I didn't really 'feel' the romance at first. As the story went on it wasn't really an issue though and it all worked out fine. I remember thinking in the beginning that I'd like a bit more character development but by the end I no longer felt that way. So I guess they were gradually fleshed out more as I read on.
Now I really enjoyed this book but it wasn't perfect. One issue was that Lily was kind of blind to things. She'd get all these hints about things but she just pretty much ignored them because she was so sure she knew exactly who was guilty and didn't let herself really think otherwise.
Overall this book is a lot of fun with action, romance and friendship. There's some gore and violence so be aware of that. I definitely recommend you pick this one up!

A surefire hit!

This one is a definite read! Rusty writes in such a smooth and easy flow, letting you fall right in and attach to the characters. I fell in love with the kind and good natured yet, kick some serious ahem, character of Lily and the page gripping events she'll lead you through.
Ever since that gruesome day that Lily's mother was attacked and killed, Lily now lives to find Vamplayers. Vamplayers are vamps that play the game so good that they can fool any human they wish and look fabulous while doing it. Far off the royal breeding line, they have no respect for the natural order of things, they go after any and all humans they wish, and scope out high schools, taking them over. Lily's job (being a Sister, and the third and bottom Sister at that) is to find out just who they are in the high school and call in the Saviors to kill them. Lily wants nothing more than to be First Sister, and even more, she wants to be a Savior, but she never can pass that test.
When Lily, Alice, and Cara arrive at the new school, Lily thinks she has it all figured out. She knows the Vamplayer this time, yet she doesn't understand why Alice and Cara are acting funny towards her as if she is the outcast. They are Sisters after all. Why the strange attitude, strange looks, and disappearances? What are they up to and why aren't they focused on the Vamplayer? Something just isn't right. Nothing like this has ever happened before.
