The Pripyat Syndrome, by Lyubov Sirota

From the editor’s afterword of Birgitta Ingemanson:

The book is a labor of love, first and foremost by its author, Lyubov Sirota, who as a mother and a professional experienced the tragedy of Pripyat, and as a poet felt—and could describe—its chilling abyss. Lyubov Makarovna’s words recreate not only the physical devastation of the power station itself, the city next to it, and the people’s bodies and minds that became enmeshed in illness and sorrow, but also the authorities’ desperate, unsuccessful balancing act between the need for knowledge and the shameful cover-ups. At the same time, this atmosphere of mismanagement, human errors, and cowardly avoidance of uncomfortable truths is breathtakingly held up to scorn in the completely genuine opposite reaction also shown: Ordinary people—friends, dying patients, some nurses and doctors, even kind strangers—simply decide to support and take care of each other, because their moral stance allows nothing less.
If a medical “Pripyat syndrome” exists, then it was invented by the well-known syndrome of bureaucratic lies. Still, beyond the dying landscape of this story, a vibrant portrait of human warmth opens up: poetry and music that inspire, simple words of solace by one woman or man to another, arms stretched out in trust and love. Lyubov Makarovna’s faithful conviction that “we shall overcome” is age-old and so vital to humanity that it cannot be obliterated. It is stubbornly alive in this story, nourished by joyful sweeps of nature, golden glimpses of human closeness, and the often sharp humor that illuminate many dark moments. This is true among the people close to Irina, and it is true in Life. With grim satire, a brave and proud woman from Vladivostok, Ariadna Belova, called her years of existence in the bleak Kolyma camps her “Kolyma University,” and, after describing their inhumane daily rhythm, startled her audience with the perplexing conclusion that “even there we laughed.” As both Lyubov Makarovna and Ariadna Ilinichna were forced to learn while their and their co-sufferers’ bodies were breaking, it was their relationships with friends amidst terror that sustained them, and irony blended with sharp humor offered medicine for the soul.
From this we can all learn something about the wisdom of survival.

About the Author
Lyubov Makarovna Sirota is a poet, publicist, and playwright, who was born in 1956 in the city of Irtyshesk (Pavlodar oblast) in Kazakhstan. Her childhood and youth were spent in Frunze (today Bishkek), the capital of Kirgizia, where she was a member of the city’s literary association Gornye Zori (“mountain dawns”) and her first poems were published in a Kirgiz periodical. In 1975 Sirota and her parents moved to their ancient homeland, Ukraine, where she graduated from the Faculty of Russian Philology at Dnepropetrovsk State University. She directed the literary associations Poisk (“quest”) in the city of Komsomolsk (Poltava oblast) and, from 1983, “Prometheus” at the Energetik Palace of Culture in Pripyat. After the Chernobyl catastrophe and the evacuation from Pripyat, Sirota has lived in Kiev where she worked as an editor at the Alexander Dovzhenko Film Studio until 1992. The author’s poems, articles, and essays have been published in anthologies, as well as in many journals and newspapers of the former Soviet Union and Ukraine. After her collection of poetry, Nosha (“the burden”), and Rollan Sergienko’s film Porog (“the threshold”) came out, her poems became well-known all over the world. She was the coauthor and a leading character in the film. Sirota’s works have been translated into English, German, Polish, Spanish, Italian, Japanese and other languages. Thanks to Professor Paul Brians, Washington State University, her poems (in English translation by Elisavietta Ritchie and Leonid Levin) have been heard on the U.S. national radio program Terra Infirma, and were published in the following collections: Life on the Line: Selections on Words and Healing; Perspectives from the Past; A Fierce Brightness: Twenty-Five Years of Women’s Poetry; and Perspectives on Modern World History: Chernobyl. Sirota’s poetry has also appeared in Canadian and American journals, including Calyx, Zhinochii Svit, Promin, The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), The New York Quarterly, WISE, The Russell Record Magazine, The Modern Review, and In Our Own Words.

The analysis and sorting of large numbers of cells with a fluorescence-activated cell sorter (FACS) was first achieved some 30 years ago. Since then, this technology has been rapidly developed and is used today in many laboratories.

Flow cytometric analysis of molecular, biochemical, genetic and developmental parameters using cellular fluorescence techniques as well as fluorescence-activated (FACS) or magnetic (MACS) cell sorting technologies provide unique options for molecular and cellular biology. In recent years, these technologies have been considerably advanced.
In this second edition, all chapters have been updated according to the recent improvements and modifications. Further, new protocols have been added, such as on magnetic selection, magnetofluorescent liposomes, the cytometry of secreted products and microbead assays, as well as reporter gene assays for cytometry and cell selection. The recent technical developments allow diagnostic differentiation of cells according to specific gene expression, identification of rare disease-associated cells and isolation of well-defined cells at high purity for cell therapies. In basic research, analysis and isolation of cells according to the correlated expression of up to 10 gene products, expressed within, on or around the cell have become possible.

A book for the beginner and a review for the experienced
By A Customer
This is the first book I purchased for flow cytometry after checking out 3 unsatisfactory books on the same subject from the library. I am a clinician by training and so I needed a book that explains the basic background of the method, PLUS detailed procedures to follow, and explanation on how to alter those procedures to suit one's experiment. This book is written and presented in a way that makes it easy to understand even if one has no prior trianing in flow-cytometry. It does not have so much technical jargon that a newbie would not be able to understand. Everything is clear and well-explained. I have "debugged" some of my current procedures using this book. Chapter 3 (Immunofluroescence: Basic Considerations) is a must-read: the validity of one's results seem to largely depend on factors discussed in this chapter. Included also is a list of internet resouce for cytometry, although some of websites have been outdated. Overall a very nice reference, but as in all lab procedures-related books, one book never covers everything you need to know, so I use this book by Radbruch in conjuction with others.

From Nothing to Zero: Letters from Refugees in Australia's Detention Centres, by Janet Austin, editor

From Nothing to Zero presents edited extracts from letters written by asylum seekers held in Australia's detention centers. These letters provide a rare glimpse into the world of refugees who have fled war and persecution in their own countries. Several of the contributing detainees have been held for more than three years, often with no end to their incarceration in sight.

This compelling book gives voice to people whose thoughts and experiences are only rarely heard.

Hard to finish with dry eyes.
By Amelia
This is a collection put together of letters from refugees in Australian detention centres. For those of you that don't know this - Australia has a policy of taking in only 12,000 refugees a year - this is nothing compared to many other countries. If they arrive here without a visa they are immediately put into a detention centre, in the most harsh, remote places in Australia and kept there until their applications are 'processed' - the process drags on and on and the Australian government is particularly cruel to refugees and has had the UNHCR criticised the processes and procedures used.
This book provides an amazing insight into their world and what it is like for them to be locked up in a detention centre with their rights void.
This is what one refugee has to say:
'This place is not for human being. This is refugee zoo. The government keep me in zoo without crime. Here in the centre not good things to do. Just thinking and thinking. I came here for safe life. But the government put me in prison. They do not want to here my problem. They just want to pass the time. This is no justice. They want to make me crazy. Now I'm crazy. Dead is much better than this zoo.'
The proceeds for this book go towards helping the refugees - for this reason alone I urge people to get this book and see into their world.

Now he treats his legion of fans to Some Remarks, an enthralling collection of essays—Stephenson’s first nonfiction work since his long essay on technology, In the Beginning…Was the Command Line, more than a decade ago—as well as new and previously published short writings both fiction and non.

Some Remarks is a magnificent showcase of a brilliantly inventive mind and talent, as he discourses on everything from Sir Isaac Newton to Star Wars.

From the Back Cover

One of the most talented and creative authors working today, Neal Stephenson is renowned for his exceptional novels—works colossal in vision and mind-boggling in complexity. Exploring and blending a diversity of topics, including technology, economics, history, science, pop culture, and philosophy, his books are the products of a keen and adventurous intellect. Not surprisingly, Stephenson is regularly asked to contribute articles, lectures, and essays to numerous outlets, from major newspapers and cutting-edge magazines to college symposia. This remarkable collection brings together previously published short writings, both fiction and nonfiction, as well as a new essay (and an extremely short story) created specifically for this volume.

Stephenson ponders a wealth of subjects, from movies and politics to David Foster Wallace and the Midwestern College Town; video games to classics-based sci-fi; how geekdom has become cool and how science fiction has become mainstream; the future of publishing and the origins of his novels.

By turns amusing and profound, critical and celebratory, yet always entertaining, Some Remarks offers a fascinating look into the prismatic mind of this extraordinary writer.

About the Author
Neal Stephenson is the author of the bestselling Reamde; Anathem; the three-volume historical epic The Baroque Cycle (Quicksilver, The Confusion, and The System of the World); Cryptonomicon; The Diamond Age; Snow Crash, which was named one of Time magazine’s top one hundred all-time best English-language novels; and Zodiac. He lives in Seattle, Washington.

Huray for fountain pens!
By Dmitry Portnoy
In his quarter-century (by my count) career of professional writing, Neal Stephenson has learned to show off less as his ideas grew stronger, to waste less time as his books grew longer, to write simpler as his plots grew more complex. He knows pearls of wisdom show best against black velvet, rather than, say, set off by Roman sparklers.

If you doubt this, read this book. Here Stephenson includes some great and some less than great essays, which can be sorted by their publication dates. The clarity of expression and complexity of thought of the 21st century Stephenson plainly exceed that of his younger self. Comparing 2010's "Metaphysics in the Royal Society" or 2008's "Gresham College Lecture" to 1994's "Spew" or "In the Kingdom of Mao Bell" is like comparing the full moon to fireworks: the latter are flashy but not very illuminating; the former is what it is.

The fulcrum, the turning point when it all changed, is Stephenson's indispensable "Mother Earth, Mother Board." The first full flowering of Stephenson's mature style, it appeared in "Wired" one year after "The Diamond Age" and three years before "Cryptonomicon." I always felt that it deserved to have been published as its own book. Now it forms the heart of this one, supplemented by pieces that teach as much about writing as about the technologies and subcultures they explore.

By the way, the subject matter of the essays is always important and fascinating, and Stephenson's take is invariably invaluable. He is not just a techno-geek: his social engagement and historical perspective make his work not just commentary but prescription. To read this book is to be educated, entertained, and chastened, reminding one of the Puritans Stephenson both admires and in many ways resembles.

An Enjoyable Collection of Short Stories and Essays
By Neodoering
I didn't realize when I bought this book that in addition to the dozen plus essays, there are several short stories. I don't think of short stories as Neal Stephenson territory, so I was pleased to get them. They turn out to be pretty good stories, too, quite enjoyable and for once not overly long.

The heart of this collection, though, is the essays, which range from a couple of pages long to over a hundred pages, novella-length in its own right. Stephenson covers many subjects here, from introducing other writer's works to metaphysics at the Royal Society, to describing the laying of trans-oceanic telecommunications cable to discussing the state of science fiction today. As one would expect from Stephenson, he writes intelligently and with humor about all these subjects and many more. I never would have thought that an essay on laying telecom cable would be interesting, but I was sucked into this article and read it in a single sitting, over a hundred pages of it.

I really liked the fact that these pieces covered such a broad range of subjects and were of such varied lengths. I didn't know Stephenson could write anything under 300 pages long, so the shorter pieces were a pleasant surprise. Sometimes I wished he would expound more on the shorter bits, such as his discussion of "Anathem", and the interviews with Slashdot and Salon were also pretty interesting and easily could have been longer.

Overall, this is a thoughtful collection that should please and reward you with chuckles and the occasional, "Huh, I didn't know that." I was particularly interested in Stephenson's take on the state of science fiction today, which he brings up in several of these pieces. I wanted to hear him talk more about his own books, though, which doesn't much occur herein, and I could have used a couple more short stories. This book is a strong work that doesn't disappoint, and it should give you a dozen hours of reading enjoyment.

Stephanson as Essayist
By Barry L. Casey
It's fascinating to read Neal Stephanson's nonfiction. Having read a good deal of his fiction--and enjoyed the complete worlds that he creates--it's a treat to read his take on the "real" world. Elements of humor, wisdom learned along the way, and even some of his political and social views become evident in this work. Readers who enjoy his fictional works may be surprised by this side of the author but won't be disappointed.

"Importantly, this book challenges coaches too by giving them permission to break some of the golden rules of coaching. John and Ian show how the FACTS model can help leaders deploy tough coaching skills with the humility that will be necessary to engage and motivate the modern workforce. This is an excellent contribution to the advancement of executive coaching. I hope that others will wake up to this important challenge through reading and re-reading this timely book."Sir John Whitmore PhD, author of Coaching for Performance (from the foreword)

"This is a terrific book that should provoke and challenge coaches to 'up their game' and thus provide more value to individuals and also, vitally, to their organisations. The philosophy, observations, process and tools that John and Ian describe are very consistent with my and my colleagues' approach . Read it and I believe you will improve your coaching" - Graham Alexander - Founder of The Alexander Corporation, originator of the GROW Model, and author of SuperCoaching and Tales from the Top

"This is a real-world, practical, easy to understand approach to a more challenging style of coaching. A style that is needed to help leaders sit back and think of different solutions and new mind sets in a more uncertain business world. For leaders who are driving for higher performance the FACTS model will allow them to adopt a challenging style but one which, crucially, is respectful rather than threatening in its impact" - Tony McCarthy - Group HR Director, ENRC plc

"Not just for the coaches. This book is critical reading for any business leader seeking to take an honest and challenging approach to developing their people, as well as anyone seeking to add robustness and realism to their business relationships." - Scott Sunderman - Managing Director, Healix Group

"This is a book that is at the same time inspiring and transformational. Inspiring because it reinforces the motivational aspects of coaching and transformational because it progresses the discipline in light of today's business environment. I recommend this book to all coaches who wish to challenge conventional coaching techniques." - Julian Wais - Director of Inverstor Relations, Cobham plc

"This new book makes an important contribution to the coaching literature. Blakey and Day challenge all coaches to look at ourselves and how we work to help our clients - both individuals and their organisations. Whilst this might be an uncomfortable experience for us as a profession it is as important that we do it for ourselves as we do with our clients." - Ian Saunders - Associate Fellow, Said Business School, Oxford University

"I have experience of working with both John and Ian and have found their FACTS method of coaching both energises individuals and ensures alignment with company goals. Any coach who truly wants to add value to the bottom line of their clients should take note of the key messages in this book and not be afraid to challenge the established comfortable norms , particularly in these uncertain and increasingly competitive economic times" - Yvonne Spalding, Director, Group Professional Services, SSP Ltd.

"This book makes an important contribution to the evolution of coaching as a profession. The authors pose a provocative challenge to the coaching profession to raise their game to better support and challenge individuals and organisations, in service of the wider environment. The book offers new insight for business leaders and coach practitioners alike and is aligned to the most contemporary leadership literature." - Sue Mortlock - Head of Board Development, NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement

"We believe in challenging you to be the best you can be and this is the first book to endorse that perspective and brilliantly demonstrates how to do it responsibly. Definitely a core text on our coach training programmes." - John Leary-Joyce - CEO Academy of Executive Coaching

"Right on target. This book is so practical it reads like a Haynes manual for a style of coaching and leadership based on real human values rather than abstract processes. Notions such as courageous goal setting, feedback as the 'loving boot', the 'player coach' and the 'R' word (responsibility!) particularly rang true for me. These are powerful ideas consistent with my own belief that leadership takes place on the pitch not on the side-lines. I loved it." - Andrew Gould, CEO UK, Jones Lang LaSalle

"At last a book that challenges much of the often too simplistic, idealistic and over theoretical approach to executive and management coaching. It is written by people who have obviously been there and done it and more importantly thought deeply about it. Their FACTS framework should certainly be tried and tested, not dogmatically, but flexibly and sensitively to the many different situations the organisational executive coach will face in the day-to-day reality of corporate life. I strongly recommend this book as essential reading for every aspiring professional practitioner." -Eric Parsloe - Chairman, OCM & Co-Founder European Coaching & Mentoring Council

"Challenging Coaching is practical, honest, and relevant especially for those coaching within more Performance driven cultures. The authors write in a refreshingly clear and straightforward style. The insightful exercises, in particular, can be used as a self-development tool to help coaches to raise their game further, or alternatively, within coach supervision." - Katherine Tulpa - CEO, Association for Coaching

"A gem of a book achieving the rare mix of challenging conventional concepts whilst offering very practical advice. This is for business leaders, scholars and students who believe in mindfulness, impact and performance. If you want to change the conversations in your business then face the FACTS as the authors suggest." - Brigitte Nicoulaud - Director of MBA Programmes, Aston Business School

"This book is a challenging and worthwhile read. Challenging in that it may upset some of our assumptions about coaching and worthwhile in that it may develop and enlarge our perception and skills. For anyone engaged in the coaching process it also offers a range of contextual knowledge important to the process." - Bill Shedden - Director, Centre for Customised Executive Development, Cranfield School of Management

"A pleasure to read and a book that focuses on how coaches can raise their game in a solid and ethical manner. It adds value to coaches and to organizations and ensures that coaching clients gain the best from their coaching programmes. I can imagine this book being used on many a coaching course."- Gladeana McMahon, Co-Director Centre for Coaching and Chair of Association for Coaching UK.

"In today's challenging economy, organisations have to find an edge that can cut through and delivers results here and now. Having personally experienced the FACTS approach, I know it delivers these outcomes whereas, for me, other 'classic' coaching approaches left a gap. I am now re-reading the book so I can use its philosophy in my own leadership and through my senior team. In challenging the traditional models, I am convinced this book will take coaching to a new place in its evolution." - Chris Gaines, Head of Sales, Yell Goup plc

A Seminal Coaching Book
By Chris Holman
As a professional coach, I value the emphasis that the profession places on learning and continual improvement.

"Challenging Coaching" has stimulated my coaching thinking like few other coaching books.

Two things distinguish this book, in my view. The ideas themselves, and how they are expressed. Although there is a smorgasbord of examples to select from, one of the ideas that most resonated with me was the concept of setting "courageous" goals. This is in contrast to the more familiar framework of a S.M.A.R.T goal. SMART goals are a useful construct to begin organizing the goal-setting exercise. Where SMART goals fall short for me is that the process is not very inspiring. Boring, really. Authors Blakey and Day provide a welcome antidote to pedestrian goal-setting ennui.

Another distinguishing characteristic of this book is their use of many powerful visual metaphors. For example, they compare the support/challenge coaching construct in terms of the acorn and oak in a way that is brilliant in its simplicity.

I hope that I don't sound too over-the-top hyperbolic when I say that "Challenging Coaching" will change my career arc as a coach. It is quite easily, among the top 2-3 best coaching books that I have ever read.

It's coaching, Jim, but not as we know it......
By Amazon Customer
Aimed primarily at executive coaches, but with a vision for all, this is an exciting and original book. It both challenges current coaching models and describes a model of coaching based on challenge itself.
We must face the Facts, declare the authors; a cosy emphasis on `me, me, me' will not do any more in these turbulent times where economies are under threat, businesses must do much more with much less, we are endangering our environment, and global inequalities cry out for recognition and resolution. On the contrary, we must challenge our clients to move much more into the ZOUD - the ZONE Of Uncomfortable Debate - and expect transformative things to happen. We can safely do this, since we are, after all, dealing `with robust and functioning people who can be pushed'. (p38)
They state explicitly how, in a coaching environment, these laudable aims may be effectively pursued. The principles of this wider approach are summed up in the acronym FACTS; Feedback, Accountability, Courageous goals, Tension and Systems thinking. Each principle is explained in detail with references and real examples.
The authors set their model in the context of the development of coaching, and ask the pertinent question, `Do person-centred therapeutic models really provide the level of challenge that will stretch executives to approach situations in new ways, break from old habits, and look at the long- term impact of personal decisions across the whole business?' (p32)
It's a courageous, even audacious book. One moment you are reading comfortably about how to improve the effectiveness of feedback in the business context and then suddenly you are plunged into the Tao Te Ching, the Hero's Journey and - horrors! - spirituality itself. The authors make no apology for this - `For those with a rational mind, this next section will prove challenging.....it is an experiential text, an intuitive explanation of intuitive moments....[it] may chime with religious concepts and beliefs...'(p164)
The book makes an original contribution to the current debate of the status of coaching as an emerging profession, tying it firmly to the concept of service and responsibility. It will appeal not only to executive coaches, but to any coach who is passionate about linking their work with their deepest and best convictions.

New horizons for the business of coaching.
By Peter Benkovic
At last someone says it loudly and confidently. Traditional coaching with the domination of a low challenge/high support approach has limited effect. According to my personal experience, its limitation holds not only for executive coaching, but for life coaching too.
Traditional coaching leads to new views on old problems, promising solutions, great decisions. But well-done is better than well-said. If you agree that the aim of coaching is to change behavior, then the results of low challenge/high support coaching are more well-said than well-done. To change decision into action usually requires a reasonable amount of challenging, sometime even pushing. How to do this without being pushy, to stay a coach not a command and control boss? The book shows it!
FACTS is not a new acronym for another coaching process as is GROW (Sir John Whitmore), CREATE (David Rock or Lauren Butler), ORACLE (Gillian Jones and Ro Gorell), OSKAR (Paul Jackson and Mark McKergow). FACTS stands for the five cornerstones of a more challenging coaching stance: Feedback, Accountability, Courageous goals, Tension, Systems thinking.
The heart of this new concept is a two-by-two low/high challenge and low/high support matrix. For all four combinations the authors offer examples of questions and statements for each stance so the reader can easily understand the principle. The authors state that there is no right or wrong box of the support/challenge matrix. The coach should choose the style according to overall context in which the coachee lives and works in. That means that coaching should be situational, too. Many coaches (included myself) practise that, but I have not read about that before. In this point it seems that the book breaks an unspoken taboo.
Almost in every coaching book there are patterns of coach - coachee dialogues. I do not like those which "prove" effectiveness of the specific approach/concept in these model dialogues, e.g. how the coachee became more self-confident as a result of "answers to right questions". I do not believe this a-ha moment can change behavior. I appreciate that the coaching dialogues in this book are not of this kind.
An excellent part of the book is Chapter 9 Applying FACTS. Here, the authors show how to apply the FACTS approach not only in coaching but in other areas of business leadership and support it by vivid dialogues.
There are few things I am not happy with. For example using quotations from Lao Tzu's Tao Te Ching is little bit tricky. If you looked at ten different English translations you would see ten different texts. From fuzzy and multiple meaning ones to clear and concrete ones as it were written by a guru in corporate OD consulting. The translation used in the book seems to be adjusted to modern Western thinking on management and leadership. I would personally preferred quotations from the Bible. Not only because of Western tradition, but because in each European language its content has the same meaning. Even the Ying Yang concept can be found in it.
I strongly recommend this book for coaches as well as leaders. Especially when they have felt the limits of the traditional coaching approach. The more experienced a reader is in coaching, the more he/she will get from it. I believe the book opens new horizons for the business of coaching.

Glenn Hughes The Autobiography: From Deep Purple to Black Country Communion, by Glenn Hughes

Singer, bassist, and songwriter Glenn Hughes is a living, breathing embodiment of British rock, and his is a compelling story. Starting out in the 60s with beat combo Finders Keepers, he formed acclaimed funk-rock band Trapeze, then joined Deep Purple at their commercial peak. Flying around the world in the band's own jet, Hughes enthusiastically embraced the rock 'n' roll lifestyle. He played on three Purple albums, including the classic Burn. When Deep Purple split up in 1976, Hughes embarked on a series of solo albums, collaborations, and even a brief, chaotic spell fronting Black Sabbath. Along the way he battled crack addiction and cocaine psychosis, before surviving a clean-up-or-die crisis and recovering to rebuild his solo career. Hughes recounts his adventures and misadventures with honesty and humour, bringing us up to date with the formation of rock supergroup Black Country Communion. Glenn Hughes is a true original whose music blends hard rock, soul, and funk. Once described by Stevie Wonder as his favourite white singer, he achieved international fame with Deep Purple, and has since collaborated with artists including Tony Iommi, The KLF, and members of The Red Hot Chili Peppers. He formed his new group, Black Country Communion, in 2010.

Glenn is beautiful, but the worst edited memoir in history
By Bo
There is no one who loves Glenn Hughes more then me, so let me be the first to say that Joel Mciver should give back whatever money he made on this project. I read a lot of memoirs and this is the worst job of editing I have ever come across. Things completely out of order, things repeated over and over, it gets better towards the end of the book but he really makes Glenn look bad here.

You'd think the Kindle version was accidentally the rough notes that Glenn delivered to his editor?

However the stories Glenn tells are great and even with the tough read, I loved every minute of it! Glenn Hughes is just a beautiful man who is making the most of his redemption and the greatest rock singer in history.

Wonderful, thrilling tell-all from a stellar musician
By violentfemmebot
I was not able to put this book down after I picked it up. The pace is fast, and the content is pretty much "all killer, no-filler" that takes the reader, whether he/she is a Glenn Hughes fan or not, on one hell of a crazy SEX DRUGS N ROCK AND ROLL ride. This book is the sort you want all of your favorite celebrities to write; it dishes the dirt we want to know and then some.

This brisk quality *does* come at the expense of some details I would have liked to have learned. I would have liked to have learned more about the nitty gritty of Glenn's musical career, and his relationships, both in his career and personal (which are quite glossed over. Literally, all you really learn about any of the women he's been with is that they were "absolutely beautiful!", and all you really learn about Ritchie Blackmore is "he's eccentric!" and Ian Paice is "quiet" and so on). If you want to learn more about Glenn's musical career in Deep Purple, Jerry Bloom's incredible "Black Knight: Ritchie Blackmore" is the book you want, as it contains wonderful, detailed portraits of not only Blackmore, but also of Glenn and the rest of the band and how they interacted as musicians. Hell, I think it even has more information on Tommy Bolin than you'll find here. But I digress, because the book ITSELF states that none of this is the point.

The book states that it's mainly a document of Glenn's terrible addiction, and it does an absolutely stellar job of showing Glenn's decline from a soulful, eager young musician into a ego-driven hellbat of a drug fiend. It is an excellent cautionary tale that reminds readers that the danger of drugs is not so much that they'll physically kill you, but that they'll rob you of your very soul, spirit, health and essence. Reading through, you will discover it is a miracle that Glenn climbed out of the deep abyss that he dug for himself and made an excellent new career for himself with Black Country Communion.

Yes, there were small flaws - some of the organization of the material looked a little rushed and it could be confusing as to whether we were in, say, 1977 or 1980, the way the anecdotes skipped about - but as a book that you will enjoy reading, that will take you on a wild, star-studded ride (Glenn mingles with so many huge stars, including Ozzy Osbourne and David Bowie) and make you gasp and laugh and cry, this is an incredible, successful book. I recommend it not only to Glenn and Deep Purple fans, but to any fan of the '70s rockstar lifestyle or juicy tell-alls, or to anyone who has suffered through addiction.

Confusing and poorly written
By Caetano Scatena
I'm an avid reader of rock'n'roll biographies and have purchased quite a few in the last years, so I'd like to give my contribution on this issue.

Don't expect that gifted musicians can turn into great writers, and vice-versa. Eric Clapton is a good example, whose autobiography I consider just a barely-above-average easy-reading book, but still a quite pleasant book, if you know what to expect from it.

Still, I was lucky enough to read some really good books, like Sting's "Broken Music" and the excellent Andy Summers' "One Train Later", and these encouraged me to move forward on this subject, giving me more "critical mass" upon it.

I was disappointed to see how superficial GH's book was in every aspect: he barely describes his childhood/personal background, simply skips about any musical technics and skills (I'd like to ask him "Hey Glenn, how did you play that Purple song?", like many other fans, I suppose) and soon the book falls into a nonsense sequence of cocaine binges (with their effects) and odd stories from the road, which even being an interesting subject, are not described as I think they should be.

One particular thing that I did not like was the testimonials inserted in the middle of the chapters. Here, relatives, parents, friends, ex-partners and former colleagues have their say about the "greatness" of Glenn, which is quite unnecessary, when you consider the so gifted musician/singer he is. Even worse, when you realize that it breaks the text flow and confuse some stories even more.

This format and the general writing of the book disappointed me to the point that I found hard to read it till the end, which is a pity when you remember that this musician has lived one of the most thrilling and exciting careers of the showbiz.

All in all, I just have the impression that this book is part of some therapy for Glenn, as if he needed to put his devils out for once and good. I'm glad to know that at 60, he's still able to play and sing so well with a top-grade band like BCC, and in this sense I only wish him the best.

Let's hope that, in the future and with time and more focus, he can review what's written here and provide us with something more up to his musical achievements.
