Plants and Empire: Colonial Bioprospecting in the Atlantic World, by Londa Schiebinger

Plants seldom figure in the grand narratives of war, peace, or even everyday life yet they are often at the center of high intrigue. In the eighteenth century, epic scientific voyages were sponsored by European imperial powers to explore the natural riches of the New World, and uncover the botanical secrets of its people. Bioprospectors brought back medicines, luxuries, and staples for their king and country. Risking their lives to discover exotic plants, these daredevil explorers joined with their sponsors to create a global culture of botany.

But some secrets were unearthed only to be lost again. In this moving account of the abuses of indigenous Caribbean people and African slaves, Schiebinger describes how slave women brewed the "peacock flower" into an abortifacient, to ensure that they would bear no children into oppression. Yet, impeded by trade winds of prevailing opinion, knowledge of West Indian abortifacients never flowed into Europe. A rich history of discovery and loss, Plants and Empire explores the movement, triumph, and extinction of knowledge in the course of encounters between Europeans and the Caribbean populations.

Review
Plants and Empire shows how botany and slavery, cruelty and courage, curiosity and capitalism all converged on one beautiful "peacock flower"--the ornament of European gardens, a sought-after medicament, and an abortifacient for slave women who refused to bear children into inhuman bondage. This book is rich in information and insights about how plants have transformed our world; it is above all rich in stories about the people who hunted and used them, splendidly told. (Lorraine Daston, Max Planck Institute for the History of Science)

A rich, innovative analysis--laced with poignant vignettes of the lives of travelers, lovers, colonists, and slaves--of how gender structured the science of botany in the age of mercantilist empires. This book sheds light on how the knowledge of plants of Caribbean Amerindians and slaves moved into Northern European gardens and salons and back again into colonial plantations worldwide. Most importantly, it illuminates how this very knowledge was actively suppressed when it proved threatening to the gendered foundations of power at the European core. (Jorge Cañizares-Esguerra, SUNY-Buffalo)

Schiebinger brings humble plants--peacock flowers and sassafras trees--into the dark and poignant heart of eighteenth century colonial encounters and into the modern history of cultural exchange. Desperate to extract some botanical knowledge from native peoples, Europeans were equally anxious to suppress other medicines--most notably, the abortifacients with which slaves sought to cheat their master of property and through which European women might also seek to rob the mercantalist state of population. Bio-prospecting was a deeply troubled enterprise. This is a morally serious book for anyone interested in the globalization of 'intellectual property.' (Thomas Laqueur, University of California, Berkeley)

Londa Schiebinger's scholarly study covers botanical exploration during what the author calls 'the long eighteenth century': from the 1670s until about 1802. This was a period of dawning European recognition that the real treasures of the New World lay not in fabled cities of gold but in the vines, bushes, and flowers that crowded village gardens and grew in the jungles beyond...Schiebinger's thoughtful study, then, sheds light not only on how new knowledge comes to be, but also on how some new knowledge comes to be ignored. (Natural History 2005-04-01)

Londa Schiebinger's ambitious, eminently readable new book focuses on "the long eighteenth century" when botany reigned as queen of the colonial sciences…Hopefully, Schiebinger's intellectual voyage beyond Europe's borders will lead many others to recognize the fundamental importance of knowledge formation--and non-formation--on the colonial "periphery" of the Atlantic World. (Gregory T. Cushman Journal of the History of Medicine)

This is a curious book. The heart of it tries to explain why something did not happen...[Schiebinger's] focus is, as she puts it, 'the nontransfer of important bodies of knowledge from the New World into Europe.' It is, then, a study in 'agnotology,' that is, of 'culturally induced ignorances.' The study of things that did not happen and of ignorances does not sound promising, but Schiebinger has written an entertaining book that raises some interesting questions, and for people passionate about the history of fertility control, no doubt, an important book. (J.R. McNeill H-Net)

[A] fascinating study...Schiebinger has read widely in the natural-historical and medical literature of the period, and she writes engagingly, bringing to life many of the chief protoganists. This book ought to be essential reading for anyone interested in the relationship between science and empire. (Mark Harrison American Historical Review 2005-06-01)

Plants and Empire presents a subtle and compelling explanation for why knowledge of West Indian abortifacients was not taken up by scientists in Europe. More broadly, Schiebinger illustrates the explanatory power of agnotology. Her study of scientific ignorance demonstrates that understanding what scientists do not know is just as important as understanding what they do know. (Stuart McCook Science 2005-01-01)

Adds much to Atlantic history
By Jeffrey Leach
Atlantic history is turning into quite the hot topic these days in various academic circles. When I use the phrase "Atlantic history," I'm not referring to mere narratives dealing with navies or trading vessels, but rather the sweeping arc of political, economic, cultural, and social dynamics of the nations and continents bordering the Atlantic Ocean. It is a topic that also deals with slavery, piracy, colonialism, revolution, and the rise of capitalism. Histories in this field tend to look at events spanning three or four centuries, usually the 1600s to the 1900s but often greater swaths of time, and how these events arose from the complex interactions of various peoples. I've read quite a few books in this challenging field, from Marcus Rediker's "The Many-Headed Hydra" to Barry Unsworth's fictional novel "Sacred Hunger" to a series of essays from Philip D. Curtin. All three were enlightening in particular ways, but all three couldn't possibly hope to cover every aspect of such an enormous topic. Well, Rediker comes close. But plenty of work still exists for the keen-eyed historian. Enter Londa Schiebinger and her "Plants and Empire: Colonial Bioprospecting in the Atlantic World." Plants, it seems, moved about as much as people during this time frame.

Who collected plants in the New World and took them back to Europe? Were there specific plants sought by European scientists and, if so, which ones and why? These are only a couple of the many questions the author seeks to answer in this book. According to Schiebinger, to find the answers to these vexing questions involves studying the state of botanical study in the 17th and 18th centuries, the role women played in collecting plants and using the medicine distilled from them, the personalities behind the cataloguing of plants, and the various methods used to disseminate knowledge about the medicinal uses of the plants in question. The book explains that the European nation states considered plants a valuable commodity, so much so that kings and princes underwrote the creation of special botanical gardens employing scientists and dozens of men willing to go out into the field to collect specimens. Plants could provide cures for various afflictions or dyes for clothing that could translate into millions in profit for a particular nation. Moreover, the acquisition of material meant fame and fortune for the botanists involved in their collection. Carl Linnaeus, the father of modern scientific classification, pops up in these pages more than once. So do a few women who went out into the field--primarily a man's domain--to write their own treatises on native flora and fauna.

Schiebinger mentions many useful plants, but focuses on one in particular to show how empire building and imperialism manifested itself in such an innocuous activity as botany. The Peacock flower, which grew widely in the Caribbean and was used by local women as a way to end unwanted pregnancies, caught the eye of European collectors quite early. These men even knew what the plant's function was. So were does empire enter the picture? First, Schiebinger argues that doctors and botanists attempted to hide the true use of the plant back home--a process of purposefully obscuring scientific data the author calls agnotology--so that European women would not use the plant to terminate pregnancies. At the same time, doctors and researchers never hesitated to use this plant and other abortifacients in experiments on slaves in the New World. Thus knowledge, or the control of knowledge by male scientists, was used to regulate female reproduction and assert a form of dominance over the native populations in the Caribbean. Moreover, Schiebinger asserts that slaves and conquered populations used the Peacock flower because they didn't want their children to live in bondage. Pretty heavy stuff, wouldn't you say?

The research in the book is impeccable. The author consulted medical books, botanical collections, memoirs, pharmaceutical pamphlets and catalogues, letters, and other pertinent materials to construct a detailed examination of the importance of botany in European expansion and conquest. "Plants and Empire" is at its strongest when arguing that herbal medicines were enormously important to European economic trade, more important than we would think. The book is at its weakest when trying to convince the reader that scientists tried to hide the knowledge of abortifacients from European females. Yes, it does appear that the particular trait of the Peacock flower didn't pop up all over the place, but it did appear in a few journals and reports. Besides, the Europeans had access to a large number of effective abortifacients that worked just as well, if not better, than the Peacock flower. Some of these medicines were still available well into the 20th century. Moreover, the argument that the disappearance of midwives, with their vast knowledge of such "immoral" materials, would result in a loss of this knowledge amongst the general populace seems unlikely. Knowledge, especially "forbidden" knowledge, is surprisingly resistant to any attempts at restriction.

I enjoyed reading Schiebinger's book despite these problems. She's quite a proficient writer, capable of guiding the reader through the often daunting numbers of Latin plant names with the greatest of ease. Too--and I probably shouldn't say this about an academic whose specialty includes gender studies--she's quite attractive if the photograph on the flap is any indication. I could easily see myself sitting in the front row of her class with endearing messages written on my eyelids. Seriously, students of Atlantic history and others who love metahistory would do well to check out this book. It is a fine contribution to the field.

Not sure why this book turns into a kind of gender study,
By John Q. Public
Study on western imperialism and its roots (pun intended) in botanical exploration and cultivation turns into study on 17th-19th century feminism. Seriously, great book and good data but why does this gem on history have to turn into a gender study? You people seem to enjoy the previous assessment of this book but not only does the reviewer say the same thing in extremely long format but he goes on to call the author attractive and muses about being her lustful student. This book is unnecessarily tainted by feminist theory. It tries desperately to give voice to svc glorify women's roles in imperialism and exploration and paint European women as victims. The only victims here are the slaves from Africa and the natives of the Americas who were raped, enslaved, and ethnically cleansed to make way for the white man AND WOMAN. This book proves white women were at least complicit in genocide.

Does just what it says!
By Amazon Customer
I have always been interested in beauty and the arts, so calligraphy has always been fascinating to me. And when I decided it was time to do something about my messy handwriting, this book was a tremendous help.

I first bought this book several years ago, but have since lost, misplaced it or given it away. As my handwriting has deteriorated from computer use and lack of practice, I felt it was time to get back to calligraphy. Imagine my frustration when I couldn't find the book! Now that I have it again, my handwriting continues to improve.

This book is very effective and does just what it says. It has clear, effective, and easy-to-follow instructions and excellent practice sheet templates. I've found that tracing the letters is the best way to learn how they should be formed, and this book makes it easy. The practice sheets are normal (8.5x11) size, so you don't have to mess with resizing on a computer or copier.

The results are pleasing and beautiful. And my everyday handwriting is more legible and pleasant to read, without looking like it was written by a high school cheerleader or an obsessive-compulsive neatnik (No offense to high school cheerleaders or obsessive-compulsive neatniks, it's just that that's not the way a middle-aged man is expected to write!)

The only negatives about this book are: (1)that it seems too short (it would be nice to have more information), and (2) that it teaches only one style of calligraphy. But, once you've learned everything in this book, you'll have a good basis for learning more calligraphy.

I sincerely wish that it was back in print, so that I could safely recommend it to anyone hoping to improve their handwriting or learn calligraphy. But, if you happen to find it, BUY IT QUICKLY! You won't regret it. (And if you do, let me know, I might take it off your hands!)

A good way to begin calligraphy or improve handwriting.
By Amazon Customer
If you just want to improve your handwriting or if you want to learn the fine art of calligraphy, this book is a good start. The author takes you step-by-step through 12 projects or lessons that start with the very simple and easy and then go on to the more difficult. The important thing is to follow the directions precisely and practice often. The book also includes many inspiring examples from real people (from age seven to senior citizen) who improved their handwriting through italic study. In the process of learning to write beautiful italics, this book allows you to develop your own, unique style of handwriting. In this day of mechanized communication beautiful, skillful handwriting can be very impressive!

Best on the market for teaching yourself Italic!
By jamesivy@flash.net
I bought Mr. Eager's book in 1975 and to this day believe this is the very best book on the market for teaching yourself the Italic writing style. The "trace and copy" method is excellent for teaching the hand to make the proper letter forms. Mr. Eager also goes into detail on the theory of the Italic hand, and why the letter shapes look the way they do. I love Calligraphy, especially the beautiful Italic hand. Heartfelt thanks to Mr. Eager for his fine book.

An Excitng, Entertaining Thriller -- But You Must Be Willing To Oftentimes Suspend Disbelief!
By bobbewig
Memory Man is the first book (of two so far) in Baldacci's newest series featuring a rather unique character named Amos Decker. As a 22 year old playing his first NFL game, Decker, on his very first play, suffers a traumatic head injury that not only ended his football career, it induced hyperthymesia and synesthesia -- resulting in his never forgetting anything and his counting in colors and seeing time as pictures in his head.

I won't provide a plot description as this can be gotten from the Amazon Book Description above. Rather, I'll provide some of my feelings about Memory Man which, hopefully, will be of help in deciding if it is a book you'll want to read.

Overall, there several key positive aspects that far outweigh what I consider to be its one, but not insignificant, key flaw.

On the positive side, Baldacci writes in a brisk narrative style and composes dialogue that is realistic for the characters speaking it. The plot is multi-faceted, interesting, fast-paced and has an above-average amount of twists and turns. And, perhaps, most importantly, Baldacci's main character and more secondary "good guy" characters are pretty well-developed and likeable enough to make me interested in going along with them on their next case. Further, you're not likely to forget a villain in this book anytime soon.

For me, these aspects override a number of the actions of Amos Decker and some of the motivations of a villain that I consider to be far-fetched enough to almost push me to the very edge of my ability to suspend belief. This flaw resulted in my deducting one star from my overall rating.

If you can accept a plot that while fun and interesting has some credibility issues, than I think Memory Man is a book worthy of your consideration. I, for one, found Memory Man to have enough merit to make me interested enough to read the second book in the Amos Decker series, called The Last Mile.

Too silly
By TChris
Amos Decker comes home to find that his mother, wife, and child have been murdered. Decker is a cop and the beginning of his story is too familiar to be promising. He also sees numbers and colors in ways that have become too familiar among fictional characters who suffer from brain abnormalities. As if that's not enough, Decker has the memory (and empathy) of a supercomputer.

When writers decide to use a prop to make a character interesting, they usually pick one. Baldacci's decision to use four (numbers, colors, memory, and loss of family to a killer) gives Amos an overdone quality that permeates the novel. Yes, it's fun to give a character some quirky traits, but Decker is quirkiness on steroids. The numbers and colors and DVD-like memory all come across as gimmicks, not as humanizing traits. Primarily because I disliked the gimmicks upon which the central character is founded, I don't regard Memory Man as one of David Baldacci's better efforts. All of the autistic-savant stuff is just too trite. And really, the fact that he's chased by menacing 3s is just silly.

The bad guys in Memory Man might as well be supervillains -- the unpowered kind, like Lex Luthor or the Joker -- given their astonishing ability to foresee Decker's every act and to greet his appearances by leaving threatening scrawls on walls for him to read. Other things I didn't believe: Why is the top cop inviting a reporter to tag along with Decker on a police investigation? Why does the FBI agree to let her fly on its government jet? Why, when time is of the essence, do Decker and the reporter drive from Burlington to Chicago when they could fly there in a couple of hours? I'll go pretty far to suspend disbelief when I read a thriller, but I just couldn't buy much of anything in this one.

The plot of Memory Man is almost as silly as the Memory Man character. Fifteen months after the killings, Decker is a private investigator. The person who killed his family remains at large. After a school shooting, the Burlington Police improbably hire Decker as a consultant (the entire police force plus the FBI not being enough), giving Baldacci a chance to prove that Memory Man is a supercop, sort of a linebacker version of Sherlock Holmes, or at least he would be if he were still a cop. Naturally, although I won't discuss how, the mystery of the school shooting (who did it, why, and how did the shooter escape undetected) quickly ties in to the murders of Decker's wife and children.

I enjoyed following Decker as he investigated the school shooting. Baldacci is a seasoned writer who knows how to move a story at a good pace. Dialog is authentic and the quality of Baldacci's prose is never a problem. It is always easy to read Baldacci to the end, but this is the first Baldacci novel I've read that I would not recommend, even with reservations. The killer's motivation (as least with regard to Decker and particularly Decker's family) struck me as preposterous. The last chapters are predictable. Since I didn't buy either the plot or the reality of the central characters, all that remains is snappy prose, and that doesn't overcome the silliness.

Terrific
By J. Prins
This is a very entertaining story. It is not a full five stars, but close enough. The story is an involves an unusual, but very believable protagonist. A man, Amos Decker, with hyperthymesia (can remember everything) and synesthesia (sees things and events as numbers and colors) suffers a horrific tragedy, a crime that is not solved. His world crashes and his life goes sharply downhill. Over a year later, a strange man walks into the police station and confesses out of the blue. This is the beginning of a cascade of murders with Decker at the center of everything. The question is why. Can Decker's amazing memory both help find all the clues to seemingly perfect, yet inexplicable, crimes and remember what happened in his past that seemingly triggered everything?

The story is a little unusual for Baldacci, because there are no military or political themes in the novel, although Decker is a former cop. Nevertheless, the story itself is compelling; I would find that more time had past while reading than I thought, I was that wrapped up in the book. Despite my best intentions, I lost sleep. The characters are well-crafted and believable as is the plot. There are a number of twists and puzzles throughout and the resolution is unexpected, but satisfying.

I have only two fairly minor complaints. While the book starts with a bang, the story abruptly slows way down for the next few chapters. We are provided Decker's background, which is the crux of the whole story, in choppy, dragged out bits. This doesn't last for too long, but it was long enough that I worried that the whole book would be comprised of random chapters that hopped around dropping facts in a disjointed manner. However, even though there are necessarily times when Decker must look into the past, after the choppy start, the story is thankfully presented in a reasonably linear fashion.

My second complaint is that the story periodically slows down, frequently so Decker can go eat, in order for Decker to contemplate his life. It does provide a fuller insight into his character while emphasizing his metamorphosis into an antisocial person, but it became a tad tiresome.

Regardless, these negative bits did not ruin my overall delight in the novel. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys police procedurals, crime fiction, or just a really good story.

The Brand Bubble: The Looming Crisis in Brand Value and How to Avoid It, by John Gerzema, Edward Lebar

How to use brands to gain and sustain competitive advantage

Companies today face a dilemma in marketing. The tried-and-true formulas to create sales and market share behind brands are becoming irrelevant and losing traction with consumers. In this book, Gerzema and LeBar offer credible evidence--drawn from a detailed analysis of a decade's worth of brand and financial data using Y&R's Brand Asset Valuator (BAV), the largest database of brands in the world--that business is riding on yet another bubble that is ready to burst--a brand bubble. While most managers still see metrics like trust and awareness as the backbone of how brands are built, Gerzema asserts they're dead wrong--these metrics do not add to increased asset value. In fact, by following them, they actually hasten the declining value of their brands.

Using a five-stage model, The Brand Bubble reveals how today's successful brands--and tomorrow's--have an insatiable appetite for creativity and change. These brands offer consumers a palpable sense of movement and direction thanks to a powerful "energized differentiation." Gerzema reveals how brands with energized differentiation achieve better financial performance than traditional brands have. Plus, Gerzema helps readers develop energized differentiation in their own brands, creating consumer-centric and sustainable organizations.

From School Library Journal
These authors both hold senior positions at Young & Rubicam (Y&R), part of the largest ad agency holding company in the world, WPP Group. Their book sounds an alarm based on a gap in value between how consumers and investors perceive brands. The authors have a proprietary research tool that they use to measure value, and they've found that investors reward companies with greater brand awareness, even if consumers don't see much utility. The book presents recommendations on how to close the gap between consumer and company perceptions. Many other books present theories about branding. Al and Laura Ries's The 22 Immutable Laws of Branding offers a hands-on approach to branding, focusing on what works and not necessarily why, while Janelle Barlow and Paul Stewart's Branded Customer Service attacks the problem of branding from the view of the customer experience. David A. Aaker and Erich Joachimsthaler's Brand Leadership's more quantitative approach and academic perspective can be compared most closely to this new book. The Brand Bubble is appropriate for a business school or corporate library and will be useful to marketers as well as investors.—Stephen E. Turner, Turner Devaughn Network, Abington, PA

"...worth reading" (Financial Times, October 23rd 2008)

"The authors have access to one of the richest longitudinal marketing databases in the world...If consumer and investor perceptions of brand value have indeed been diverging, a huge reassessment of the value of brand-owning companies may still be ahead."—Alan Mitchell, Financial Times (October 23, 2008)

"The book is a wake-up call for marketers who think more branding per se will save them."—John T. Landry, Harvard Business Review(November 2008)

"Through extensive consumer research and analysis, the authors propose a startling fact: that despite rising valuations, consumers are falling out of love with many of the brands they buy. Use this book to learn how to safeguard one of your most cherished assets, your brand."—Ram Charan, co-author of The Game Changer, Execution, and Confronting Reality

Agree with Viriya
By Matthew R. Coakley
I was pretty disappointed by this book. After all the hype, who would have thought that there was a review bubble! So, the first chapter or so is pretty decent. The case for a 'brand bubble' is presented effectively. After that, the book seemed to lose traction. The authors gave interesting examples, but the principles behind these examples seemed ambiguous as best. Most of the text consisted of platitudes and fluff. Also, it read like an extended advertisement for Young & Rubicam. Finally, the whole idea of 'energy' was unconvincing. If you're interested in brand management, you might want to check this book out of your local library. Otherwise, I'd skip it.

It can be better

(First of all, I do not want to give 3 stars for the sake of it but I try to be honest and hope you read my review with an open mind, thank you)

"There's another bubble hiding in our economy"

"The Brand Bubble" by John Gerzema and Ed Lebar is to remind and warn everyone that the current economy crisis might not be the last one in present days. Brands, around the world, have been inflated perceptually and financially. With the new era of technology, customers are surrounded with blogs, news, reviews, discussions, recommendations, and they are within an arm reach; this is the so-called ConsumerLand by the authors. Big brands are not invincible anymore. Brands that survive, thrive, and flourish need "energy". This book tells you the meaning and importance of "energy" and how can you foster it.

Contents

Part 1: Introduction

Chapter 1: Tulipmania and Inflated Brands
The first chapter tells you the current state of brands and how they were inflated mainly by the hands of Wall Street. Brands are less trusted, less liked, less salient, and more often perceived as low quality but the value of the brands, or the intangible assets of the company measured by the stock market, is still on the way up.

Chapter 2: Can You Say "Irresistable"?
The authors state that the new dimension that drives the brand is "energy", and the new four pillars of brand are Energized Differentiation, Relevance, Esteem, and Knowledge. There is an interesting grid of BrandAsset Valuator© or BAV which has Y-axis as Brand Strength and X-axis as Brand Stature. You can take a look at TheBrandBubble.com.

Chapter 3: Wall Street, Meet Main Street
The point of the chapter is that consumers are more sophisticated and act more like investors that they seek future benefits, want to maximise returns, accumulate information and knowledge, watch for movement, and demand transparency and accountability.

Chapter 4: The Postmodern Craving for Creativity
Creativity is a must, full stop.

Chapter 5: Welcome to ConsumerLand
The Internet and more specifically social media changes the way consumers behave

Part 2: Application
In this part, each chapter is the stage of brand development. In each chapter, the authors will explain the contents and end the chapters with 1.) Obstacle to beat back 2.) The law of energy, 3.) The new rule of brand management and 4.) Case study. I will write brief explanations without going into too much detail.

Chapter 6: Stage One-Exploration: Performing an Energy Audit
The chapter starts with and anatomy of BAV and, into details, "Energized Differentiation". The author stressed the word "Energized" by defining it as Vision, Invention, and Dynamism (VID) and how sample brands are ranked on the sprectrum.

Chapter 7: Stage Two-Distillation: Identifying the Energy Core
Gerzema and Lebar's "Energy Core" is equivalent to Jim Collins' "Core Ideology" with a slight tweak. If you have not read Jim Collins, it is the heart of an organisation, it's how to company is, have been, and will be built.

Chapter 8: Stage Three-Ignition: Creating an Energized Value Chain
"In ignition, the enterprise takes the fuel from its Energy Core and uses it to drive the brand forward." And every function can contribute to the ignition of the brand.

Chapter 9: Stage Four-Fusion: Becoming an Energy-Driven Enterprise
Fusion is when the new practices are becoming the culture of an organisation or "brand as culture". The examples of Energy-driven enterprises are Google, Whole Foods, and Nordstrom.
Chapter 10: Stage Five-Renewal: Active Listening and Constant Refreshing of Brand Meaning

The authors tell you that brands need to evolve and keep changing over the time. "Tactics are strategy, strategy is tactics"

...

In the next part, I'll compare this book to the ideal book, a book that is easy to understand, distinct, practical, credible, insightful, and provides great reading experience.

Ease of Understanding: 5/10: This book is on an abstract subject, branding, and the authors did not make it clearer. The first part, introduction, is explained nicely; and that's where the 5/10 are from. However, the author fails to elaborate the second part, application. The contents (of the second part) are not linked together beautifully. You might wonder why this "Obstacle to beat back", "The law of energy", "The new rule of management", or case study is in this chapter. And what does it really mean? What it has to do with the chapter? Why isn't it there, instead?

Distinction: 6/10: Like I mentioned earlier, the first part is written with interesting data and BAV is fascinating. There are analysis, valuation, speculation and it is a blend of marketing, management, economics, finance, etc (Ed Lebar is the former professor of economics). The second part is pretty much like other mainstream business books. The essence of the Energy Core is already defined numerous times under different names by different authors. However, the case studies are not bland; Lego, Virgin, Xerox, Mumbai Tiffin Box, and Uniqlo.

Practicality: 4/10: I had high hope in the second part, application but it did not turn out to be very practical. There is no solid step, those five stages are mere guidelines and example of successful organisations.

I'll give an example of Stage Three-Ignition, the authors tell us that Energy Core can be from any part of the organisation; Leadership, Finance, R&D, Business Model, Sales, Manufacturing, Operations, Distribution, IT and CRM, and HR. Each of these has different examples which is great. Now, the obstacle to beat back is "Management's focus is primarily on today's profitability" and the author suggested that we must look for the long-term because most of marketing (in typical companies) is just selling. Then, the chapter moves on to The Third Law of Energy: "A brand is not a place, it's a direction"; they state that brands must be verbs and positioning can no longer be static. And the new rule of brand management is "Drive the brand back through the organization"; there came Xerox case study.

The application is more like "that's the way it is".

Credibility: 7/10: The book has lots of solid and sound examples and case studies. They look very sensible and credible. However, the only drawback is BrandAsset Valuator© (BAV) because the book relies significantly on this model. Although we know the concept and basic anatomy of BAV such as VID (Vision, Invention, and Dynamism), we do not know how they are ranked and the math behind it.

Insight: 9/10: I will state again that the book has lots of examples, data, researches. Most issues are explained sufficiently (albiet not always clearly). And the greatest value of this book is cases, examples, and how they are analysed.

Reading Experience: 5/10: In the very first chapters, the book looks extremely promising but the excitement fades away due to the abstractness of the latter chapters. I do not like to compare with other books but at times, you will feel that this book is much like Jim Collins' "Good to Great" and "Built to Last". The good point of this book is that it is newer and sounds more fun (branding vs corporate management) but the drawback is that chapters are not tied together like those two books mentioned.

Overall: 6.0/10: I desperately want to like this book because it has what it takes to be great; great examples and case studies, very insightful researches, and interesting analysis. However, this book fails to synchronise the contents and stories. And it does not offer good-enough practical guidelines to readers. I will be looking forward to the next book by Gerzema and Lebar. I would say buy this book but do not have your expectation too high.

Sometimes Less is More -
By Loyd Eskildson
The authors lay out credible evidence that businesses think brands are worth more than the consumers who buy them. At the same time, the financial markets keep raising brand valuations. The result - a brand bubble that represents $4 trillion in S&P market capitalization alone. According to the authors, the average brand value component of market capitalization is 71% using Young and Rubicon's 'BrandAsset Valuator' that was developed with $113 million to track 40,000 brands in 44 nations.

Explanations for the decline in consumer valuations of brands: 1)Glut of products - 58,375 new products introduced in 2006, over 2X that of just 2002. The average American sees 60% more ad messages/day than when President Clinton took office. Not surprisingly, over 81% of consumers could not name one of the top 50 products launched that year. 2)The glut invariable leads to commoditization of brands. 3)Consumers are more price sensitive - not surprising given the flattening of real incomes and large job losses. 4)Better products - even the lowest-priced goods exceed the average acceptable quality levels for most people. Stated alternatively, regardless of what you buy, you'll be happy with your purchase. 5)Trust in institutions and corporations has declined - this includes advertising as well.

The authors should have quit at this point. The remainder of "The Brand Bubble" is vague, and seems like a long commercial for Y&R services. Reality, however, is that a growing worldwide surplus of goods and declining economic strength for U.S. consumers doesn't leave much future for brand value. This trend is reflected in growing Wal-Mart and declining mall, high-end store sales. Period, end of book.
