Appropriately titled! I enjoyed the format for lessons. For a short introductory course, it covers two college semesters worth of instruction in Beginner's Tagalog. From the very first dialogue, you find yourself meeting the objective of this short book -- conversing in your target language! It is sufficient as a stand alone book, but would definitely serve well as a supplement to college text books. You can't beat the price to start speaking Tagalog!

Well-organized and recommended for early study of Tagalog

This is a nice book for a rather low price. It can be used by students or other individuals who are beginning to learn Tagalog. The book is centered around sentences that are common to basic conversations in Tagalog, and it goes in depth in regard to grammar and pronunciation and includes a CD with native-speaker pronunciations of words and sentences in the book. Another useful quality of the book is that it breaks down the sentences word-by-word to show how they are constructed, which is also interesting in making comparison to how sentence construction differs in some ways from common English. There also are some comic illustrations with accompanying conversations to help keep the reader interested, and there are exercises at the end of each chapter for students to complete if the book is being used in that manner. The book material/binding is also of good quality.

Great for beginners

I am learning Tagalog for the first time and this book was recommended to me by my language teacher. I love that it is easy for anyone to understand and the illustrations help tremendously. My grandma (who is a native Tagalog speaker) also favors this book. Highly recommended.

B95 is a robin-sized shorebird, a red knot of the subspecies rufa. Each February he joins a flock that lifts off from Tierra del Fuego, headed for breeding grounds in the Canadian Arctic, nine thousand miles away. Late in the summer, he begins the return journey.

B95 can fly for days without eating or sleeping, but eventually he must descend to refuel and rest. However, recent changes at ancient refueling stations along his migratory circuit―changes caused mostly by human activity―have reduced the food available and made it harder for the birds to reach. And so, since 1995, when B95 was first captured and banded, the worldwide rufa population has collapsed by nearly 80 percent. Most perish somewhere along the great hemispheric circuit, but the Moonbird wings on. He has been seen as recently as November 2011, which makes him nearly twenty years old. Shaking their heads, scientists ask themselves: How can this one bird make it year after year when so many others fall?

Gr 6 Up-Moonbird is a nickname scientists have given to a small Eastern shorebird known for both his unusually long life and his enormously long annual migration. Hoose intertwines the story of this bird's remarkable survival with detailed accounts of the rufa red knot's physical changes through its yearlong cycle of migrating from the bottom of the world (usually Tierra del Fuego) to its Arctic breeding grounds and back again at summer's end-a round trip of some 18,000 miles. Moonbird, known usually by the identifying label "B95" on his orange leg band, was first banded in 1995, when it was thought that he was at least three years old, and Hoose notes sightings of him through early 2011 just as the book was reaching completion. At that point it was estimated that over 20 years' time, B95 had flown "more than 325,000 miles in his life-the distance to the moon and nearly halfway back." The feat is particularly celebrated among bird scientists because this species is rapidly declining as humans use and misuse its feeding grounds and food supply. The threatened state of the species and the personal work being done by scientists and conservationists are strong themes throughout the book. Travel, History, Science, A Love Story ...

This great book has it all: travel, history, science, a mystery, romance, photos, maps -- you name it, this brief book has it. I loved the story of B95, an apparently very determined rufa red knot with the very best athletic genes. I had never before heard of this small shorebird so it was great fun to read and learn and cheer him on in his amazing travels. He has certainly captured the hearts of the scientists who study him, as he has mine and probably the hearts and best wishes of everyone who reads about him and his determination to fly from pole to pole -- 18,000 miles! -- each and every year for food and light and mating.

This book represents the best in American education and should be widely read and studied. Since WE have so brazenly damaged so much of the environment, adversely affecting not only ourselves but most other animal and plant life, we must make it right. We have to rectify these many problems to the best of our ability since we are our best hope for all species of life in this world, and this book gently shows us the way and makes us care.

A book for all times, but not for all readers

Question: How can you ensure that a person will hate a book? Answer: Make her read it for 7th grade English class, make sure that the language is old-fashioned, and above all, make sure that the ideas and concepts are over her head. If that's what happened to you, and that's why you have an aversion to Silas Marner, and you are now over 30, pick it up again. Read it twice. Silas Marner is one of the greatest novels in the English language.
Yes, it starts out sad, as our pathetic hero looses both his trust in humanity and his faith in God. But the power of love replaces his lust for money, and wins out in the end. Meanwhile, morally poor but financially rich, high-living Godfrey Cass provides a counterpoint to simple Silas. At the end there's a surprise when the fate of Godfrey's evil brother is revealed.
When you're all done, before you file Silas Marner on the shelf, go back and read the paragraph about Silas' thoughts when he discovers that his hordes of coins are missing. If you have ever felt sudden extreme loss, you will recognize the stages of despair from disbelief to acceptance "like a man falling into dark water." Which is why this book is not suitable for children, and is most appreciated by those who have undergone their own moral redemption.
Silas has been the inspiration for many other characters, including Dicken's Scrooge. He has been portrayed in movies, including "A Simple Twist of Fate" starring Steve Martin. But none is as good as the original. If you haven't read it since junior high, try it again. Silas Marner is an excellent book. There's a gem of human understanding in every chapter.

A Tale of the Redeeming Power of Love

Silas Marner is an excellent classic novel set in early Nineteenth Century England. In this story, George Eliot (pen name for Mary Ann Evans) depicts a man named Silas Marner, a weaver by trade. He lives happily in his home town of Lantern Yard, until his best friend William Dane betrays him by setting him up as a thief. William then marries Silas' fiancée, and Silas is shunned from the town. He eventually settles in a very small cottage in Raveloe, where he spends his days making cloth and other materials for the townspeople. Due to his now secretive and reclusive ways, the people of Raveloe never really come to know Silas, and he lives in solitude, having turned away from his former faith and happiness.
But one winter's night, a small orphan girl comes to his house, and everything changes. Silas cares for the child (with the help of his neighbor, Mrs. Winthrop, whose family soon befriends him), and his heart begins to soften.
This is a very good representation of the redeeming power of love, and the consequences of a person's actions. For people who enjoy classic literature, this is definitely a must-read.

Pure gold

If you have a heart, the story of Silas Marner will warm it. You are better coming to it fresh, without knowing anything of the simple yet solid plot, so I will say nothing of it. I will just urge you to read this wonderful book. Eliot writes beautifully and from page one, you realize you are in the hands of a true artist. This is a very human, very English story of simple people living through those very basic emotions that make the world turn and give the universe meaning.

I bought the book for a great price to have for my comparative vertebrate morphology class. The chapters are informative without being overwhelming. This is a good textbook to get a solid overview of vertebrate anatomy.

About the Author
Jon M. Werner is a professor in the Department of Management at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. He earned his Ph.D. in Organizational Behavior from Michigan State University. His research has covered topics such as organizational citizenship behavior, training, performance appraisal, legal issues in human resource management, and team effectiveness, as well as actions that managers can engage in to build trust between employees and management. Professor Werner is co-author of MERIT PAY, Second Edition (2005), and serves as Co-editor of Human Resource Development Quarterly, and on the Editorial Board of Academy of Management Learning & Education.

Randy L. DeSimone is an associate professor in the Department of Management and Marketing at Rhode Island College in Providence, RI. He earned his Ph.D. in Industrial/Organizational Psychology from the University of Akron. His research and teaching interests include training, recruitment and selection, work motivation, and leadership.

Long Winded

I had high hopes when I purchased this book for my human resource class. The information given in the book is long and drawn out with no continuity to any of the information given. The history chapter was the only part that I found interesting. The professor even came into class and announced that she would not be teaching from the text.

Kindle version does not have tables/images in book

I generally buy my textbooks via Kindle and have never seen this issue before. Almost all of the images (i.e. tables, figures and graphics) in this book are nothing but gray blocks with the words "picture not available due to copyright infringement". This means that if your instructor has you do a project using any of these tables, you are screwed. I had to buy the book in paperback form, wasting about $175 and I am very upset about this.
