I am a big fan of Margaret Wise Brown. She writes beautifully and collaborates with wonderful artists. This book in particular has wonderful art. "Dreamy" to look at. I highly recommend.

This book is great for calming down at night. It is a little repetitive with very smooth colored pictures that my daughter loves. She counts the animals on each page.

This was the cookbook that my mother had when I was growing up. To be able to find it, and in really decent condition, has been a joy to me. I'll be adding some of these old recipes to my meals in the coming months.

BEST COOKBOOK EVER!

I grew up with this cookbook. In our house, any time we needed a recipe or information about the way to cook something we always reached for the "blue cookbook" I was only without it when I married and moved out. That was before computers and it took me a long time to find another copy from any publication date. Recently my son became engaged and his fiance comes from the typical home where the microwave is the first best way to cook. She told me she wants to learn to cook and has complimented me on many meals and desserts that I still prepare using this cookbook. Every Thanksgiving she asks me to make "my" pumpkin pie (page 604). It is still the best recipe and has alternative spices to use in place of "pumpkin pie spice". I am planing to give her a copy as soon as I can get one to replace mine. I wanted the Victory Binding as that is what my mother's is. She got it as a "free" gift with the purchase of an aluminum pan set just after her marriage in 1941. I now have it but it is so well loved and used that it is close to disintegrating .I am so glad to find it here.

A cookbook for the ages!

This book is what I was looking for. Not only is it entertaining to read, it is filled with thousands of super simple recipes! It's uses the basic foods that were around during WWII.
It covers everything from cooking/skinning possum to the correct wines to be served with each meal. The dessert section has every pie recipe imaginable! Personally I think they should reprint this book again!

Woooo this story had me all in my feelings. The cliff hanger got me wanting more. Had a chill run down my spune at one point. The things that happened in this book are so unexpected. I so want Zo and Kaylen together but thw have an unexpected guest, Alexis and Marc all I can say is WOW. What the heck noooo Jazmyn.

Really not a lot to say just that this author can freaking write!! My heart was racing had to stop reading couple times was so intense!! All I got to say is if you haven't read 3queens 1 n 2 what are you waiting for?? Porscha Sterling is one of the best female writers I have ever read!!

3 Queens 2 picked up exactly where part 1 left off. And from the first page to the last, you will be held hostage in the world of Jazmyne, Alexis and Kaylen. 3Q2 was definitely not short on drama, mystery, suspense or jaw dropping moments. You will experience every emotion that each female is experiencing and will have you feeling as if you were transplanted into each of their lives.

We see a definite change in Alexis after her tragic moment from the last book. You will see her change into a person that you couldn't have imagined her to be. And along with her change, you'll see a different side of Marc that'll take you by surprise and definitely leave you with your jaw on the ground. Thing is.......is this a good change or a bad change....depending on how you look at the situation, it could be either...or even both. There is definitely a new dynamic to their marriage and one that will leave you intrigued by this couple; Kaylen is carrying on life as the 'only' female in Caleb's life....but will she ever be 'the only' one? She constantly finds herself asking this question. And when unforeseen situations occur, she'll be faced with one of the toughest decisions; Jazmyn is working hard to keep her secret under wraps and this task is proving to be harder than she bargained for. She does everything in her power to keep Kingston from finding out the truth about what really happened to his wife Shanice......but is this enough?

The answers to all of these questions and more lies in 3Q2 and you will NOT be disappointed. Not to mention the twists/turns of this book that will leave your head spinning. The last 3 chapters are explosive and will have you feeling as if you just watched a movie.Porchsa's writing reflects that of a verteran and will leave you wanting more. I can't wait for the next installment to see how all this plays.

Like the mythical city of El Dorado, the very real Timbuktu held the promise of wealth and fame. Whoever got there first was guaranteed worldwide renown. Timbuktu is in the center of Mali on the southern edge of the Sahara. In the first two decades of the nineteenth century, it held the promise of wealth and fame for the first explorer to make it there and back alive. As Kryza sees it, Timbuktu assumed the quality of a mythic dream, a city paved in gold. He chronicles the 2,000-mile journey of Major Alexander Gordon Laing, an army officer with the Royal Africa Corps, in 1825. The trip across the Sahara from Tripoli to Timbuktu took more than a year, Laing's caravan facing suffocating heat and foul-smelling food. Distances were measured in days, never in miles, and at night he and his men wrapped themselves in blankets and slept on the sand. Laing was the first European to visit Timbuktu and was received by its governor in a small mud house, and Kryza himself spent 11 years in Africa traveling much of this route. His narration of Laing's perilous journey is electrifying. George Cohen

Fun read but

The Race For Timbuktu is a fun and interesting read. It does a good job of covering the voyages of Alexander Laing and those who proceeded him. The writing is generally good and the story well told.

In short, Timbuktu was a legendary city of gold and wealth in the middle of Africa. A sort of Shangri-La that really existed, even if not in the wealth imagined. Given the importance of Africa to the European powers at the start of the 19th century, France and England raced to find the fabled city and the source of the Niger River. The book focuses on England's explorers such as Denham, Chapperton and Oudney. Followed by a solid biography of Alexander Laing, who eventually discovered Timbuktu. In the process a good glimpse of European affairs in the Sahara is provided.

So why only three stars? First this book needs maps-- desperately. I am amazed how many books I have read lately lack them. How hard is it for a publisher to get a map, draw the routes taken by multiple explorers on them and publish them in the book? Somehow it seems obvious and yet where are they? Second some pictures might be nice so one can see, or glimpse the regions described. Third, the author often repeats himself. How many times do we need to know Emma Warrington took unescorted walks with the son of the French Ambassador?

Fourth and most important, the author does little to provide African context for the events. Cities, empires, and rulers appear in the narrative, but little is said about them. This especially hurts when a people, the Taureg tribe, appear over and over with very little context. I recommend reading this book with one's internet link to Wikipedia or Encylcopedia Britannica open to answer obvious questions.

One last little thing, on P. 149 the author refers to Herodotus documenting a Roman garrison. Herodotus pre-dates roman times by a few centuries and did not write on Rome but on Greece and Persia. He also places a city in the Sudan which is clearly in Nigeria. Other mistakes may be present.

Nice overall book, very easy to read. It skips around a bit in the book. Towards the end it was hard to put down.

Great Read

If you enjoyed Rice's Sir Richard Burton, you will enjoy this book. It a fun read for a airplane ride. Kryza weaves an excellent tale in the search for the mythical city. You feel the stress and challenges of the early 19th century African explorers and marvel that the human body could accomplish the feat of these individuals under those circumstance. It is worth the price because it takes you back in time to a period where individual performance is truly measured.
