Except among connoisseurs and geeks, typefaces have been seen but rarely talked about by the public at large. Admittedly, this is a pretty arcane subject, and the term "crystal goblet," coined by the type expert Beatrice Ward in 1932, perfectly describes the desired transparency of typefaces as vessels of words and ideas, not eye-stoppers that draw attention to themselves. But with the computer, "font" has entered the vernacular, and almost every keyboard jockey has become an aficionado. In this new context, typography has taken center stage, increasingly more art than craft, and many artful (and artless) typographical compositions are filling galleries and museums. These days, type has become something, shall we say, of an experience.

Few type designers working today are more ostentatious, or have created more of these experiences, than 41-year-old Jonathan Barnbrook, a British graphic designer who practices what could be called agit-type. Many of his compositions, collected in his first monograph, BARNBROOK BIBLE: The Graphic Design of Jonathan Barnbrook (Rizzoli, $75), are designed to challenge, if not agitate, the reader. They are so deliberately kinetic and chaotic that they require time and effort to fully decipher. Few of his compositions satisfy Ward's demand for the crystal-clear -- not even the cover, the title pages or the essay layouts that constitute a large part of this book. So they ask for an investment on the part of the reader but are ultimately always decipherable, even readable, particularly in good light. About the Author
Jonathan Barnbrook founded his own design studio, Virus, in London in 1990 and quickly revolutionized the world of typography. His work has been exhibited at The Gagosian Gallery (NY), Museum of Contemporary Art (LA), White Cube (London) and Saatchi Galleries (London). He has won two D&AD Awards, the Epica Grand Prix, The Tokyo Type Director’s Club Gold Prize, and the Art Director’s Club of New York Best of Show Award.

Drawing from a broad expanse of resources (personal interviews, newspaper and magazine articles, primary and secondary book accounts), she spins the stories of 11-year-old Harriet Hanson, who joined striking workers in the Lowell, Mass., mills of the 1830s; 16-year-old Pauline Newman, a leader of the 1907 New York City rent protests and nicknamed "The New Joan of Arc"; as well as myriad other children who began to realize the unfairness of the conditions in which they worked and who took steps to change their situations. Grade 5-8-This well-researched and well-illustrated account creates a vivid portrait of the working conditions of many American children in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Chapters are devoted to the Lowell, MA, textile-factory girls who worked 13-hour days as well as New York City's "newsies," who sold papers for Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst. The strikers included are not only those who protested unfair work conditions, but they also highlight individuals like Pauline Newman, who, at 16, organized residents to protest their high rents during the New York City rent strike of 1907. Another chapter includes Mother Jones's famous march from Philadelphia to Oyster Bay, Long Island, to meet with President Teddy Roosevelt. Like the Pied Piper, she led striking children, and others, in an effort to reform labor laws so that youngsters would no longer work under inhumane and unsafe conditions. Chapter notes and a time line of federal child-labor laws are appended. Many black-and-white photos of both children at work and on strike help to make their plight real and personalize their stories. A fine resource for research as well as a very readable book.

A comprehensive examination of the socioeconomic factors that spurred the formation of child organized strikes, this historical tour de force elucidates why child labor laws were developed and continue to be such a necessity. Bartoletti (No Man's Land, p. 627, etc.) looks at the major industries that profited from the exploitation of child labor and how those employed by such operations worked to create a better environment for themselves and others. While there is mention of the ``Newsie Strike'' in New York City and the fate of the sharecroppers in the southern cotton industry, the garment and coal mining industries loom as the real villains in child labor issues. Bartoletti provides numerous examples of how debilitating poverty drove entire families to work in utter squalor and suffer cruel treatment at the hands of profit-driven conglomerates. Personal stories illuminate the wretched conditions under which many of these children labored, with a focus on the instances when a child mobilized fellow workers to demand their rights. The grit and determination of these children who, in the face of police abuse, bureaucratic negligence, and governmental (even presidential) indifference, banded together for a common cause, and the startling black-and-white photographs, ensure that readers will be alternately awed and appalled by this stunning account of child labor in the US. Good Book for Elementary Level Learning

The book was okay but it reads on perhaps a 5th grade level. I think it would be a good book for elementary students. Was hoping for more indepth study on child labor in the earlier years before the labor laws were enacted protecting children.

The Hobo Philosopher

This is a book about the travails of boys and girls in the labor force in America. It starts in the 1800's with the early beginnings of the American industrial revolution.

We begin this harrowing journey in Lowell, Massachusetts in the Textile mills. Lowell was the first large-scale industrial center designed for the purpose. I imagine that my hometown of Lawrence, Mass was the next.

I know that neither of them was the first textile manufacturing community but they were the first communities "planned" specifically for that purpose.

We follow child laborers from the textile mills, to the streets as Messengers, Bootblacks, and Newsies; then as rent strikers and coal miners and breaker boys and into the garment industry and then back to Lawrence and the "Bread and Roses Strike of 1912."

We touch on black children picking cotton and hit briefly on the migrant kids in the fields and the orchards.
It is pretty rugged stuff but certainly not as rugged as it must have been for those poor children living through this period of American history.

Sadly much of this history has been put aside in the United States. It seems that talking about working people and their hardships in America is un-American - even Communist.
This book points out the part that children have played in the construction of the middle class in America. It is a very interesting perspective. And it tells a story that can't be denied or trivialized. This stuff all happened and it happened to children. It is a sad story. It is another sad story in a long line of American tragedies.

Near the end of this book the author places "A Timeline of Federal Child Labor Laws." This Timeline is also interesting. I will synopsize it here because it makes a huge point that deserves emphasis and repeating:
In 1916 and 1919 the first child labor laws were passed and signed into law by Woodrow Wilson. Fourteen is decided upon as the minimum age for a child to work in an industry and not more than eight hours in any one day. Children who work in the street trades or in agriculture are exempted and not protected under this legislation:

In 1918 and 1922 these minimal provisions for the protection of children were declared to be unconstitutional.

In 1924 an amendment to protect children in the workplace is proposed. It is rejected and not ratified.

In 1929 and 1933 children are being used in place of adults in American industries at cheaper wages. The National Child Labor Committee lobbies the government with the suggestion that a minimum working age for children will keep kids in school and make jobs available for adults.
The author does not say whether this tactic was successful or not, but I imagine that it was not.

In April and May 1933 there was a series of children's strikes in Pennsylvania. (I have no doubt that there were similar strikes elsewhere also.)

In May 1933 these striking children win pay increases and minimum wage laws - for children.

In 1935 these pay increase and minimum wage laws for children are declared unconstitutional.

In 1938 The Fair Labor Standards Act prohibits the employment of children under fourteen and under sixteen while school is in session. This law has other minimum wage provisions and hazardous work considerations.
The author does not say that these laws have been declared unconstitutional as of yet - but I have no doubt that someone out there is working on it. You can bet on that. It may even be that these laws have already been "adjusted."

The Supreme Court has a rather interesting history. It supported injustice when it came to slavery; it supported injustice when it came to Native Americans; it supported injustice when it came to children in the labor force; it supported injustice when it came to adults in the work place; it supported injustice in regard to contract rights; it supported injustice in regard to the rights of women; it supported injustice when it came to the rights of states; it supports injustice in its established Military; it supported injustice in establishing the voting franchise - it seems that the only time it supports justice is when it is dealing with an issue that the court of public opinion demands justice.

It does seem to me that over the decades it has been more important what the American people think than what the Supreme Court thinks. If the vast majority of the American people think opposite to the Supreme Court you can be sure that the Supreme Court will change its mind.

My seven-year-old daughter is reading this book now. This morning, she said to me, "Daddy, I'm so glad you got me this book from the library. But there's one thing I don't like: those companies were so mean! And why? Because of money, that's why! But those people aren't any better than other people are. It's just the way the black people used to be treated, it wasn't fair. People should be treated nicely, not just the rich people, that's what I think." So if you want to nurture a sense of social justice (and maybe a little social rebellion) in your child, this seems to be a good book. I can't wait to read it when she's done.

That is the purpose of book two, in which civilization comes looking for Jane, and runs firmly afoul of the Jungle. A new character joins the Tarzan family.

Telling more than that would ruin the suspense. Suffice it to say that the Jungle is a lusty place, where life is created and taken routinely. These books deal primarily with the creation part of things, though death is dealt with as well.

Warning: This book deals with adult situations, and concepts. Due to the graphic depiction of both sexual acts and violence, this book is not appropriate for those under the age of eighteen.

How can you not enjoy Lubrican's playful imagination?

Again I'm amazed at the author's quirky, creative imagination. In this story he makes the freedom and down-to-earthness of living in the jungle embarrass us with the artificial, "moralistic" rules that we perceive as imposed on us by "civilized" society. It's fun to read. There are some of us who harken back to the days of the 20th century when we were immersed in the life of Tarzan of the Apes.

This book really made me think if that's how things with Tarzan and Jane really happen. It was hilarious. I laugh so much!!!!

Lyubov Makarovna’s words recreate not only the physical devastation of the power station itself, the city next to it, and the people’s bodies and minds that became enmeshed in illness and sorrow, but also the authorities’ desperate, unsuccessful balancing act between the need for knowledge and the shameful cover-ups. At the same time, this atmosphere of mismanagement, human errors, and cowardly avoidance of uncomfortable truths is breathtakingly held up to scorn in the completely genuine opposite reaction also shown: Ordinary people—friends, dying patients, some nurses and doctors, even kind strangers—simply decide to support and take care of each other, because their moral stance allows nothing less.
If a medical “Pripyat syndrome” exists, then it was invented by the well-known syndrome of bureaucratic lies. Still, beyond the dying landscape of this story, a vibrant portrait of human warmth opens up: poetry and music that inspire, simple words of solace by one woman or man to another, arms stretched out in trust and love. Lyubov Makarovna’s faithful conviction that “we shall overcome” is age-old and so vital to humanity that it cannot be obliterated. It is stubbornly alive in this story, nourished by joyful sweeps of nature, golden glimpses of human closeness, and the often sharp humor that illuminate many dark moments. This is true among the people close to Irina, and it is true in Life. With grim satire, a brave and proud woman from Vladivostok, Ariadna Belova, called her years of existence in the bleak Kolyma camps her “Kolyma University,” and, after describing their inhumane daily rhythm, startled her audience with the perplexing conclusion that “even there we laughed.” As both Lyubov Makarovna and Ariadna Ilinichna were forced to learn while their and their co-sufferers’ bodies were breaking, it was their relationships with friends amidst terror that sustained them, and irony blended with sharp humor offered medicine for the soul.

About the Author
Lyubov Makarovna Sirota is a poet, publicist, and playwright, who was born in 1956 in the city of Irtyshesk (Pavlodar oblast) in Kazakhstan. Her childhood and youth were spent in Frunze (today Bishkek), the capital of Kirgizia, where she was a member of the city’s literary association Gornye Zori (“mountain dawns”) and her first poems were published in a Kirgiz periodical. In 1975 Sirota and her parents moved to their ancient homeland, Ukraine, where she graduated from the Faculty of Russian Philology at Dnepropetrovsk State University. She directed the literary associations Poisk (“quest”) in the city of Komsomolsk (Poltava oblast) and, from 1983, “Prometheus” at the Energetik Palace of Culture in Pripyat. After the Chernobyl catastrophe and the evacuation from Pripyat, Sirota has lived in Kiev where she worked as an editor at the Alexander Dovzhenko Film Studio until 1992. The author’s poems, articles, and essays have been published in anthologies, as well as in many journals and newspapers of the former Soviet Union and Ukraine. After her collection of poetry, Nosha (“the burden”), and Rollan Sergienko’s film Porog (“the threshold”) came out, her poems became well-known all over the world. She was the coauthor and a leading character in the film. Sirota’s works have been translated into English, German, Polish, Spanish, Italian, Japanese and other languages. Thanks to Professor Paul Brians, Washington State University, her poems (in English translation by Elisavietta Ritchie and Leonid Levin) have been heard on the U.S. national radio program Terra Infirma, and were published in the following collections: Life on the Line: Selections on Words and Healing; Perspectives from the Past; A Fierce Brightness: Twenty-Five Years of Women’s Poetry; and Perspectives on Modern World History: Chernobyl. Sirota’s poetry has also appeared in Canadian and American journals, including Calyx, Zhinochii Svit, Promin, The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), The New York Quarterly, WISE, The Russell Record Magazine, The Modern Review, and In Our Own Words.

A must read...

This book I can highly recommend everybody to read.
The story from a survivor of the nuclear disasters story of what really happened on that tragic weekend April 1986 will touch the heart of everyone who read her book.
Lyubov have an amazing way of telling her site of the story, her thoughts, fellings ect.
When reading this book, is like having a movie running in our heads. We can easily find ourself in her place.
I was very touched and in some moments had tears in my eyes..
Very well written..

Flow cytometric analysis of molecular, biochemical, genetic and developmental parameters using cellular fluorescence techniques as well as fluorescence-activated (FACS) or magnetic (MACS) cell sorting technologies provide unique options for molecular and cellular biology. In recent years, these technologies have been considerably advanced.
In this second edition, all chapters have been updated according to the recent improvements and modifications. Further, new protocols have been added, such as on magnetic selection, magnetofluorescent liposomes, the cytometry of secreted products and microbead assays, as well as reporter gene assays for cytometry and cell selection. The recent technical developments allow diagnostic differentiation of cells according to specific gene expression, identification of rare disease-associated cells and isolation of well-defined cells at high purity for cell therapies. In basic research, analysis and isolation of cells according to the correlated expression of up to 10 gene products, expressed within, on or around the cell have become possible.

A book for the beginner and a review for the experienced

This is the first book I purchased for flow cytometry after checking out 3 unsatisfactory books on the same subject from the library. I am a clinician by training and so I needed a book that explains the basic background of the method, PLUS detailed procedures to follow, and explanation on how to alter those procedures to suit one's experiment. This book is written and presented in a way that makes it easy to understand even if one has no prior trianing in flow-cytometry. It does not have so much technical jargon that a newbie would not be able to understand. Everything is clear and well-explained. I have "debugged" some of my current procedures using this book. Chapter 3 (Immunofluroescence: Basic Considerations) is a must-read: the validity of one's results seem to largely depend on factors discussed in this chapter. Included also is a list of internet resouce for cytometry, although some of websites have been outdated. Overall a very nice reference, but as in all lab procedures-related books, one book never covers everything you need to know, so I use this book by Radbruch in conjuction with others.
