About the Author
Herbert McCabe was a Dominican Friar and theologian of outstanding originality who died in 2001. He was deeply influential on philosophers such as Anthony Kenny and Alasdair MacIntyre and poets and writers like Terry Eagleton and Seamus Heaney. Brian Davies is Professor of Philosophy at Fordham University, New York, USA. His publications include An Introduction to the Philosophy of Religion (Oxford University Press, 3rd edition, 2003) and The Thought of Thomas Aquinas (Oxford University Press, 1992). Norris-Hulse Professor of Divinity, and Fellow of Peterhouse, Cambridge.

As usual an excellent book by Herbert McCabe

Herbert McCabe was a very deep theologian and philosopher, dead at the beginning of this century. He is a philosoher-theologian, which are the best theologians. (Nowadays, most catholic hteologians seem to be sociologist-theologian. There is no comparison, they are much less deep.) The book is a set of articles (13) by the author, written in different times, but all of them are deep and original (and orthodox). It pays to read it, not necessarily in the order, but according to your preference of the subjects, all of them related to the title of hte book

This book is very detailed. After reading this book a lot of things that are happening in America will make sense and you will begin to understand the big picture. I often wondered why this country was so screwed up and why the banking and financial systems work the way they did including the media. After reading this book it helps me understand what is going on how it got to this point and what the plan is for the future .

If the people only knew of Ambassador Lee Wanta's story -- his loyal work under President Reagan in relation to the Soviet Union; how he was stabbed in the back and put in prison because of the vast sums he accumulated under Title 18, Section 6, Executive Order 12333; how his financial rewards were then stolen by the corrupt Powers That Be in government and the Federal Reserve while he was in jail; and how he wants to keep his promise to President Reagan and use the money he earned for the benefit of the American people and to fix the American economy -- they would stand up and demand his rights to his own money be honored.

absolutely fantastic

I picked up this book expecting a run of the mill self help book for men, and got instead the wizdom of the inner journey of masculinity gathered from the germanic world over the course of hundreds of years. Recommended for all men. My suggestion for follow up read would be joseph campbell - the power of myth.

Strange mix of great and absurd (heavy on the latter)

Reading through this book, I was struck by the polar shifts back and forth between strong and agreeable material, and very odd and outlandish material. It makes for difficult rating; oscillating between 4-5 star content, and 1-2 star.

The book has three focuses. The best part concerns male studies and inner masculine qualities that we've mostly lost and forgotten. The second focus is on mythology and psychology (both of which are used much more than necessary). The third area is poetry. Although he uses "outside" poetry that is fitting, such as from Blake, Bly often uses his own poetry. It seems like he is largely promoting his own poetry. And whereas poetry from others can be seen as supporting material, molding his own poetry to fit what he was arguing for seems like cheating.

Throughout the book, he constantly talks about dysfunctional (or "messed-up") families, and they almost always sound the same, with the father being abusive and destructive. I keep getting the impression that he is talking about his own youth and personal experience. Although this might be fitting of some families, I could never relate to or identify with the typical family he describes, and yet he uses "always" and "all" a lot as though universal. Here is a typical comment of everyone's father: "...we see the father's devouring hunger, his fear of death, his insistence that everyone live in disorder". Hmmm, that doesn't sound like any fathers I know.

There are places where Bly descends into very strange writing. How about this: "Eagles sit on the top branches of the sacred tree, with dead animals underneath the claws. Rotting bits of flesh fall down... where the swine eat them. We are the swine. When all the meat that comes down from above is rotten, then neither the sons nor daughters receive the true meat". LOL Well, thanks for that lovely picture! On pp. 170-171, he goes on and on about people being "copper". I still don't understand what he was trying to say. He also talks a lot about The Great Mother, whoever she is. The weird shifts between modern living and reality, and the far-fetched fantasy stuff from millennia ago, are hard to reckon and tie together, even though they apparently make sense to him (and maybe only him).

Bly seems to be against universities, science, and the church. Mythology, astrology, and even alchemy are apparently more realistic and viable to him. It's ironic and very telling that he even admits (on p. 120 of my copy) that "Mythology is full of stories of the bad father.... There are no good fathers in the major stories of Greek mythology". Now we can see why Bly likes the old mythologies so much. Really, when you put everything together, Bly only puts stock and value in cultures in eras BC. It's as though only them - with their numerous gods and goddesses - mean anything, and everything since then can't be trusted. I'm surprised that other readers are glossing over this important point. It's good to be open-minded, but not so completely that we believe anything that comes along. That's the danger I see in some reviewers.

The book early on pointed to the importance of mentoring, and I started to get an appreciation for that. [As I get older, I can see myself "giving back" and mentoring younger persons]. I thought the book would offer some great tips and suggestions, but sadly, it did not. It only mentioned some vague mentoring in a fantasy setting, and nothing useful or practical. Another missed opportunity for substance and value.

I first thought that this would be a good companion to John Eldredge's wonderful "Wild at Heart", but whereas that is based on real-world living and some Christianity thrown in, this is too heavily-based in fantasy land. The great parts - though few - still warrant at least one read through. Too bad it isn't edited of all the fluff. It'd make a great book in sharply edited form. It can be a hard read getting through the material that Bly values so much and wants to promote just to get to the good tidbits. After reaching about 2/3's of the way through the book, I started finding it difficult to to take much of the material seriously. It was like "Hush Rob with the fantasy stuff; just talk straight to us and say what you want to say".

I agree with another reviewer that the book is way longer than necessary. Ideally, he should have put the down-to-earth discussions and more relevant and sensible mythology into say Volume 1, and left all the extraneous material and far-fetched fantasy as a Volume 2 for readers who want to go to that level.

It's about the transition from childhood to teenhood to adulthood. It explains the rituals of the past, and relates them to the present. Many things are missing in todays youth ... but with the help of reading this book and passing it forward, perhaps that will change the future of our society.

About the Author
One of Iceland’s most celebrated young writers, ANDRI SNÆR MAGNASON is the author poetry, plays, fiction, and non-fiction, and in 2009 he co-directed the documentary Dreamland, which was based on his own book Dreamland: A Self-Help Manual for a Frightened Nation. In 2002 Magnason’s LoveStar was named "Novel of the Year" by Icelandic booksellers and received the DV Literary Award and a nomination for the Icelandic Literary Prize. It was also shortlisted for the 2013 Philip K. Dick Award. His 2012 The Story of the Blue Planet—now published or performed in twenty-six countries—became the first children's book to receive the Icelandic Literary Prize and received the Janusz Korczak Honorary Award and the West Nordic Children's Book Prize. Magnason is the winner of the 2010 Kairos Award. He lives in Reykjavík.

Calculated love with funerals in the skies

I originally read the icelandic version of this book by Magnason, being icelandic and all that, and found it to be brilliant.

Here, a distopic version of the future is put in a humorous context with the love of ones live being a calculated.. say technical fact and every single person being a walking advertisement, voluntarily and sometimes involuntarily if unlucky. The story follows two lovers living in this crazy future that one day are told that they have NOT been "calculated together" - they are not ment to be together - and their true partners are out there waiting for them, sad and lonely. Disbelieved and in love, they do everything they can to fight this calculated fact resulting in humorous scenarios and funerals in the skies..

I recommend this one to all that like the works of Douglas Adams.

I just finished this book yesterday, as a "random pick read" from my local library. I am very fortunate to have stumbled across it. If you enjoy 'science fiction' which is not so much about 'teleporting, laser cannons, and space travel' (i.e., based in 'extreme tech') but rather which takes current issues in society; teases them into a possible future 'what if...' carried to the Nth degree (somewhat absurdly, although how much so remains to be debated in this case) -- then you will love this book. The story reads incredibly well, is engaging, and succeeds at presenting a future which is both utterly horrific and entirely recognizable. It addresses a fairly wide range of themes spanning work and our place in society; society and its place in our lives; love; death; religion; advertising and media; communication and relationships; corporations, growth and 'progress'; and the overlap of all these themes in people and how they live their lives. Even if you don't particularly care for a book which has 'a lot to say' this is an excellent and enjoyable read that can be simply taken for an entertaining and engaging story if that is all you feel like :-)

I think this may be one of my favorite novels! The plot is incredibly clever and incredibly prescient, given that it was originally written close to 15 years ago. Lovestar is all at once funny, heartbreaking, and terrifying. Absolutely a must-read!

This is a review of the Kindle e-book version of this book. It is also advertised as a magazine size paper-back book, which is NOT covered by this review. The type is locked in the original printed size, unlike real Kindle books. This results in an unreadable book. I tried reading it on my MacBook Pro but, even at that size, I still couldn't read it.
Is this an authorized edition? I have never seen the publisher, Kalmbach, do such a poor job.

Although Frary specifically models the Pennsylvania Railroad, his book is a valuable tool for the builder of any model railroad. The Pennsy Middle Division in Ho Scale is a good looking, modern book, and it offers sound techniques, good advice, and the experience of one of the hobby's most reknown craftsmen.

Transformative!

Many years ago -like 1990 or so, I actually went to a workshop with Madanes specifically on this book. My career was heavily loaded with children traumatized by adults, siblings, family members, and I was always looking for cutting edge ideas. So,I have read the book,directly heard the intentions and methods of the author, and used her framework many times as a family therapist. It is a carefully prepared framework designed to create a carefully aimed experience that has brought incredible healing time and time again in my experience. There are many therapy books people can read and easily dismiss or gloss over the true intentions of the author. I experienced her true intentions as deeply thoughtful, loving towards all parties,and allowing true forgiveness and restoration of all the lives involved. Frankly, using this framework has produced some of the most moving transformations and clarity for families I have ever experienced in 30 years of practice. I hope people will learn more about Madanes and this book in particular, as it is one of the most powerful interventions imaginable from one of the worlds greatest.

Pioneering Work

Several years ago I attended a seminar at Boston University's School of Social Work. Cloe Madanes work with young sexual offenders was cutting edge. It not only inspired me professionally but, as an abuse survivor, it touched me. When the mother on the video said that no one had ever apologized to her when she had been abused, I choked back my tears. No one had ever told me they were sorry, either.
I shared my experience with the people closest to me and eventually included it in Not My Making: Bullying, Scapegoating and Misconduct in Churches. I finally got around to reading Madanes book this past week.
Madanes has done pioneering work with young sex offenders. I think she correctly approaches abusive behavior from a moral perspective. It isn't just that sexual offenders cannot control their sexual impulses rather that they don't want to. It is a failure of moral development and conscience. Perpetrators do not empathize with their victims and do not recognize their moral obligations to care for and protect individuals weaker themselves.
I was surprise that Madanes did not appear to recognize the importance of religious faith. She refers to religion as decadent and implied it was a counter force to therapy. Given her own therapeutic approach I had expected her to recognize that religion was the source of her own morality and that without it humankind would devolve into primitive and amoral behavior.
Despite her negative comments about religion Madanes' conceptual framework for family interactions are useful. I will certainly apply it in my own work. The core of the book contains clinical vignettes which are an invaluable reference for psychotherapeutic work.
