About the Author
Joey Yap is the founder of the Mastery Academy of Chinese Metaphysics, a global organisation devoted to the teaching of Feng Shui, BaZi, Qi Men Dun Jia, Mian Xiang and other Chinese Metaphysics subjects. He is also the Chief Consultant of Joey Yap Consulting Group, an international consulting firm specialising in Feng Shui and Chinese Astrology services.

Joey Yap first began learning Chinese Metaphysics from masters in the field when he was fifteen. Despite having graduated with a Commerce degree in Accounting, Joey never became an accountant. Instead, he began to give seminars, talks and professional Chinese Metaphysic consultations around the world, and has become an avid property investor who also holds an interest in diverse businesses. By the age of twenty-six, he became a self-made millionaire. In 2008, he was listed in The Malaysian Tatler as the Top 300 Most Influential People in Malaysia and Prestige s Top 40 Under 40. In 2013, in recognition of his work and contribution to the industry, society and country, he received the Darjah Indera Mahkota Pahang (DIMP), a prestigious award which carries the official title of Dato .

Good idea that misses the mark

On the positive side: Great title that gives specific information to intended audience. Attractive cover. Activities are preceded by skills, time, level, materials required--all reader-friendly things.

On the negative side: Although there is a table of contents, the book has NO PAGE NUMBERS! This is not reader-friendly at all! To go to the trouble of creating a nice-looking book with useful information, it would have made sense to fix these small--BUT VERY IMPORTANT--details. This book needs professional editing--not only for formatting but for concision.

I am disappointed to find that more and more people with good information to share are putting out inferior products.

I've only glanced through this book so far, which is actually quite difficult because there are NO PAGE NUMBERS printed on the pages. There are some excellent sections and ideas, but they are hard to find! It's rather frustrating. The table of contents is off too - if you have the patience to count the pages towards the spot you're looking for. Ooopsies?

Save your money, these activities are available online for FREE!!

Is this book really needed? Lots of good activities, some of them have been around since the ark, but that doesn't matter if they work. My main problem with this book is that all of the activities can be found for free on the web, why waste money buying this book which has several pages of filler at the start? I don't believe people should make money from sharing educational best practices, it might have been better for the writer to offer this as a free PDF on her website and accepted donations, instead of selling ideas that are available for free online.

I loved the book but was disappointed that the pictures were not in color.
The descriptions were ease to understand. A bonus were the driving tours in the back.
Another bonus are the GPS coordinates. I have already recommended this book to other cover bridge enthusiasts.

A Great Player Needs a Better Book

Ukrainian GM Ivanchuk is approaching the end of 25 years as an elite GM. He joins Keres & Rubinstein as a frequent world #2 player, who never got to play for title. In his early 20's, he broke the Karpov/Kasparov domination at Linares in 1991. The book-index lists 58 GM tournament first prizes. His positional style is near perfect, full of creative ideas; he presents deep & beautiful plans and astonishing attacks/combinations. Ivanchuk plays almost every opening (there are 21 different openings represented in this book, often introducing important novelties). Along with his age-peers (Anand, Kamsky, Adams, Gelfand, Shirov ..) Ivanchuk's play is part of the current standard of deeply researched openings, aggressive no-holds barred middle games with razor sharp endgame play. Four of the these peers have already produced high quality game collections with outstanding notes.

I was excited to finally see this book. New In Chess has produced: a well bound & nicely printed text, with adequate indexes, great cover photos, and 2"x2" head photos scattered in the text. The selected games are terrific. On the rare occassions I have seen Ivanchuk notes they have been brillant, but he is infrequent in publishing analysis. Although he can often be viewed on-line at event post-game interviews, which are a real treat. The opponents are cream of the GM world. The first 30 games cover late 1980's to 2000, with the remaining 70 games 2000-2012. The notes are pretty good, about 2-3 pages per game. Kalinichenko has used his database to provide plenty of opening references to other games. Occassionally he makes a clinker remark like informing the reader that the Ruy Open variation is an alterantive to the main line (duh?!). The writer sticks to established ideas on his judgement calls on opening lines. The book has a 12-page bio based on research of primarily Russian/Ukrainian sources -- it's content is unremarkable for anyone who has been reading New in Chess or internet sources. Kalinichenko does not seem to have had direct input from Ivanchuk in writing this book. The Bio includes an odd 'secondhand interview' of the writer asking questions about Ivanchuk & then the answers come from other published sources. Ivanchuk's personality does not really shine through, nothing new is revealed, with only the brief comment on Ivanchuk's well-known mental stresses.

The games are presented with little competitive context or competive color. There is limited comment on strategic issues. Plentiful offering of variation calculations, which seem accurate & computer checked. The endgame coverage lacks depth. Kalinichenko is a correspondence GM & an experienced chess-writer. Yet I feel the middle game notes do not fully unpick or delve into the thinking of this combinational genius or explain subtle play fully. Nor does he address how Ivanchuk can rachet up the tightness in complex positions and make his pieces dance. There is immense beauty in Ivanchuk's playing style. ---So for a reasonable price, I got a collection of wonderful games in a nice looking book with very good, but not great notes.

A collection of 104 gems that need a little more polishing

In 1989, 20 year old Ukrainian grandmaster Vassily Ivanchuk astonished the world by winning the Linares super-tournament. Two years later, he defeated both Karpov and Kasparov while winning the tournament for the second time. Remarkable results at such a tender age! Surely we were seeing the advent of the next world champion ... but life is not quite so simple. At key moments, right when he has seemed poised to ascend the chess Olympus, Chuky has lost his footing and fallen over a metaphorical ledge. Author and correspondence GM Nikolay Kalinichenko introduces his subject with a light biography that chronicles some of his most exhilarating victories and excruciating stumbles. For example, he shows Chuky cruising to victory in game 5 of his 2002 world championship match against Ponomariov--when suddenly, on move 47, he loses the thread. With 2 horrendous blunders he squanders the victory, then loses the game. In the short match he cannot recover, and his best opportunity to win the world championship vanishes.

If from the competitive perspective Chuky has been an enigma, though, Kalinichenko helps us see that from the artistic perspective Chuky's career has been a major triumph. In 104 annotated games he shows Chuky launching brilliancy after brilliancy to defeat the world's strongest players. He sacrifices a pawn against Kasparov (Linares, 1991) to plant his knight on a beautiful outpost. He gives up his queen against Shirov (Wijk aan Zee, 1996), but his minor pieces dominate. He sacs a knight on f5 at the 1985 World Junior Championship, then gives a clinic on exploiting the weakened dark squares around Mishra's king. Against Smeets (Tata Steel, 2010) he tosses a pawn to activate his dark-squared bishop, then eschews material gain in favor of an irresistible mating attack. And so forth. Every one of these games is not only beautiful, but worthy of study.

Kalinichenko's annotations are quite capable, highlighting the critical decisions, the bright ideas, and the lost opportunities for both sides. However, he often seems to be adorning Rybka evaluations with a few words, rather than weighing and explaining the dynamic factors. For example, Chuky's victory over Kasparov in Linares (1991) seems counter-intuitive; Kasparov had the 2 bishops in a reasonably open position, yet he never really got into the game. How did Chuky manage to win? Kalinichenko offers plenty of variations ending in evaluations of "white is better" or "black can hold," but he never goes deeper. He could have mentioned Chuky's space advantage, or even more important his durable initiative, which required prophylaxis at key junctures, but he gives no such explanation. Analyzing Ivanchuk - Mishra 1985, Kalinichenko briefly mentions that 22....g6 "seriously weakens the dark squares," but he says nothing about Chuky's instructive exploitation of the weakness. If Kalinichenko had provided more detail about the dark-square attack, rather than settling for phrases like "with decisive advantage to white," he could have made this game an instructional classic.

Even if this book does not realize its full potential, it nevertheless, like Ivanchuk's career, is an artistic triumph. I have greatly enjoyed studying Chuky's games; how can you not enjoy these classics? Recommended for players rated 1700 and up.

One In A Million Giftedness

Amazing games from a genius whose penchant for emotional highs and lows has detracted from his playing. Ivanchuk is perhaps like Rubinstein, Keres, Bronstein, and Leko -- incredibly strong grandmasters who never quite reached the pinnacle of chess by winning the world championship. His playing is nonetheless reminiscent of Rudolf Spielmann, Mikhail Tal and Rashid Nezhmetdinov; brilliant, imaginative, combative, and magical. A longer biography might have improved the book, but the games speak volumes about his inspired playing.

The methods presented include shortcuts and conveniences not included in the initial publications and the techniques are described in a context that allows comparisons to other related methodologies. Methodologies are laid out in a manner that stresses their general applicability and reports their potential limitations. This volume provides a substantial and current overview of the extant methodology in the field and a view of its rapid development.

About the Author
P. Michael Conn is the Senior Vice President for Research and Associate Provost, Texas Tech Health Sciences Center. He is The Robert C. Kimbrough, Professor of Internal Medicine and Cell Biology/Biochemistry. He was previously Director of Research Advocacy and Professor of Physiology and Pharmacology, Cell Biology and Development and Obstetrics and Gynecology at Oregon Health and Science University and Senior Scientist of the Oregon National Primate Research Center (ONPRC). He served for twelve years as Special Assistant to the President and Associate Director of the ONPRC. After receiving a B.S. degree and teaching certification from the University of Michigan (1971), a M.S. from North Carolina State University (1973), and a Ph.D. degree from Baylor College of Medicine (1976), Conn did a fellowship at the NIH, then joined the faculty in the Department of Pharmacology, Duke University Medical Center where he was promoted to Associate Professor in 1982. In 1984, he became Professor and Head of Pharmacology at the University of Iowa College of Medicine, a position he held for eleven years. Conn is known for his research in the area of the cellular and molecular basis of action of gonadotropin releasing hormone action in the pituitary and therapeutic approaches that restore misfolded proteins to function. His work has led to drugs that have benefitted humans and animals. Most recently, he has identified a new class of drugs, pharmacoperones, which act by regulating the intracellular trafficking of receptors, enzymes and ion channels. He has authored or co-authored over 350 publications in this area and written or edited over 200 books, including texts in neurosciences, molecular biology and endocrinology. Conn has served as the editor of many professional journals and book series (Endocrinology, Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, Endocrine, Methods, Progress in Molecular Biology and Translational Science and Contemporary Endocrinology). Conn served on the National Board of Medical Examiners, including two years as chairman of the reproduction and endocrinology committee. The work of his laboratory has been recognized with a MERIT award from the NIH, the J.J. Abel Award of the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics, the Weitzman, Oppenheimer and Ingbar Awards of the Endocrine Society, the National Science Medal of Mexico (the Miguel Aleman Prize) and the Stevenson Award of Canada. He is the recipient of the Oregon State Award for Discovery, the Media Award of the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology and was named a distinguished Alumnus of Baylor College of Medicine in 2012. Conn is a previous member of Council for the American Society for Cell Biology and the Endocrine Society and is a prior President of the Endocrine Society, during which time he founded the Hormone Foundation and worked with political leadership to heighten the public’s awareness of diabetes. Conn’s students and fellows have gone on to become leaders in industry and academia. He is an elected member of the Mexican Institute of Medicine and a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He is the co-author of The Animal Research War (2008) and many articles for the public and academic community on the value of animal research and the dangers posed by animal extremism. His op/eds have appeared in The Washington Post, The LA Times, The Wall Street Journal, the Des Moines Register, and elsewhere. Conn consults with organizations that are influenced by animal extremism and with universities and companies facing challenges from these groups.

About the Author
Masaya Yamaguchi is not only a musician but also a conceptualist who established his own system to explore the imaginative formation of musical scales by The Complete Thesaurus of Musical Scales, which is a meta-contribution to music pedagogy of a high standard. Jazz Education Journal wrote, "Its worth mentioning that this book comprehensively covers all theoretical possibilities in constructing scales July-August 2002." The concept is revealed in many of his writings and compositions. Because of the reference value of his outstanding achievements, Marquis Whos Who has selected his biographical profile for inclusion in Whos Who in America, Whos Who in the World and Who's Who of Emerging Leaders.

Amazing New Source of Patterns for Jazz

The three books in "Thesaurus" series by Masaya Yamaguchi are absolutely great........ This amazing "Lexicon of Geometric Patterns for Jazz Improvisation " is a welcome addition to the music pedagogy and it will work for all the "genre busters" musicians. Part II of this book covers Coltrane's geometric patterns, Olivier Messiaen's modes, Uncommon non-diatonic scales and so on. Armed with these, you are now well equipped to explore your unique creative process. This "Lexicon" book is full of the well-researched materials and it will let you create and use your own patterns for jazz improvisation. This new book is awesome!

Amazing!!!!!

The use of this lexicon is even more amazing than I first thought. Topics covered include a comprehensive geometric analysis and information on Coltrane's geometric patterns in 1957-58. On p.131, the author shows startling evidence of 1256 geometric patterns moving on Major 3rd cycles (prior to the Giant Steps recording year, 1959).

I found this book to be full of great ideas to create my own geometric patterns. When you feel Slonimsky's Thesaurus is old and unusable, this is the book for you. I would say that this lexicon is the most recent and complete edition of author's symmetrical scales book.

Chapter VI "Messiaen Modes for Jazz Improvisation"

Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992) was a French composer who used the Indian rhythms, birds chirping, and symmetrical scales (i.e. "Modes of Limited Transposition").

In Chapter VI "Messiaen Modes for Jazz Improvisation," the author explains how to create the "geometric" patterns within the respective modes. It may yield some unpredictable results, but if we approach it the right way, it could bring some of the most amazing work of our musical life. This is an authentic and carefully written guide book, which digs deep into the geometry of music.

Definitive but boring

I bought this book because it was recommended by the University of Maastricht (Netherlands) as a textbook to study for the entrance exam that must be passed for non-lawyers to take their Master's course in European Law. I also recently saw it as part of the library of the Munich Intellectual Property Law institute - a program I am also considering.

This book provides definitive coverage of European law and some community institutions. The index, table of cases and acronym definitions are thorough. The history of the European Union and European institutions is laid out and important paragraphs from numerous European Court decisions are quoted and their implications are analyzed.

It is also incredibly boring to read. No author can save the mind-numbing decisions of the European Court. The convoluted and nearly impenetrable language is almost beyond mortal understanding. However, the analysis is also very dry - and while the cause of objectivity is a noble one, an occasional subjective opinion can make a book far more readable. The authors also occasionally refer to cases before explaining them - giving the impression that the book was, at least partially, compiled from previously written articles. This is a bit irritating - particularly in a 3rd edition, you would think that sort of thing would have been filtered out in the previous two versions.

Despite its flaws, this book is useful as a reference and has value for anyone making a serious study of European Law. I would not recommend trying to read it cover-to-cover. How about taking a stand in the next edition? Spice things up a little. In Hartley's, European Union Law in a Global Context, the author makes his point of view known throughout the book, and while the reader may not always agree - it makes the material ever so much more interesting. It would be nice to see something similar from Craig and De Burca, particularly since this book appears to be considered definitive by at least 2 European academic institutions.

finally you will know what to say when she acts all wierd

as a man I deal with other men by punching them in the arm and calling them a derogative name. This does not work with my girlfriend. When she feels lost and sad, telling her to suck it up and stop being such a wuss just makes her cry harder. This book tells men in very clear terms what is going on in your girlfriends head. It is worth the price and written from a womens point of view with real life senariors. I wish I had this book two years ago when I got divorced and started dating again. It would have made the process a lot more transparent. I also used the tips in this book just last night to calm my girlfriends nerves and talk her off the ledge. Women aren't crazy they just have different needs than men do. If you want to be around women you need to know what they need from you. So suck it up and read this book you idiot.

A practical, yet easy read for a guy...

Simple advice to keep the relationship running smoothly. The book doesn't say "It's all YOUR fault!" to the guy, but rather, offers sensible, preemptive advice to keep the crazy out of the relationship. A must read for any guy that doesn't want the relationship to end on a bad note or that doesn't want to believe all women are nuts!

talk about a book that soooo many guys need to read!

I had such a fun time reading through this, and thinking about a few guys I know in particular who stand to benefit from it. I think a lot of ladies feel the same way, and will probably get this book for guys who are in need of it. It's clear from the numerous examples given that many of the things so obvious to women as to expected standards of behavior aren't very clear to men. This book helps men 'get it' in an instructional, yet conversational tone. Ladies, you'll no doubt be able to relate to so many of the stories in here, and guys, well, you'll relate to the stories (because no doubt you've done things that are not good boyfriend material) but in a whole new way. You will now understand better than you ever have exactly how to change behaviors so that your lady feels secure and happy, and this should make you feel secure and happy as well. I like that there are stories about exactly what TO do to be a good boyfriend and what NOT to do. Way to go, Rebecca Marquis. This book will help to save countless relationships from going downhill!
