A Comprehensive Guide For Beginner Or Expert

I have worked with old telephones for more than 40 years, and the repair and restoration of them is part of my livelihood. I can state, with authority, that Ralph Meyer has brought together everything a person needs to know about old telephone theory, repair, restoration, and history. I highly recommend Old Time Telephones! to beginners and seasoned collectors or technicians who need an indispensable reference source. Dr. Meyer's book sets the standard for old telephone reference material.

Improve the Quality of your Telephoning, Throw away your cell

I fell in love with old telephones when I bought my first oak wall telephone at an uncle's farm sale in S/E Minnesota way back in 1967. It didn't make any difference to me that it didn't work ... I just liked oak. I bought more wall phones, oak, then walnut and even one with a cherrywood case. The house got filled up with phones that were as much as 5 feet tall. I started collecting desk telephones and candlestick telephones instead. Very few of them worked but that didn't make any difference ... it was a history thing. Besides, I had no training in telephony and there weren't any books on the subject anyway.

And back then most folks, including me, were scared to death of Ma Bell's "Telephone Police."

But now Dr. Meyer's book is out ... I already knew the history of most of my phones but now with the information in Dr. Meyer's book I can actually make some of those old timers work again. If you are a newcomer to the telephone collecting hobby, you have a tremendous advantage over me ... it took me 40 years to learn the history of the telephone. You can buy Dr. Meyer's book, learn the history of the telephone in one weekend and at the same time have the technical information provided to you that will enable you to put grandpa's phone back on line again. The telephones from the 40s, 50s and 60s were the best ever made.

Put your offshore throwaway phone in the drawer ... use Old-Time Telephones as a guide to hook up grandpa's Western Electric 302 or 500 set, or a comparable A/E, Stromberg or Kellogg phone ... put a good phone in service in your house.

BTW ... I don't recall that Dr. Meyer's book gives instructions on the use of a rotary dial. You and your kids will have to figure out on your own how to do that.

A Valuable Reference of Telephone Technical Information

I bought Dr. Meyer's first book, Old-Time Telephones, fifteen years ago. It was a great reference on the technical workings of the telephone concepts from the early years. Dr. Meyers out does himself with his Second edition of Old-Time Telephones. He has expanded the information provided in the first reference and added much new data in twenty-two chapters. Including high quality print, pictures, drawings, etc. of circuits, transmitters, receivers, induction coils and wiring schematics. At first glance you will recognize the dedication and time Dr. Meyers has contributed to this reference. He explains the concepts and early developments of the ninetieth century pioneers who developed telegraph systems prior to the invention of the telephone. Meyers explains the experiments of Bell, Gray and others who developed and invented telephone communication, used for more that a century. He has dissected and compares telephone circuits of major manufactures of the last century up to and including the present times. Dr Meyers has written all this in simple language anyone can understand. Old Time Telephones 2nd Edition has received some great reviews from numerous telephone collectors who have worked in the industry and collected telephones, more than thirty years. This book is a valuable reference of technical information for anyone interested in telephone communications past and present. Enjoy!!

Clear and comprehensive treatment of the subject

McKay and Brown's new book on teaching and assessing EIL is written in extremely clear language. Its elegant syntheses of research in the various areas gives students and those interested in EIL a fair and balanced view of the research that has been done. What is particularly excellent about the book is the way that the authors interrogate even basic concepts in order to ensure a clear and deep understanding of the subject matter.

Every woman should read this

I don't have cancer, but feel well-armed with the right questions and early info should I ever have to learn to live with a chronic illness. Carol's story is enlightening and touching. I read it in one sitting the day it came in the mail. Her honesty about her denial was an eye-opener. We all know someone with some form of cancer, and this book will help me deal with it. I'm also encouraged that there are oncologists out there who are willing to work with alternative therapies, and that the alternative therapies are now available to us here in the US. There is going to be a worn path to Pocatello! Thank you, Carol, for sharing with, teaching, and helping so many.

Best I've ever read

I found this gem quite by accident when attending a conference on breast cancer. The title caught my attention because I have long felt that the beaurocracy of the FDA and other parties in the US have reduced alternatives available to those who hear "You have cancer."

This book is informative, yet reads somewhat like a novel. It is not only applicable to breat cancer but to almost anyone who has cancer or a family member or friend that does.(this likely is the entire population)
It details that you have to be your own medical advocate and the author's courage is an inspiration to all.

We are definately going to check out the alternative method in the book. I like the fact that there is science involved. A search of the web has so many snake oil salespeople that would want you to believe they are the next Jonas Salk, this book is informative real life, real answers.

About the Author
Mark Whitelock's enthusiasm for motorsports was started when his father took him to Goodwood on Easter Monday 1957. His knowledge of the sport grew in the 1960s, giving him a special affinity with the 1-1/2-litre Formula 1. By the early 1990s he had become disillusioned by contemporary Grand Prix racing and turned his attention to historic racing. A retired banker, Whitelock lives in East Sussex, England.

Lotus 18 v. the Coopers

The author pits Lotus in the late 1950s against Cooper, arguing that Chapman was stuck on the superiority of the front-engine race car, while Cooper figured out that a mid-engine configuration could compete against heavier and more powerful cars. As Chapman is credited with inventing lightness and simplicity, this is a gauntlet at the feet of the faithful, of which I am one.

I read with interest the early chapters about the first Lotus single seaters, the svelte, front-engined 12 and 16, failures against the Coopers -- and most everything else, too -- and Chapman's turn to that odd creation, the boxy, even homely, and the mostly unremarkable mid-engined 18, which was an immediate success, albeit undermined by reliability problems. (Let us give special thanks to Lotus' sequential gearbox, the "queer box", which gets discussed in every Lotus history, usually with derision, but was way ahead of its time -- someone should write a history of that!)

The author argues that Lotus' 18 succeeded by applying careful engineering analysis to its suspension design and geometry, while Coopers relied on ham-fisted arrangements. This is a very interesting point and I wanted to understand more about the differences between the cars, but there was little direct comparison or detail.

The second half of the book describes races and results, private entrants, changes to the 18, an interesting chapter on the 19 sports-racing car, and remaining examples of the 18.

My interest in Coopers whetted, I have started Doug Nye's tome on the mark. It is interesting to see the late-'40s single-seat, 500-cc, mid-engined Formula Three Coopers, followed by front-engined cars, and then the 1957 return to the mid-engine layout.

If you have never traded wine before, the idea of wine as an investment might seem mystifying or impractical, given the physical heft of a dozen wine bottles cordoned off in a wooden case. Despite perceptions that wine is simply a beverage, or at best a collectible, the fact is that a particular category of Investment-Grade Wines (IGWs) has emerged in recent years as its own alternative investment class, with characteristics similar to high-yield bonds, gold, and fine art. These assets are largely uncorrelated with stocks, so they provide a greater level of portfolio diversification and risk reduction. You may be surprised to know that returns on IGW have dependably outperformed blue-chip stocks over the past fifty years. Fine wines have become very easy to trade online and you don't even need your own cellar to store them. Despite rising prices, IGWs are still among the least expensive, easily tradable, and most profitable investment opportunities around.

Blame it on the exploding popularity of fine wine as a consumable. Though long associated with highbrow affairs like a gala, a black-tie event at a local museum, or maybe a dinner among investment bankers celebrating the closing of a billion-dollar deal on Wall Street, wine is increasingly finding a fan base in more mainstream markets. It's now found for sale at Nascar races, and some tracks even offer wine-tasting programs for race patrons. One of Nascar's most famous sons, Jeff Gordon, makes wine under his own label and owns a collection of rare wines that has been featured in the pages of Wine Spectator magazine.

But it's outside America where the economic trends are really driving the growth in the finest wines. The rise of global wealth, particularly in Asia, Russia, and other emerging parts of the world, combined with increasing awareness about wine, has spawned an unprecedented demand for what I call investment-grade wines. Not among investors, mind you, but among consumers who suddenly have the discretionary dollars to splurge on some of the best wines money can buy. Due to the unique properties of these investment-worthy wines, the world has entered an era where continually decreasing supply meets continually increasing demand for the relatively limited supply of the world's greatest wines. Where this sort of supply-demand dynamic emerges, you suddenly have...an investment opportunity.

Little wonder, then, that Wall Street has latched onto the idea that fine wine now has investment-grade characteristics. Fine-wine investment funds have launched in the United Kingdom, the United States, and Australia in the last few years, and all are solely in the business of profiting off the price appreciation that is basically unavoidable in certain wines. Why is this price appreciation unavoidable? In a word, consumption. Unlike other assets, wine is drunk by buyers. Over time, fewer and fewer bottles exist of the comparatively small lot of the world's best wines that, themselves, are improving with age. The result: Every time someone pulls the cork on a bottle of 1982 Château Pétrus -- one of the truly great wines -- the remaining supply of that vintage rises in value. No one will ever own the last tradable share of IBM. But one day, someone will own the last known bottle of '82 Pétrus, and that bottle might just be worth enough to buy a winery.

Like stocks and bonds, fine wine even has its own index of prices now. The London International Vintners Exchange (Liv-ex) is an electronic exchange of about 150 merchants and professional traders in the global fine-wine market. Liv-ex produces the Liv-ex 100 Index, which is to wine what the Dow Jones Industrial Average is to U.S. stocks -- the leading blue-chip index. In Liv-ex's case, the blue chips are 100 of some of the most widely traded fine wines from the French regions of Bordeaux, Burgundy, Champagne, and the Rhône, as well as some of the Super Tuscans from Italy. The Liv-ex 100 is used by wine merchants, wine funds, and investors around the globe to price the wine they own or want to invest in.

In another sign that fine wine is a recognized investment class, in 2006 Bloomberg, the New York purveyor of global financial data, began listing the Liv-ex 100 alongside such storied investment indices as the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the Standard & Poor's 500.

Fact is, wine investing has become so easy that many wine enthusiasts have become accidental -- and successful -- investors almost overnight, simply by dint of what's tucked away in their cellar. Indeed, if you find yourself sitting on a small wine collection, you might already be a de facto wine investor. It is easier than ever to buy and sell investment-grade wine. Over the past decade, the market has radically shifted from a brick-and-mortar, merchant-centric business into one that is reviewer driven and Internet based, making it just as easy these days to research and trade wine as it is to trade stocks and mutual funds through an online brokerage firm. The online merchants provide the exchange through which to buy and sell; the reviewers and their universally recognized scores provide a standard of measure that crosses currencies, language, and tastes, and allows buyers in Hong Kong to effectively deal with sellers in New York on equal terms. In addition, the many professional wine-storage businesses that have popped up across the country in recent years have greatly helped to facilitate wine trading.

So, whether you're a wine lover who wants to become an investor or an investor who wants to know more about wine, this book is for you. I've written it to help collectors and investors alike make sense of the investment side of wine -- all that you need to know to make appropriate decisions, everything from selecting the proper wines to storing them properly. In these pages you'll learn about the criteria I've used to identify successful wine investments over the years. My intent is to share the information that has helped me acquire one of the world's largest, most profitable rare wine portfolios.

And who am I to write authoritatively on wine?

Wine is my profession. As a third-generation wine merchant, I've had a front-row view of this business my entire life. I have experienced from an insider's perspective all of the dramatic market changes in an industry that, because of the global reach of the Internet, is transforming on a fundamental level. I know fine wine because I drink it, because I live it, and because I love it. I was fortunate enough to literally age alongside some of the world's finest of wines. While most of my friends were taking their first sips of beer from Dad's mug, I was sampling my father's 1961 Pétrus.

The business I now run -- Sokolin LLC -- was founded by my grandfather immediately after Prohibition was repealed in December 1933. For decades, the store then known as Dave's Liquors was among New York City's best-established purveyors of spirits. But when my father, William Sokolin, took over in the 1950s, he made the radical decision to focus solely on the sale of top-flight wines. During this time in America there was virtually no market awareness nor any notable appreciation of fine wines, let alone consumers. Bill's own fascination with wine was spurred by an Alfred Hitchcock movie he'd chanced to see, Dial M for Murder, starring Grace Kelly as the wife of the debonair Ray Milland, with glass in hand. The sophistication and glamour of that scene resonated in him, instilling a vision of what he wanted the family business to become. Ironically, the wine in that film was Mateus, a markedly unsophisticated rosé. At a time when cocktails were the beverages of choice among America's imbibers, Bill began his oenological education and that of his customers with the sale of this humble brand. To everyone's benefit, he later graduated from Mateus to Pétrus.

Bill changed the name of the business to D. Sokolin and began to emulate the business model established centuries ago by the wine traders of Great Britain. In 1959, he pioneered the sale of wine futures in America, allowing his customers to lock in a supply of fine French wines that the châteaux would not bottle and release to the public for another eighteen months or so. With unflagging enthusiasm, he played a role in educating New Yorkers about wines and the idea of holding fine wines for investment. He would tell customers to buy an extra case for each case they purchased, advising them that they could drink one case and later sell off a second case to finance their collection. His advice worked.

Under my management starting in 1996, D. Sokolin has evolved into a high-tech wine-sales and -storage facility located in Bridgehampton, New York. When I began my career in 1992, our most successful salespeople knew the vintage of Napoleon's favorite Pichon-Lalande. They were great storytellers with a passion for the history and the lore of wine. Today, our best brokers not only know the stories behind the wine, they also have a sense of the market and a keen knowledge of scores and prices. They see wine as not just a liquid but a liquid asset.

What you'll find in the coming pages is my personal experience distilled. This is the modern guide to wine from an investor's perspective. A lot has changed in the twenty years since my father coined the term investment-grade wines (IGW). My efforts not only cover the basics of wine investing, but they also explain how the wine market has dramatically changed because of the rise of the Internet, the emergence of cult boutique wines that work wine lovers into a frenzy, and the economic shifts that these days allow French châteaux to regularly ratchet the prices of their best Bordeaux higher.

Here's what you won't find: a wine education. Plenty of books have been written to help consumers become better wine drinkers. Investing in Liquid Assets: Uncorking Profits in Today's Global Wine Market has been the best book that I have been able to source covering this intersting niche in investing. I thought all of the recent good press concerning fine wine investment was too good to be true and thus decided to do some proper research to find holes in the claims. Sokolin breaks down the wine investment industry methodically and explains very clearly all of the important factors that influence the price of fine wines. The book details more than merely the Bordeaux region, covering Burgundy which is uncommon in similar texts which largely ignore anywhere outside of Bordeaux when dicussing the investment side of wine. The author provided all of the fine wine solutions that I was looking for in terms of what kind of returns to reasonably expect and how exactly to go about it including finding reputable sources. The wine investment strategies outlined in the "Picking Profits" chapter has served me well in my endeavors so far.
A definite thumbs-up for this read - An excellent introduction to an interesting world.

Must Have For Serious Wine Collectors

Dave Sokolin is the most dynamic and entrepreneurial man in the American wine trade, involved in everything from vineyards to retailing, but mostly in the business of making money from investing in wine. If you really want to know how the business of wine works, buy this book. You might make some money, too, in a commodity that is highly non-correlative with equity investments.

A book like this is long overdue. It's both authoritative and readable--a rare combination. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in investment grade wine, whether casually or professionally.
