Michael Grosso has taught humanities and philosophy at Marymount Manhattan College, City University of New York, and New Jersey City University. A mind-opening book

Michael Grosso was particularly qualified to write this book. He is: a PH.D.; a former professor of philosophy; the author of several scholarly books and many, many scholarly articles. He is also author of a book about his own extraordinary experiences, complete with speculations on what they mean. He is a lapsed Catholic, a polyglot able to read the original Italian records concerning Joseph of Copertino, and a believer in the scientific method. All this comes together nicely in this little book that examines Joseph's life and circumstances in a very interesting, perhaps unique, way.

The outline of Joseph's biography is covered in a relatively few pages (about 20). All the rest of the book concentrates on the right question: "Given the facts, what do they mean?" What do they say about reality? What do they say to us, today? Particularly, given the evidence of what is possible, where do we go from here? I can't think of a more important topic.

It seems to me that in our day both science and theology are somewhat crippled, because they don't take each other seriously enough. Science -- particularly the most materialistic form of scientism -- dismisses theological concerns, "knowing" there can be no such thing as miracles, non-physical reality, or teleology. Religious thought, similarly, dismisses the idea that its experiences might be studied by those not sharing the beliefs but wiling to examine the data. This divorce impoverishes science, because it removes whole areas of human concern from careful investigation, -- and religion, because if "spiritual" concerns are unconnected to mundane reality, how relevant can they be?

So it is a relief to find thinkers such as Michael Grosso, willing and able to investigate all sides of a seemingly-well-known phenomenon. His arguments, and his tentative conclusions, are nothing short of mind-opening.

This is a Special and Wonderfull unique book. A Great read.

This book is very special and wonderful. Michael Grosso Ph.D. is not a typical historian, nor a typical scientist, nor a typical spiritual person, but rather manages to hold all these separate and usually opposing views simultaneously in a unique way that is thoroughly refreshing. This book is extremely well researched. Grosso searches for feasible, scientific explanations of how St. Joseph of Copertino might have levitated. Yet, in this book Grosso also explores what the spiritual states St. Joseph might have obtained that allowed him to not only levitate, but also to manifest countless other forms of miracles. The fact that the Inquisition itself tried St. Joseph twice and both times found him innocent of any crime other than breaking the normal ways in which our world functions said so much to me. I enjoyed this book for many reasons, but the main reason was that it is not a “New Age” spiritual book in the general sense, yet neither is it a scientific investigation out to disprove magic and miracles. In the last chapter Grosso explores the hypothesis that if St. Joseph’s case is historically supportable, then what other beliefs and ideas of what is possible in the material world do we have to reconsider. An overall great book, but it is the last chapter that truly convinced me that knowledge about a fifteenth century Saint is most relevant for expanding the modern mind.

Unbiased history of the airline and man you love to hate!

This is an excellent, well written, well edited brief history of Ryanair, and by default, Michael O'Leary. Creaton does not pull any punches when describing O'Leary's methods for dealing with conflict, but she does not take sides. Love him or hate him, O'Leary took a near-bankrupt airline and turned it into a legimate world-class carrier.

Tony Ryan is as much a part of the airline as O'Leary, although much more low key.

Michael O'Leary is a lot of things...and he would be the first to admit it. When accussed of being Tony Ryan's bagman, O'Leary replied, "I've always been Tony Ryan's bagman!"

Creaton clearly conducted extensive interviews and an enormous amount of research to write this book, and it shows. Give it a read!

Thorough Introduction to Manners and Social Skills

This timely books addresses a growing challenge in our society: the need to aquire good social skills and manners.

June Hines Moore addresses everything from table manners to conversation to job interviews to proper attire. It is particularly geared for young adults.

This would also be useful curriculm for teaching youth about social skills. Parents could use this with their children,etc.

Social skills in our society are at an all time low. Between broken families, computer/video absorption, and perhaps a host of other reasons, young adults are in dire need of clearcut guidance and direction. You will find it here.

Incidentally, many adults who are no longer "young" could still pick up a number of pointers from this material. Highly recommended.

excellent resource

I bought this book to use for lesson plans for implementing etiquette courses into 9th grade classes. The lessons are short and teen-friendly.

The only thing I didn't realize is that it is a Christian based book and has a part at the end of each section with the bible and etiquette. Because of that, some public schools will not allow it to be used without parental permission--or omission of those sections.

Overall I am very pleased with the resource.

I am only about halfway through this book and have already spotted several new tips. More importantly, in reading Crist's chapter on Exotics and Value I stumbled on some big leaks in my multi-race betting.

They talk about changes and variations

This book does not give me any surprise. The authors talk about changes and variations on the track such as Eurpoean import, new track materials, trainer's approaches etc. It is true that only these changes and variations can give us edge (if we investigate and analyse them) on horse betting now as the races are becoming more and more competitive and horse handicappers are also becoming more and more skillful. I therefore only give a three star rating to this book. It is OK but not impressive.

About the Author
For a time, Barb Rogers haunted thrift shops, rummage sales, and auctions in the hope of finding old clothes that could be converted into costumes and sold. Not a seamstress, unable to use a pattern, and without a sewing machine, she developed her own unique way of designing costumes.



Broadway Bazaar Costumes was born in one upstairs room, on the main street of Mattoon, Illinois, with 130 costumes, and Barb's burning desire to succeed. Within five years, it had grown to fifteen rooms of fun, fabulous, flamboyant costumes. A member of the National Costumers Association, Barb attended national conventions, competed with costumers from all over the U.S., and won many awards. But after ten years in business, she was brought down by a serious illness.



Always the survivor and eternal optimist, but unable to continue running the shop, she leased it out and found her second love: writing. Barb, her husband Junior, and their two dogs, Sammi and Georgie, relocated to a small mountain community in Arizona, where she could heal and write. Since that time, in addition to working on her costuming books, Barb has written many novels and hopes to become a published novelist but will always hold on to costuming as her first love.

Chapters cover all aspects of making costumes and scenes, and will prove a perfect reference for beginning productions at any age level.

About the Author
ANDREW MAUNDER is Principal Lecturer in Literature at the University of Hertfordshire. He has edited the Facts on File Companion to the British Short Story (7 volume set) and is author of Bram Stoker in the Writers and their Work series. He is also academic co-ordinator of the English Subject Centre.

RUTH ROBBINS is Principal Lecturer in English at Leeds Metropolitan University. Her publications include Subjectivity and Literary Feminisms, both in our Transitions series.

EMMA LIGGINS is Lecturer in Literature at Manchester Metropolitan University. She is author of George Gissing, the Working Woman and Urban Culture.

Gr 4–6—Before her mother and older brother Scott come home, George has a few, treasured moments to experience life as she's always wanted to live it. She looks in the mirror and calls herself Melissa, combs her hair over her forehead to mimic the appearance of bangs, and reads glossy magazines full of ads for lipstick, perfume, and tampons. Once her mom and brother come home, however, the magazines must go back to their secret hiding place. While George has no doubt she's a girl, her family relates to her as they always have: as a boy. George hopes that if she can secure the role of Charlotte in her class's upcoming production of Charlotte's Web, her mom will finally see her as a girl and be able to come to terms with the fact that George is transgender. With the help of her closest ally, Kelly, George attempts to get the rest of the world to accept her as she is. While children can have a sense of their gender identity as early as the age of three, children's literature is shockingly bereft of trans* protagonists, especially where middle grade literature is concerned. George offers more than the novelty of an LGBTQ coming-out story, however. Here, what is most remarkable is the use of pronouns: While the world interacts with George as if she is a boy, the narrator only refers to her with female pronouns, which gives her girl-ness a stronger sense of validation. In addition, George comments on the fact that, in past years, gays and lesbians have achieved a certain amount of visibility and acceptance, while the trans* community is still largely ignored and misunderstood. George's mother remarks that while she can handle having a gay child, she simply can't accept her as "that kind of gay." For George, as is the case for many LGBTQ youth, coming out is a process that she must repeat until she is properly recognized. There is pain in George, but not without the promise of a better tomorrow, even if tomorrow doesn't arrive as soon as it should. Absolutely amazing!

This book was so good. I feel like it should be mandatory reading for younger children, to help expose them to literature about transgendered people. These kinds of books will let kids know it’s okay to be who you are, as the first line in the summary says. I gave this 5 out of 5 stars.

I read this book for #ReadProud. I ended up reading it in one day, because I didn’t want to put it down and it’s a pretty short book. I’d heard some great things about this book, and they were definitely all correct. George is such a great main character. I felt for her while she tried to let the world know that she was a girl, not a boy. Her story touched my heart, and I’m sure it’ll touch your heart too!

First off, I really love Kelly, George’s best friend. Kelly was always there for George and didn’t judge her like a lot of other people did in the story. Kelly encouraged George to try out for Charlotte’s part in the play, and even helped George be Charlotte after the teacher said no. Kelly encouraged George to embrace being a girl in other ways as well, and I have to say bravo to Kelly’s character. If it wasn’t for her, it might have been harder, and taken George longer, to embrace her true identity.

George’s mom kind of annoyed me for most of the book. She kept dismissing George’s words, kept dismissing George when she tried to tell her mom that she wasn’t a boy. She comes around towards the end, but I feel like she’s going to take a while to come to terms with this. I wish more parents were accepting of their children, no matter what. George’s dad isn’t really in the picture, and we only hear mentioning of him a few times. George’s brother Scott was a pretty great character overall. He’s a little brash at first, but he comes around to the idea of George’s true identity much faster than the mom.

Of course, some kids can be cruel. Kids like Jeff, Rick, etc. are why more kids don’t come forward with their true identities. It breaks my heart that kids, and even adults, have to endure that kind of pain. Bullying is beyond wrong; I know from firsthand experience, but my reasons for being bullied were different. No child should have to endure bullying. But despite being picked on, George prevails. The ending was absolutely perfect. I just know George is going to be okay, even if she experiences some ups and downs.

Before I finish the review, I just want to point out one line that really stuck with me. It was said about George and I think it fits perfectly: “My point is, it takes a special person to cry over a book. It shows compassion as well as imagination.”

Final note: Another amazing debut! I read this book for the #ReadProud challenge this month, and I regret nothing. You can buy a Kindle or Nook copy of this book for $2.99 right now. Go get a copy ASAP!

From the mouth of a transgender teen

When I was told that this was a book written by a person like me (a person who falls outside the gender binary), about a young trans girl, I immediately purchased it and downloaded it onto my Kindle. Now that I've finished it, I can say that it was everything I'd hoped it would be. I plan to shove my Kindle right into my mother's hands, despite her aversion to it.

This book beautifully describes what it's like to be misgendered, even unintentionally. How the people in your life can mean the best, but even well-intentioned words hit hard, and in the most painful way imaginable. More importantly, it shows the difference between the uneducated, the reluctant, and the cruel. Not everyone accepts Melissa right away, but as time went on I found myself smiling wider and wider, until the end, where I had to put down my Kindle to just grin and squeal at nothing.

George is such an important book. The younger we start teaching kids about being transgender, the better. It saves transgender kids years of trying to figure out who they are, it can give them the opportunity to start their transition younger. It also helps undo some of the transphobia that kids these age might have already learned and internalized. Thanks to this book, trans youth will hopefully find themselves with more friends like Kelly and less bullies like Jeff.

Please support this book; show the publishers that we need even more books like these. Because we do.

Stellar book.

This book is life changing. That’s the best way to put it. It’s a book I couldn’t help but read in one sitting. It’s a book I couldn’t help but cry at. It’s a book I want to get into the hands of everyone. When I finished it I actually turned to the right of me, put the book out to my mom and went “read this.” I very rarely give my mom books to read because my mom’s not a reader, but because this isn’t on audio…yet. I gave her my ARC and she started to read it right away and couldn’t stop.

George transcends age ranges. It really does. George is about a girl, who the world views as a boy. George just wants to be herself, but it’s hard when everyone thinks you’re making a joke about your situation (which you aren’t.) Slowly George starts to tell people “hey, I’m a girl.” And it doesn’t go well. George is in fourth grade. Bully’s are strong. Crying in class is rough for anyone that age, but the end of Charlotte’s Web really got to George. Her mom sees her as her “little boy” and her brother, well he’s in high school. Who know’s what’s going on in his brain. George decides her moment to shine will be when the class puts on Charlotte’s Web.

Of course, her teacher, who she thought was on her side, thinks George is making a joke out of the situation, but her principal seems to get it. It’s hard for George. It’s hard for anyone that age. Why this story transcends age ranges is because George just wants to be accepted and loved for who they are. It’s also a story about friendship and love and one that needs to be read by all
