Are you like me an admirer of Leonardo da Vinci ? Do you want to know more about the existence and authenticity of two other Mona Lisa? Did you know that his Salvatore Mundi, lost for decades, reappeared in 1900, to be first declared a fake, then hailed as genuine in 2005 ? Were you aware that Van Gogh’s Still Life With Meadow-Flowers And Roses was painted over muscled wrestlers mentioned by the artist in a letter to his brother Theo? Had you realized that Manet’s admiration of Velasquez prompted him to produce an Infanta that fooled everybody for a century? Then, like me, you will be kept breathless reading The Scientist and the Forger …

However Dr. Ragai ’s book is not only an impressively well documented thriller, summarizing the exciting events that in the past century have occurred on the International Art Scene ; it is a scientific book describing the latest and most up to date techniques used in authenticating art works . It also provides the reader with an insight on the psychological set up of viewers and that of forgers and introduces us to the back and front stage of courts of law where decisions affecting the Art History of the world are being decided. The techniques discussed are introduced on a need to know basis and in language that is easily accessible to a non-specialist. Interestingly, this book provides the reader with a glimpse into the psychology of the art forger, the art collector and connoisseur highlighting the impact of art forgery on the art milieu. Rich with its many intriguing examples of forgeries, some of well-known works and involving a wide variety of different styles of painting, this book was a true joy to read.

The new economy's "no collar movement," in which companies embraced openness, cooperation and self-management among employees, captured the interest of Ross, director of New York University's American studies program. Fed up with reports of increasingly dehumanized workplaces in the wake of Jack Welch-style takeovers and downsizing, he investigated whether the new economy's trend to honor and utilize, rather than suppress, employees' human qualities had the potential to transfer to other industries. Studying two Manhattan-based new media companies, Ross found a refreshing excitement among workers at Razorfish, a design shop-cum-media consulting firm, and 360hiphop.com, a multi-ethnic media site. As Ross conducted in-depth interviews and closely observed operations at these companies, he discovered the young enthusiasts loved their work so much they found themselves working 70-hour workweeks and had almost no outside lives. Ross was also around to witness the wreckage caused when the Internet bubble burst and the companies had to switch their emphasis from the artisan/worker ideal to one focusing on the bottom line (with newly arriving hordes of MBAs calling the shots). The neo-sweatshop conditions may have been justified as being freely chosen before the bubble burst, but Ross's insights into the upheavals and heartbreak that followed the inevitable layoffs have much to say about the real-world limits to building more humane workplaces today. His chilling assessment of the price new economy workers paid for na‹ve faith in their bosses' promises can also be viewed more broadly as a direct message to all citizens of Free Agent Nation.

Did the reader from Los Angeles read the book?

It doesn't appear that the reader from Los Angeles read this particular book; it seems he/she simply took this space as an opportunity to rant about Andrew Ross and other vaguely related issues. Ross's book is a nuanced look at the peculiar culture of the new media workplace, just as the golden years began to fade. Considering that Ross was not actually an employee of Razorfish, the main company in his case study, his perspective is surprisingly sensitive. After spending the dot-com golden years in San Francisco and Silicon Valley, I was prepared to scoff at an outsider's interpretation of what the new media workplace was like, and how it felt to be an employee of that workplace. I was further prepared to roll my eyes at his choice of exploring New York's new media world rather than making the trip to the heart of it all, the San Francisco Bay Area. But in the end I was impressed: he explains his reasons for choosing New York, and they make sense. And he hits the nail on the head in terms of what was most odd and most interesting--as well as most consequential--about the feel-good, creative, ambitious new media work environment. The book grows significantly more "readable" after the first few chapters give way to more anecdotal scene-setting and conversations with Razorfish employees.

a band collar?

An entertaining and informative read about a time that will be remembered right along side tulip mania. No Collar differs from many business books because it gives valuable insights through the use of the powerful medium of story telling. The writer spent a good deal of time inside the company he focuses on and gives a compelling first hand account.
The lessons and ideas to be learned from this book are not spelled out like in many management books. The reader must read between the lines and come to his/her own conclusions.
One essential lesson to be learned from this account of a company during the inernet explosion and subsequent implosion is the necessity of corporate values and a vision.(built to last) While there is nothing wrong with striving to construct a workplace utopia, clear goals and direction are essential for any company. These ideas are not mutually exclusive from optimum working conditions and do not have to come at the expense of creativity.

More Than Insightful

Ross is always worth reading, and this book might just be his best so far. If it's not, it's certainly the best hands-on analysis of what the New Economy was like for the grunts in the office, and for those us who do knowledge work. No one else took the time he did (over a year) to go inside companies and talk to employees on the daily grind, week in week out. I'm mostly convinced by his conclusions about the perils of the humane workplace, though there's lot more to this book than that. The best thing is that he puts it all in the larger context of historical patterns of work in corporate America. No one, that I know of, has done that. And it's a great read, too.

This anonymous writer also serves as a bridge between Ksemaraja's and Bhaskara's commentaries, drawing from both. The commentary on each sutra is thus in three layers. Bhaskara's commentary is first, followed by the anonymous commentary, after which Dyczkowski adds his own exposition and compares Bhaskara and Ksemaraja.
Ksemaraja's commentary, the Vimarsini, has been translated by Jaideva Singh and published by SUNY Press under the title Siva Sutra.

Mark S. G. Dyczkowski took his first degree at Banaras Hindu University and then his doctorate at Oxford. He is presently associated with Sampurnananda Sanskrit University in Varanasi. He is the author of The Doctrine of Vibration: An Analysis of the Doctrines and Practices of Kashmir Shaivism; The Canon of the Saivagama and the Kubjika: Tantras of the Western Kaula Tradition; and The Stanzas on Vibration: The Spanda Karika with Four Commentaries.

Great Translation and Commentary

The philosophy of Kashmir Shaivism was born in the 9th century when Lord Shiva revealed the 77 aphorisms which have come to constitute the Shiva Sutras to the sage, Vasugupta in a dream. Sri Vasugupta was then instructed to seek out a specific rock on Mahadev Mountain. When Vasugupta struck the rock, it is said to have turned over, revealing the Shiva Sutras inscribed upon the rock. The rock, called Shankaropala, is still located at the original site, although the aphorisms can no longer be found inscribed there.

The book "Aphorisms of Shiva" by Mark Dyczkowski is a translation of the Shiva Sutras with a commentary from Bhaskara, an early sage of Kashmir Shaivism hailing from the lineage of Sage Vasugupta himself. It also features another anonymous commentary. Many generations removed from Vasugupta, a brilliant Master from this same lineage, named Abhinivagupta, wrote the master work of Kashmir Shaivism, the Tantraloka. In a monumental feat of scholarship and penetrating insight, Abhinavagupta rendered the works of these early proponents of Kashmir Shaivism into a cohesive whole which included all the eminent Tantric traditions of the time and region. Abhinava's foremost disciple, Kshemaraja went on to write a commentary on the Shiva Sutras, following the inclusive style of his Guru, that has been widely translated in our own era. In his "Aphorisms of Shiva", Professor Dyczkowski additionally compares the commentary representative of the early stream of Kashmiri Shaivite teaching to that of the later "Trika" system first expounded by Abhinava and furthered by Kshemaraja.

While it isn't the most easily-understood of philosophical pursuits, it's depth is immeasurable and its rewards are bountiful. Studied diligently, especially in conjunction with a spiritual practice and under the direction of a teacher who can help illumine the experience which the tradition points to, the "Shiva Sutras" can help uncover the most vast of treasures. If this path calls to you, I encourage the study of Professor Dyczkowski's "Aphorisms" in particular.

A True story - My StorySo, my book is out here on Amazon now. The book has materialized over many years, thanks to bandwidth issues and stuff like that :). It was an amazing experience - going back in time (right to the NDA days), remembering how events shaped up, and through to some funny and not-so-funny experiences. Of course, the tone of the book is light-hearted and not preachy at all. Siddhant (my fictional name) starts his journey from the NDA and traverses through the adventurous life, with every day at NDA (and IMA thereafter), molding the pliable mind into that of an ideal Officer. Without getting into specifics, Siddhant navigates through the several twists and turns before and after the accident (right up to IIM A); it would suffice to say that the story has elements of Inspiration, Action, Humor, Tragedy, and (ahem!) About the Author
Rajat Mishra is an Ex-Indian Army Officer (Capt.), trained at the prestigious National Defence Academy (NDA) and Indian Military Academy (IMA). After an unfortunate accident during a Military course, he lost his right arm. Life however, did not come to a standstill. The fighter spirit ingrained into him from NDA days, helped in setting high targets, and he moiled through to success. He went on to complete his 2 year MBA from the esteemed Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIM-A). Rajat has inspired many people over the years with his story, and continues to spread the positive vibes in this second-life. Snippets of his story were covered by the media (NDTV, CNN IBN, TOI, etc.) and have been widely shared through his blog and website.

An Epitome of perseverance, cemented with a never say die attitude , this guy as I know is always a treat to be with. I am honoured to be knowing Rajat - A brother in arm, a man who has walked against the tides and achieved what others call the zenith. Yet filled with munificence, readiness to help and keep you light hearted is his strength. Now when a man of his persona puts ink on paper, one better read it and grasp every word of it since its a soup (or a milkshake) for the soul and I do feel that with 'Chocolate Milkshake' my friend Rajat has just done that very well - A soup or a shake packed with energy overloaded with inspiration decorated in simple but great comprehensive language. Wittily Inspirational!!

If I had to describe the book in a few words it would definitely be 'wittily inspirational'! The book has the talent to take you through the arduous journey of Sidhant's life with a touch of humour at all times. This makes it a smooth page turner and a must read for 'all n all'. With that said I hope the author pens down more such works and gives us the pleasure to enjoy his talents!!

If anything, the author is extremely conservative and modest in his depiction of his courage and his achievements. A seemingly 'ordinary day in the life' account by an exceptionally extraordinary human being, colleague and friend. Has helped get a jumpstart in understanding and start implementing pharmaceutical services at the hospital that i work in

This book has been able to help me understand some of the skills that a pharmacists must posses, things that, considering that i myself don't reside in the US, don't teach me at my faculty. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in clinical pharmacy (although this book also cover community pharmacy) in specific and to those students who are studying pharmacy in a country where pharmacy isn't exactly developed so they can get an idea what kind of activities a pharmacist do in a hospital setting

Somewhat dated but still has a lot of good information

This book was written in 1993 and does not have new technology, such as information on gliders made out of foam (Multiplex Easy Star, for example). The battery chapter does not include NiMh batteries, but does have a discuss NiCad batteries in great detail.

However, there is still a lot of basic information that is quite useful. What I found helpful was the author's explanation of basic aerodynamics, sailplane launching (the new "discus" method is not included, though), and thermal flying. I haven't tried slope soaring yet, but there is a whole chapter devoted to that.

Being a enthousiastic RC-glider pilot, I have read this book to find it a bit superficial. For instance, it pays no attention to RC Glider contest flying (like F3B), it only mentions USA-build Gliders that already seem to be on the market for ages.

This book is jam packed with useful information on clinical techniques, approaches, and tools, backed by data on neurological development and concurrent speech emergence.

The author provides a comprehensive resource manual that includes everything you need to know when working with clients with speech disorders. The chapter framework is excellent. It includes learning objectives, key terms and resources at the end of the chapter. Each chapter is thorough and easy to read. It reads as though one is reading a novel, rather than a textbook.

About the Author
Ken Bleile is a professor in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders, University of Northern Iowa, and has served as a visiting scholar in universities in Turkey, Singapore, Russia, and New Zealand. During summers Dr. Bleile often leads study abroad groups to provide speech and language services to children in orphanages and schools in developing countries, most recently in Nicaragua. Dr. Bleile is a recipient of the State of Iowa's Regent's Scholar Award, is a Fellow of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, and a recipient of the Multicultural Board's Diversity Champion Award. He serves as an Associate Editor of the American Journal of Speech-Language Pathology and is the former Chair of ASHA's International Issues Board. Dr. Bleile publishes widely on speech development, international issues, and communication disorders in children with medical needs and developmental disabilities. Recent publications include The Neurological Foundations of Language, The International Directory of Communicative Disorders, and The Late Eight.
