Donna Serdula's book, LinkedIn Makeover, provides all of the instructions and know-how to make a stunning LinkedIn profile. Her writing is clear, crisp and entertaining. It's an easy read, and provides simple-to-understand instructions. From Donna, I've learned that one's LinkedIn profile must be loaded with keywords so that people searching for you can find you. Views of my newly-optimized LinkedIn profile have tripled, and because of Donna's advice, I have been able to make connections with people who are now my mentors, esteemed colleagues and even potential clients.

I've read this book several times, and yet as I sit down to finally write a review, it's a challenge. You see, I want to do it justice. The concept this book presents is a megathought. It will have a transformational effect on many of its readers.

Okay, where to begin?? Let's go back a long, long time.

Ever since the big bang there have been groups of smaller units that have come together to form the next level up. This is the great pattern. Quantum strings or whatever combined in the right way to form quarks, the next level up. Quarks combined in the right way to form subatomic particles, the next level up. Subatomic particles (electrons, protons, neutrons) combined in the right way to form atoms, the next level up. Atoms combined in the right way to form molecules, the next level up. Molecules combined in the right way to form self-replicating amino acids, the next level up. Self-replicating amino acids combined in the right way to form single-celled life, the next level up. Single-celled lives combined in the right way to form multicell-life, the next level up. That's what we are right now. So... what's the next level up from here??

At each level up, the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. The Molecular human relationship is like that. It is the next level up, the beginning of a new kind of being, much as the first self-replicating amino acids were the beginning of a new kind of being, wherein the whole was vastly greater than the sum of the parts.

NOT WHAT I EXPECTED

I have more than 25 Joel Whitburn books in my collection and I've enjoyed every single one of them, until this one. This is not what I expected. This edition lacks some of the information (featured on the Pop Annual 1955-1999) that I cherished the most: weekly positions of each top five single, ranking of top artists by year, ranking of top songwriters by year, the ranking of the top 500 artists of all time. And the format of this new edition is a little bit confusing. A lot of attention is paid to the "bubbling under the Hot 100" section, but this is information that I find neither useful nor interesting. It seems as if this edition was rush-released. To those chart freaks (like myself) I recommend to keep your 1955-1999 edition in a safe place and wait for the next edition. Hopefully the guys at Record Research will go back to the old format of this book. Don't spend your money on this one.

Love the larger size

The larger format makes it easier to read all of the singles information. And I appreciate having all of the Bubbling Under the Hot 100 records listed for each year. I hope this new size (8-1/2 x 11) becomes the standard for all future releases from Record Research.

A Surprising Disappointment

This is the first time I've ever received a new edition of one of Joel Whitburn's Record Research books and found it less satisfying than the previous version.
The positives: the larger format, which I hope will become the Record Research Standard; six additional years of chart data
The neutral: adding all the Bubbling Under hits. These are kind of interesting, but they are also in Top Pop singles and seeing them in annual numerical order doesn't add much.
The negatives: all the missing information! The seventh edition had wonderful snapshot information for each year by artist and songwriter as well as top debut artists. The songwriter hall of fame was much more thorough and detailed. The Time Capsule for each year isn't a huge loss, but they were interesting for context. The Music Review for each year was very interesting; I really miss those.
If the chart years 2006 - 2011 are of critical importance (or if you care deeply about the bubbling under charts), this is a useful edition. If not, stick with the much more detailed and informative 7th edition despite the smaller page size.

A New Look at Glackens

This is the catalogue accompanying the exhibition at the Museum of Art in Fort Lauderdale, Florida (February to June 2014); the Parrish Art Museum in Water Mill, New York (July to October 2014); and the Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (November 2014 to February 2015). William Glackens (1870-1938) is a prominent figure in American art, well represented in our major museums and familiar from many exhibitions, most recently perhaps from the centennial reprise of the great Armory Show of 1913 mounted by the New-York Historical Society (see my review on this website). As chairman of the committee charged with selecting American entries for that groundbreaking show, and as the major art advisor to Albert Barnes and an authorized purchaser of paintings for his vast collection, Glackens exerted an influence on the development of American art far beyond the example of his own artistic practice. The current show is therefore all the more welcome for being the first comprehensive exhibition of his work in almost fifty years, and its excellent catalogue is among the few lengthy considerations of his oeuvre as a whole. The volume is edited by the art historian Avis Berman and presents essays by nine prominent scholars and curators who consider Glackens's art from a number of perspectives that include both his historical and social situation and the aesthetic innovations of his style. These essays are all authoritative, informative, and very well documented; among the topics addressed are his earlier work (to about 1913) in newspaper, magazine and book illustration; the lightening of his palette as he moves from Manet to Monet as models; his images of the new urban woman and her occupations; his painting of fashion as an indicator of social status and sexual customs; relations with other artists like Robert Henri, Maurice Prendergast, Alfred Maurer, The Eight, etc.; still lifes and flower paintings; and, especially, his reception and transformation of French art, which for him was the basis of all American art. What emerges from these discussions is the picture of an American artist completely aware of and consciously cultivating his roots in the art of Manet and the Impressionists through to the Fauves and the Nabis, whose originality consists in the idiosyncratic manner of his avowed borrowings from the likes of Renoir, Cézanne, Matisse, Derain and others, and whose individual artistic evolution reflects the historical trajectory of French painting in the latter third of the nineteenth century.

The volume is beautifully illustrated, with 103 plates in excellent color, most of them full-page, and about ninety companion illustrations, mostly three or four to a page. There are also a few double-page reproductions and a generous number of blow-up detail studies as chapter frontispieces. It is a good, comprehensive collection representing all phases and genres of Glackens's work. The apparatus consists of an exhibition history of the artist from 1892 to 2012, which seems to be exhaustive and should be very welcome to scholars; a three-page chronology of the artist's life; an exhibition checklist with pertinent curatorial data; a selected bibliography; and a comprehensive index. The volume itself is very handsomely designed with easily legible print and an uncluttered page layout and, at 13-1/2" x 10", a bit larger than the average exhibition catalogue. An excellent new look at a familiar American artist, and highly recommended.

Glackens' work well-delivered and worth having in my art book library

Wonderfully printed, great compilation of Glackens' work. The price was better than what it sold for at the Barnes Foundation, which was a pleasant surprise. I received it quickly and well-packaged.
