The Chieftain was a radical evolutionary development of the successful Centurion line of tanks that had emerged at the end of the Second World War. The British had learned during the war that their tanks often lacked sufficient protection and firepower compared to those fielded by the enemy, and that this had led to high casualty levels when faced with the superior German tanks in World War II. Chieftain was designed to be as well protected as possible and to be equipped with a powerful 120 mm rifled gun. The heavy armour came at the price of reduced mobility, chiefly due to engine power limitations, which was perhaps the Chieftain's main drawback.

Chieftain in Colors!

Tankers are a greedy lot. They want more. More pictures, bigger pictures, more cut-aways to see their old rides. It's true here too, but author Robert Griffin has provided his readers with a very nice balance of historical narrative, photos and color! Yes, I say color photos of the inside of the tank!
Griffin, a former Tanker on the Conqueror and Chieftain tank writes with humor, knowledge and truth. The good, bad and not so good about the Chieftain. Most of it was very good. Until the M-1 and Leo 2 came along, no Allied tank could match its firepower or protection. Mobility got better through the years, but the Chieftain was a key factor in the defense against the Commie hoards crossing the line. See also Grffin's definitive book Chieftain
The book is excellent. It's not the high glossy paper you see with Squadron Signal books, but it works. And yes, some of the photos are small, but capable of illustration the changes made during modifications, life aboard a Chieftain and how cramped it was inside. You don't so much as get into a Chieftain, but rather put it on. This book is much, much better than New Vanguard/Osprey New Vanguard 80: Chieftain Main Battle Tank 1965-2003
Chieftain MBT is an excellent stand alone book, perfect bland for the historians who want to see how it works and the tankers who want one last chance to go down range. Highly recommended out there for armor enthusiasts, lovers of the Chieftain
