About the Author
Jacob's career in the games industry spans fourteen years, but he has been programming games as an amateur and professional now for a quarter of a century. During this time he has worked on over a dozen published games for all the major console platforms, including as the lead programmer of the cult British game, Hogs of War. He has programmed, designed and project-managed titles for publishers like Gremlin, Infogrames, Atari, Disney and Konami and he truly knows the meaning of the word "crunch".
Somehow he also found time to study a Ph.D. in the psychology of learning and has a passion for most things that connect video games and learning (including a whole lot of research involving zombies: zombiedivision.co.uk). This passion also extends to teaching game development, which he practices in his position as Senior Lecturer in Game Development at Sheffield Hallam University in the UK.

A long awaited and well deserved sequel !
By Alexander Aris
This eagerly awaited sequel was pre-ordered by myself in November 2009 and I am so glad the that time has come around to its now release date. The Game Maker's Companion touches on mostly platform games, but covers a more detailed approach giving an understandable breakdown of each step.

The main Games include : Fishpod, Zool ( Commodore Amiga fame ) and Shadows on the Deck ( fantastic ).

As well as covering Drag and Drop actions, GML ( Game Maker Language ) is covered in more detail throughout, which gives a more direct way of achieving results.

The book also has plenty of diagrams, screenshots and great artwork, which brings each associated page and chapter to life. What is even more special, is a section about story telling and how to apply it into your own games.

My favourite section of the book, is Chapter 14 : Feature Reference. This has great little routines that can be added to your own Games and Projects : 360 Degree Movement / Shooting, Cheat Codes, Countdown Clock, Homing Missiles, Mini-Map, Pausing the Game, Scrolling Text ( Horizontal / Vertical ) and many more. Each routine is in GML, but is straight forward to understand and use. This is one of the great 14 chapters to read and absorb.

An added bonus with the Book, is a CD with all the examples from The Game Maker's Companion, which also includes Game Maker 8 to get you started.

Overall, this is a well deserved follow up to The Game Maker's Apprentice, for which I could possibly see a third book covering even more styles of game design and routines. Perhaps the 3D aspects of Game Maker ?

Great book!
By driskell
This book is all that I wanted, after owning the previous book (Apprentice). It continues with the more advanced features of Game Maker precisely where the other book left off. There is very little rehashing of the material from the previous book and it moves (inevitably) into much more detailed use of GML game maker language. This was expected. It is noticeably thicker than the previous (almost but not quite twice as thick) and contains a reference section at the back of the book in an almost toolbox-like utility for incorporation into your own games. If you bought the first one (and liked it all), don't think, just buy the second. You wont regret it.

Another Game Maker Hit
By Gene. Poschman
I purchased the e book for this title for two reasons, first it was available immediately. When I purchased "The Game Makers Apprentice", I discovered that having the e book had many advantages. I could have the book open on my computer to create the games while learning about game design and development. It allowed me to copy and paste code rather than type it, as I am a miserable typist.

I am happy to say the "The Companion" took over in a sense where "The Apprentice" left off. I learned a fair amount about game design and development from "The Apprentice", but I wanted more in depth information of a specific genre. The platform games is is simple enough to begin with and yet it can be complex enough to allow a learner to evolve into a developer. "The Companion" handled this beautifully.

It uses the same game development instruction style as "The Apprentice" with perhaps a little more in depth explanation. This is not a short coming for "The Apprentice", its primary function was to ace as an introduction into game development and "Game Maker", which it succeeded in doing extremely well.

"The Companion" is broken into 3 sections each of which is dedicated to a specific platform game. As with "The Apprentice" the initial game is simple and is used to get across the basics of the game genre and development for this type of game.

The second section takes a classic game within the genre and adapts it to "Game Maker". It is the second evolutionary step in the complexity of the game genre and game development and design. It also lets the user work with an existing game that he or she may already be familiar with.

The third section introduces integrating story telling within the game development and design. This takes game development into a new level where the player becomes part of a developing story and participates within the story itself. The authors explore in greater detail this integration and provide a detailed road map on how to accomplish this transformation in game development.

Whether you are a novice game developer, or a seasoned professional, whether you intend to use "Game Maker" or some other development engine this book will give you marvelous insight into game development and design that in not just specific to platform games.

Meet Jenny. She's rich, spoiled, rude and obnoxious. She's also just been signed up for the BDSM ride of her life - without her consent. An intensive training course at the Albrecht Stables is not what it appears to be and training to become a human pony was not on Jenny's to-do list. The trouble is, how do you escape when you're tied up, gagged and constantly sexually aroused? Which Master or Mistress do you turn to for rescue? And what do you do if you suspect you might actually be enjoying yourself? This is Jenny's adventure into the world of BDSM and pony play. She's about to find out just how much effort it takes to become a pony girl and that she has no choice but to excel in every aspect of her training or she may never stand a chance of being released from her bondage. Book One features Jenny's abrupt induction, where she finds herself being stripped naked, medically examined and intimately measured for her new uniform - as a pony girl.

About the Author
Christina Mandara was born in the UK, but has spent most of her life travelling the world. She speaks three languages and has been chiefly employed in the fields of finance and travel. Her favourite city is Sydney and her favourite holiday destination is the south of France. She loves keeping fit and enjoys running, cycling and water sports. No, not those kinds of water sports; think surfing or sailing. That doesn't mean that she doesn't enjoy BDSM in all of its glorious forms, be that pony girls, bondage, edge play, orgasm denial or a damn good spanking. Her favourite item in the toy closet (a box simply isn't big enough) is her riding crop. In her spare time she's usually cuddled up with a good book, exploring the countryside or baking in the kitchen. In fact, she loves her kitchen so much she's one of few woman who wouldn't mind being tied to it! Her first and foremost love is writing, however, and more often than not you'll find her on a laptop spinning tales of romance, erotica or dark, paranormal fantasies. Those in the BDSM world might wonder whether Ms Mandara is a top or a bottom. Is she currently training a herd of pony boys or is she stabled up, in full leather tack, with the pony girls? It's a good question. Answers on a postcard please or try and figure it out yourself by visiting Ms Mandara's blog: http://christinamandara.wordpress.com

Under the Saddle
By wrand
Although I am usually cautious in approaching contemporary female writers of erotica, C. P. Mandara hooked me with what appears to be her first erotic book, and the first in a series: "The Riding School--Book One of Pony Tales." Through an engaging protagonist, fascinating supporting characters and a taste for comic irony, Mandara gives us a complete, entertaining and arousing narrative with both a compelling story and some of the hottest sex I have had the pleasure of reading.

Mandara's protagonist Jenny is a spoiled little rich girl whom I like. She is lazy, irresponsible and enjoys her father's wealth, but she is also quite charming. I just could not find it in myself to blame her. Jenny needs to learn something of life, of course, and, for some mysterious reason yet to be divulged, her father has chosen the Pony Rides Hotel as the avenue of her education, a place that, from the outside, Jenny sees as "ridiculously old-fashioned." This bit of irony, along with Jenny's reactions to coming events, suggests a rounded character, who surprises the reader as well as herself.

Jenny is not the only surprising character, however. On the other side of the symbolic black door, we find two old ladies chatting where I expected to see a leather clad dominatrix. As the story develops, these two endearing old ladies--each unique in character--add both comic relief and hot, sexual shocks to the tale. I laughed out loud when Agnes, one of the two, says: "We have a bolter, . . . Better batten down the hatches."

The tale of Jenny's kinky, erotic initiation develops with a skilled use of suspense and description, in addition to the engaging introduction and development of the characters. Mandara's story shows little resemblance to many erotic stories I have read that have seemed to use story narration and description as little more than links between sex scenes. I found myself in anticipation of the first erotic scene, but I had no desire to jump to it. I wanted just as much to find out what was going to happen to Jenny next and how she would try to handle the situation. During the course of the narrative, suspense rises as well as the hormones, and Mandara uses description well to enhance the effect.

The author is very good at prioritizing description: using relative amounts of details to show the importance of people and things as well as to draw out the suspense. Mandara shows people and places well, and she does it from Jenny's perspective, a technique that adds to character development as well as to suspense. For example, Mandara's description of the "Tack Room" shows Jenny's rising apprehension, and it also produces a sort of "Twilight Zone" atmosphere, which contributes something new and interesting to the coming eroticism.

The real fun starts with the chapter titled, "The Exam, Part I," and with the "freebie" (You have to read the story to find out what that is.). Great description and character development continue, along with hot, graphic sex, when, her clothing cut completely away, Jenny, bound and helpless, is at first more concerned about the price of her ruined designer jeans and "one of a kind" sweater" than about the sexual events that must be coming--front and rear.

Without giving anything more away, suffice it to say that Mandara has a talent for using contrasts in pleasure, pain, desire, indignation and plain shock to produce sex scenes hot enough to arouse men and women, reading alone or in couples. The ending left me waiting anxiously for the next installment: "Book Two of Pony Tales--Learning the Ropes." I highly recommend C. P. Mandara's erotic novel, both for the story and the sex. The first book in the series is not enough, however. I have to find out if Jenny can earn her tail.

Super hot!
By starfire
While I consider myself a pretty well-versed kinkster, pony-play has never been one of the fetishes I was personally into. However, this book has so many other things that I find titillating (humiliation, bondage, medical play, anal play) that I am thrilled I took a chance and read it. Jenny demonstrates herself to be one very spoiled brat from the first paragraph so it's easy to enjoy her finally being punished for it. My favorite part is how much SHE enjoyed the horrible things that happened to her too. Being mean to someone is easy; being mean to someone and making them enjoy it is far more difficult - and far more humiliating for the victim.

Ms. Moran has created a score of interesting characters. Even the receptionist that appears for 5 paragraphs has her own personality; and the two ladies in the tack room while both good at their jobs are both unique characters with their own hopes and dreams. I genuinely want to spend more time getting to know each person mentioned in this tale and hope they all make reappearances as the series goes on. I can't wait for the next one! In fact, my only "complaint" is that this story left me frustrated that I couldn't read more right away!

Loved it!

Red Riding School is a short sexy little story that leaves on the edge of your seat, literally. It wasn't what I expected and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The story content was definitely new to me but entertaining nonetheless. I can't wait to read the next one in the series.

An Introduction to the International Criminal Court, by William A. Schabas

The International Criminal Court has ushered in a new era in the protection of human rights. Protecting against genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes, the Court acts when national justice systems are unwilling or unable to do so. Written by the leading expert in the field, the fourth edition of this seminal text considers the Court in action: its initial rulings, cases it has prosecuted and cases where it has decided not to proceed, such as Iraq. It also examines the results of the Review Conference, by which the crime of aggression was added to the jurisdiction of the Court and addresses the political context, such as the warming of the United States to the Court and the increasing recognition of the inevitability of the institution.

Review
"This volume is the most comprehensive study of the rapidly evolving International Criminal Court (ICC) providing a probing analysis of such topics as jurisdiction, operations and the procedural regime of the court. This book begins with a superb historical sketch on the path of international criminal law: its fundamental concepts, history, and significance."

Ignore Bush, Read This Book
By A Customer
Schabas succeeds fully in introducing the reader to the main features of the new International Criminal Court (ICC). His book is a model of legal exposition. He writes clearly, situates the ICC within the history of international law, relates the substantive law of the ICC to the jurisprudence of the Yugoslavia and Rwanda tribunals, and has interesting comments on the negotiating history that led to the ICC. After finishing Schabas' book, I was struck most of all by the care and thought that went into the design of the ICC, which conforms to the main lines of international law as the law has developed since 1945. The ICC is the world's best hope for bringing war criminals, human rights violators, and genocidalists to justice. It is a disgrace that the U.S. has tried to smother it in the cradle. Very helpful
By Dr. Lee D. Carlson
For this reviewer, who is definitely not a legal expert, this book was read with the goal of understanding to what extent pre-emptive wars can be viewed as `legal', to discover the reasons why the United States chose to withdraw its participation in the International Criminal Court, and to gain basic knowledge on the tenets and origins of international law in order to find out if indeed the current conflict in Iraq could be viewed as a `war crime' or some other severe violation of international law. Before reading this book, this reviewer was very unknowledgeable about legal concepts and reasoning in the context of international law, and had the opinion that international legal agreements were very fragile and tenuous. This view did not really change after reading the book, but its perusal did offer a few surprises and was thought provoking to a large degree. Like most legal treatises, this book suffers from the typical `tyranny of the footnote' that accompanies legal or history books. This minor annoyance that causes the flow of the reading to be disrupted is perhaps compensated by the need for the reader to know that the sources are available and that they can be checked if necessary.

Readers who are not legal experts will no doubt think of the Nuremberg trials as being the best representative of what an international court can accomplish given the jurisdiction. Their biases in this regard are in fact true as is brought out many times in the book, particularly in the discussion on genocide and `crimes against humanity', which the Nuremberg trails were set up to deal with after the second world war. The word `genocide' apparently originated with Raphael Lewkin in 1944. Lewkin wanted to make sure that crimes against groups were prosecuted. It was later adopted in 1946 by the Nuremberg prosecutors and declared an `international crime' by the General Assembly of the United Nations. Genocide was to be distinguished from `crimes against humanity' since the latter was only to hold in the context of an international armed conflict. The author argues that the distinction is not really significant today, with `crimes against humanity' now referring to atrocities committed in wartime and in peacetime. However, genocide is to be distinguished from `crimes against humanity' and `war crimes' in that it must be committed with the `intent' of destroying a national, ethnic, racial, or religious group. It is this `special intent' the author argues, that makes genocide different from the other two crimes.

According to the author, the designation of an activity as a `war crime' began with the 1907 Hague Convention IV and was refined in the 1919 Commission on Responsibilities. From then on says the author, "there is little argument about the existence of war crimes under international law." The Nuremberg charter listed as a war crime the murder or ill treatment of prisoners of war, the killing of hostages, the wanton destruction of cities, villages, or towns, and devastation not justified by military necessity, among other activities. In reference to this, it would seem that the war in Iraq should be labeled as a war crime given that some of the activities to date in this war do satisfy these criteria. In addition, the fire bombing of Tokyo and Dresden, and the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki could be classified as war crimes according to the Nuremberg charter.

Of all the characteristics of the International Criminal Court, its jurisdiction is the most problematic. Its creators were very ambitious in their goals, for it was to have the most general scope and application of any international body to date. The author emphasizes that its creation rests on the voluntary participation of countries that decide to be subject to its jurisdiction. The ICC though has a narrower jurisdiction than the individual countries that participate in it. The drafters were careful to grant the individual countries the first crack at the prosecution of certain crimes. If the domestic justice system is `unwilling' or `unable' to prosecute then the ICC can take over. The author refers to this as `admissibility' in the book, which is to be distinguished from jurisdiction. Jurisdiction refers to the `situation' in which a crime has been committed, whereas `admissibility' refers to the proper identification of a `case' that can be taken up by the ICC. The jurisdiction of the ICC though can be prevented by the UN Security Council, this being called `deferral' by the author, and was put in so that the ICC would not be able to act effectively as no veto on issues brought to the Security Council.

When reading the book one is struck by the extreme fragility of international law and the difficulties needed to enforce it. The author describes the statutes of the Nuremberg, Tokyo, Yugoslavia, and Rwanda tribunals as being "very thin" when viewed in the context of criminal law. These tribunals allowed the judges much discretion, but the ICC under the Rome statute attempted to limit judicial discretion to a very large degree. The ICC was to draw on many sources of legal doctrine in order to define the general principles upon which it was to operate. As examples, the author quotes Romano-Germanic and Sharia forms of penal justice, reflecting of course the international character of the ICC, and the diversity of the states that elect to be under its jurisdiction.

In the opinion of this reviewer, the best feature of the International Criminal Court is its insistence on trying and punishing individuals, and not states, or other "abstract entities" like corporations (although corporate liability was debated considerably by the delegates according to the author). Commanders who order their subordinates to carry out war crimes or do not act to prevent them are particularly culpable. Without such an international legal body, disputes or grievances between states will be settled by the use of military power. The victor will have no one to answer to, regardless of the heinous acts it committed to win.

Third edition much more detailed than the first
By J. Nussbau
I have the first edition of this book (2001) and I would like to point out that the bulk of it consists of three appendices: the Rome Statute, Elements of Crimes and Rules of Procedure and Evidence. These three documents are public information and make up over half the book (218 pp.). The original content of the book is only 164 pp. which would be a much smaller book on its own. Of course the content is of good quality. Looking at the table of contents of the third edition, it seems the original content has really expanded with the development of the court. So make sure you get the edition that you order on amazon!
