Solid Introductory Resource

Book that provides a basic background to all aspects of media planning with chapters ranging from 'HUT, PUT, and PUR' to 'Psychographics/Clustering', to 'Negotiating a Media Buy'. Definitions and basic terms are well set apart from the rest of the text and explained clearly and one chapter builds upon the ones before in a way that makes it easy to read without feeling overwhelmed. Written in 1995, the book is hampered a bit by being entirely lacking in any reference to Internet advertising.

Ouch!

Jim Surmanek may know a great deal about media planning. However, most of the people who attempt to read this book will never discover that. Why? Jim does not know how to communicate effectively. I have not made it too far into this book, and every inch has been a struggle. What I have learned thus far could have been expressed in one, maybe two, paragraphs.
Jim's opening sentence (in his Introduction to the book) reads, "Advertising media are dynamic and ever changing." Traditionally the opening sentence in any book is very important: The first sentence is the sentence that is to hook the reader, engage us, entice us, make a proposal that the writer will later explain and document. The first sentence must be superbly well constructed. It must do something meaningful. Jim took this valuable space and chose to say one thing twice, and repeat himself while being redundant. Good heavens, wasn't that fun? An opening sentence that says "media does not stay the same" is not very engaging or informative. Perhaps Jim assumes that most of his readers don't know that. Perhaps Jim thinks most of readers are watching a black and white nine-inch screen, have never heard of cable, and have to wait for the tubes in their radios to warm up before they can listen to the weekly episode of Mystery Theatre.
His next sentence reads, "The entire spectrum of media outlets changes almost daily." (Jim explains "change": new radio or television stations, changed formats, new magazines, etc.) Now, how can that be true? That the entire spectrum would change almost daily. That the spectrum changes daily, yes. But the entire spectrum of media outlets changes almost daily? Does he really mean to tell his readers that nearly every radio and television station, nearly every magazine and newspaper, and nearly every billboard changes owners or formats nearly every day? No, but that is what he says.
I skipped the first two chapters to take a look at Chapter 3, "HUT, PUT, and PUR." Appropriately enough, Jim explains what HUT, PUT, and PUR are. Several times. That is, several times before he repeats himself. He also shares some fascinating data with us: "People Using Radio (PUR) levels also vary." (That is important for the readers to know because most of the readers have no idea that people turn their radios on and off.)
Jim continues, "Adult listening peaks in the 6-10 P.M. period..." Now that didn't make sense to me. I thought adults listened to their radios more during "drive time" and while at work than when they got home in the evenings. So I looked at the table attached to this text (3.3) only to discover that of the five time periods Arbitron reports (and Jim uses in the table), the two busiest adult time periods are the 6 AM to 10 AM and the 10 AM to 3 PM periods. In fact, the time period Jim claims as the "adult peak," has less than half as many listeners as these morning/daytime periods. The only time with a smaller audience than Jim's "adult peak" is the Midnight to 6 AM time period!
As I continue along, still in Chapter 3, I see a Table (3.4) with a whole bunch of numbers. Jim never references this table or explains what it reveals. The numbers don't seem to relate to anything else in the chapter. I also notice that Table 3.4 is followed by a second Table 3.2 that does not give the same data as the first Table 3.2.
If you want to be thoroughly confused, love misinformation, enjoy reading the same "fact" presented three or four times, and want to be talked to like a child, buy this book. Savor it; it is a gem.
If I could return this book I would. I can't. Fortunately I live in a cold climate. I have a fireplace. I will put this book to good use.

Like Lobster a la Riseholme Gone Bad

For this Luciaphil, any pastiche that purports to carry on the minutiae of the beloved characters Mapp and Lucia of Tilling is an object of literary interest and desire. Most recently the drawing room skullduggery and social politicking waged by Lucia Pillson and Elizabeth Mapp, mistresses of one-upmanship were in the skillful literary hands of Guy Fraser Sampson. So it was with anticipatory joy that I saw that Ian Shepherd has attempted to revive (in every meaning of the word! -- those who have read Sampson's "Au Reservoir" will know what I mean) the Lucia comedies of manners.

How wrong I was! Where can I begin with the missteps that Ian Shepherd has perpetrated in his tepid and aimless collection of bound pages (for I refuse to call his work a novel)? While there is no inherent crime in a work of fiction being self-published or published on a small press, I will never understand how self-publication seems to translate into sloppy editing, misspellings, and poor word choices. For example, Shepherd wrote of "enlargen" rooms (does he mean "to enlarge"?). Shepherd and his publisher also seem to have only passing acquaintance with the conventions of paragraphs and spacing. There are passages of the novel that have inexplicably wide bands of white space -- usually signaling a change of scene or character. In the case of "Three Cheers" the wide spaces inconsistently mottle the text with no rhyme or reason. Shepherd also peppers the dialogue with unnecessary exclamation points. The only clear exclamatory catchphrase among the Tilling society is "No!"

The greatest offenses beyond the purely mechanical, however, are instances where Shepherd appears unfaithful to the characterizations of Mapp, Lucia, and the other residents of beloved Tilling. Lucia, for all her bluestocking ways, is well known to have a dread of any physical contact. Yet Shepherd has Mapp (of all people!) "embracing Lucia with the gusto one might embrace a lost child...." In another instance, Georgie (of all people!) kisses Lucia on the lips! Mapp is also allowed to speak Italian - "Sono cosi felice rivederti!" -- la bella lingua that hitherto was the sole province of Lucia and Georgie to utter their five words or five phrases. One of the many half-baked plot lines involves Mallards House. In a glaring misstep Georgie declared about Mapp: "I don't know why she ever left the place." Any devoted follower of Mapp and Lucia will know the series of unfortunate events that led to Mapp having to sell Mallards. Siriami shares, anyone? Georgie is described as doing crochet instead of his usual needlepoint.

I could go on for the literary and composition blunders in "Three Cheers for Lucia" are legion. To sum up, however, Shepherd's work is a bore. The elusive charm of the Lucia novels is that nothing monumental ever happens in the lives of members of Tilling society, yet the characters are fascinating. In Ian Shepherd's inept handling, the tedium and emptiness of Lucia and Co. is laid bare. At its worst the novel seems to be little more than an exercise in cramming in names of public figures of the post-World War II years: Nancy Mitford, Elizabeth David (I had to look her up), Noel Coward, Edward Maufe, and even Elizabeth II.

I will conclude my review paraphrasing the one accurate passage Shepherd wrote for Georgie: "... I don't wish to mention it ("Three Cheers for Lucia") ever again. The whole business has left a nasty taste in my (literary) mouth."

A Self-Published Mess

As a Mapp and Lucia addict I welcomed a new addition. While the story will suffice, this self-published novel is a mess. Typos, mis-spellings and grammatical mistakes abound. Self-publication is no excuse for sloppy editing. The author should be ashamed.

Enjoyed this little tale that brought Lucia back to life again after a recent near death experience at the hands of another author. A couple of akward plot devices that should have been avoided but overall, most enjoyable to this fan of the Mapp and Lucia stories.

Vunak Is The Best

Paul Vunak is the best when it comes to reality based self defense. Some people on here, write reviews and tell you this guy is a joke. They would be mistaken with that judgment. I bought this book looking to learn some effective self defense if they day would come that I needed to use it. This was money well spent, and I really wanted the book after learning that this is some of the same things that the Navy Seals, and other military branches, as well as the police use. I don't think this material is outdated in any way, as this stuff can be applied in today's world. There is also an awesome section on knife defense that you should check out.

short and sweet

This is a decent book, short and sweet. It does show some technique sequences but it is really about demonstrating his principles: rapid assault tactics (RAT), kino mutai, defanging the snake. He uses these to cover the areas of standing, ground fighting, and weapons. You are not going to learn to fight from a book, but Vunak presents some solid ideas.
Some may think Vunak is too basic, especially experienced martial artist, but I think he is right on the money keeping things simple and effective and avoiding complicated techniques. If you agree with that approach, I strongly encourage you to check out his Street Safe videos.

Upon further study - Not convinced

Upon much criticism from my fellow readers, I have purchased this book and read and studied it in depth. I appreciate what Mr. Vunak has done for the martial arts and what this book contributes to the subject. However, I feel this work has failed to convince the reader of the effectiveness of his techniques.
1. I disagree with the assertion that NHB techniques are ineffective in a street fight. NHB techniques are easily adapted to a street fight. NHB events have less rules than boxing, kickboxing, wrestling, sport jiu-jitsu, and judo...NHB competition, while not as lawless as a street fight, is the most realistic laboratory of martial prowess to date. How would Lennox Lewis do in a street fight? Ernesto Hoost? Kurt Angle? Jean-Jacques Machado? Gene Labelle? I think we would all agree that they would perform well...yet they fight with rules more constraining than NHB fighters...but we argue that NHB techniques don't work? Frank Shamrock wouldn't make it on the street? Tito Ortiz wouldn't? Rickson Gracie wouldn't?
2. I find the anectdotal evidence not credible. The author relates a bar fight (pg 15-16) with a fellow instructor and 3 Navy SEALs (who each weighed 300 pounds and all were olympic caliber wrestlers) against 20 bikers in order to disprove the effectiveness of NHB techniques. Are you serious? I have been in the spec ops community for over a decade and have habitually trained and worked with the east & west coast SEALs and have yet to meet a SEAL who is 300 pounds and a former olympic wrestler...but the author managed to find three in one place...are you kidding?
3. The examples presented are not realistic. Page 25 shows a guy throwing a jab and then keeping his arm sticking straight out while he is hit in the biceps, kicked in the knee, punched in the face, kicked in the stomach, and then shin kicked in the leg. The whole time, the person being pummeled never moves or even flinches....So you find this one way beating realistic...with no reaction whatsoever from yoru opponent...but not NHB events? And, by the way, all of these techniques are legal in NHB, but they don't win fights even there.
4. Again, pgs 26-27 are not realistic. The loser of the fight is shin kicked, punched, gouged, head butted and then elbowed...and the guy just stands there like a scarecrow and gets beaten...that's realistic? Your opponent won't react...or fall to the ground? or fight back?
5. Another issue I have is with pgs 28-36. Clearly, the techniques shown only work aganst another fighter using the same, stand up style. You can beat every one of these techniques with just one technique...the double leg takedown.
6. Most of the techniques shown are low percentage moves, hard to master, and not feasible by the average person. Try hitting someone in the bicep as he punches you in the head...try to kick someone in the small of his back as he hits you with a spinning back kick (pg 49). I believe most martial arts techniques are unrealistic and impossible to master. What I want to see for a self-defense technique is simplicity, reliability, and effectiveness.
7. "Kino mutai (the art of pinching and biting)allows us to circumvent the jiu-jitsu game"-pg 54. I disbelieve the claim that biting is the solution to fighting a grappler. Go fight Ryan Gracie, Dan Henderson, and Mark Coleman...just bite them and you will beat them. Are you kidding? The grappler/NHB fighter can make minor adjustments to defeat your biting easily. Pg 56 shows your opponent being bitten on his Lat...are you telling me that that biting can't be easily defeated? The top guy places his forearm on the bottom fighters throat...no more biting...only choking. Pg 58 shows an opponent being bitten on the ear...but he can bite your ear just as easily. Superior body positioning will defeat eye gouging, biting and groin strikes. Just as superior body positioning will allow you to bite, gouge, and groin strike with impunity. BJJ and wrestlers are the masters of body positioning...and dominate NHB events...but you think they can't fight on the street.
8. The criticism is that grapplers can not fight multiple attackers, but stand up fighters can. However, the stand up fighter can't handle one grappler. I would argue you can modify grappling to be as effective as the JKD fighter, using the clinch and tie up to set up your opponent for strikes. Where in this book from pg 1-128 is there realistic (or any, for that matter)examples of fighting multiple attackers? I believe I missed it.
9. Good points. I like the knife and stick fighting techniques...I buy into the defang the serpent philosophy as the underlying concepts are sound and ralistic. I buy the blast attack theory...with your opponent going backwards, he is at a disadvantage and you at a huge advantage. That's why the takedown and clinch in NHB is so effective...your opponent can not react fast or effectively enough to stop you. The philosophies and theories presented throughout this book give much food for thought...an excellent intellectual exercise.
10. Summary. Please consider: Fighting has evolved and the greatest martial laboratory in history is happening in front of our eyes...its called MMA competition. To ignore these lessons are folly. The stand up arts like JKD and Kung-Fu work against themselves only...not the takedown artist. The grappler/NHB fighter can easily adapt his techniques to defeat biting, gouging and groin strikes through superior body positioning...the stand up fighter can't and won't. NHB is not real life, but it is the most realistic training and competition to date. Adapt and evolve or stick your head in the sand like the dinosaur.

Dex started his engine and got mine going too!

I received a free copy of this book for the promise of an honest review.

I'm not really into motorcycles or bikers. This isn't something I would have picked to read on my own. But a promise is a promise, and I try to keep mine. So I delved into the pages of "DEX", trying to keep an open mind.
I quickly found myself sucked into the story. As it starts, Dex has spent the past thirteen years in prison for something he didn't do. He was framed. The truth has finally come out and he has been set free, and has returned to his hometown and the Great Wolves Motorcycle Club. He's not back for long when he runs into is former girlfriend, Ava. He set her free when he went to prison so that she could have a life of her own. But the sparks are still there for both of them, and man do they fly! They ignite all over the pages off and on (mostly on) for the rest of the book. These are some really hott, smokin' scenes! These two are bound to each other heart and soul and can't keep their hands or anything else off of each other. Meanwhile there is the very interesting story about the Motorcycle Club going on. Dex being back threatens the chain of command. It also threatens their enemies, those who framed Dex and had him sent to prison in the first place. As the story unfolds the tension and retribution keeps building up to its inevitable climax. It is so tense and I simply couldn't put it down. I found myself really liking and cheering on these tough, rugged and handsome biker men. And Ava, meanwhile, although she loves Dex, has misgivings about dealing with the uncertainties of being a biker's woman again. She's not the fearless girl she was thirteen years ago.
I really found myself riveted to this book, and I didn't expect to be. But things keep on moving along and it really drew me in. Now I am so looking forward to reading the sequel, "Sly", and finding out more about the club president and the other men of Great Wolves. A great read!

REALLY??? THIS ISNT A CLIFF HANGER????

I detest cliff hangers but the author stated its a stand alone read and IS NOT a cliff hanger. Maybe I'm confused but when the ending says someone is airborne and he knew he was :f'd
And thats the ending...THAT IS A CLIFF HANGER.
Did everyone one else not notice this???????
Hence, my poor rating. Its a typical MC story. ..bad guys knocking off the better guys, lots of catchup sex and finally what we thought was an ending.....UNTIL THE CLIFF HANGER.

I received this as an ARC for an honest review
Dex went to prison 13 years ago for a crime he did not commit. Now he is a free man after his daughter has brought forth new evidence showing he was set up. Dex is not sure where he fits into life now after all that time. Regrets…yeah he has those…the biggest of which is Ava. Dex pushed her out of his life back then thinking he would never be free. He told her to make a life for herself….and that is what she has done. Dex has never stopped loving her and never will. He finds out she never married and is still in town. Sly, the club president and brother Dex never had, lets Ava know Dex is back. She is shocked and overwhelmed by feelings she never felt she would face again. Their first meeting after his return is less than stellar. Both have hard decisions to make where they are concerned. Dex knows he wants her but he also wants revenge for the man who framed him. Ava is not sure what she wants or what is best for her right now. Complications put them at odds. Can these two find a compromise that works for both of them or will Ava walk away for good…taking his heart with her ??
